Journal Articles

Lautropia mirabilis, a pleomorphic, motile, gram-negative coccus, has been isolated from the oral cavities of 32 of 60 (53.3%) children infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and 3 of 25 (12.0%) HIV-uninfected controls; the association of L. mirabilis isolation with HIV infection is significant (P < 0.001). All children in the study, both HIV-infected children and controls, were born to HIV-infected mothers. The presence of this bacterium was not associated with clinical disease in these children. The HIV-infected children with L. mirabilis did not differ from the HIV-infected children without L. mirabilis in immunological status, clinical status, or systemic medications. The role of HIV infection itself or concomitant factors in the establishment of L. mirabilis in the oral cavity remains to be elucidated.

Letter To Kazakh Ambassador To The Us, Armin Weinberg

Works on Radiation Effects: 1990-2020

A letter to Bolat K. Nurgaliyev the Kazakhstan Ambassador to the US regarding an upcoming meeting we helped orchestrate that included AFRRI. Also an interesting reference to Mr. James Giffin regarding the committee for reorganization of the health care system in the Republic of Kazakhstan that I was asked to comment on. Turns out Giffin was later arrested and charged related to bribes in a scandal known as Kazahkgate. See more at Armin Weinberg, PhD Papers and its finding aid.

Family Reunion Services: An Examination Of A Process Used To Successfully Reunite Families, Lois Pierce, Vince Geremia

Journal of Family Strengths

Family Reunion Services, an intensive-home-based service for families whose children are unlikely to return home without additional services, was evaluated. The 196 children who received FRS services and remained home had fewer previous placements, were more likely to be black and to come from families where the FRS worker intervened in the areas of parenting skills or communication. FRS workers' activities are described.

Chipping Away At The Monolith: Dispelling The Myth Of Father Noninvolvement In Children's Early Literacy Development, Robert Ortiz

Journal of Family Strengths

Current research stresses the importance of parent involvement in their children 's academic development. Parents reading and writing with their young children is shown to prepare them for the benefits of for ma I education.
