Contributors To The American Sociological Review, 2010, Amadu Jacky Kaba
Amadu Jacky Kaba
This study examines the profile of the contributors of full-length articles to the American Sociolog- ical Review (ASR) in 2010. Examining over a dozen variables, the study compared the findings with both the 2010 regular issues of the American Economic Review (AER) and the American Political Science Review (APSR). Although substantial gender and racial inequalities are observed in all three journals and the disciplines that own those journals, the ASR tends to have more gender and racial representations. Some explanations are provided for this finding. For example, in 2010 women accounted for 29 (36.3%) of the 80 contributors of all …
Explaining The Rapid Increase In Nigeria’S Sex Ratio At Birth: Factors And Implications, Amadu Jacky Kaba
Explaining The Rapid Increase In Nigeria’S Sex Ratio At Birth: Factors And Implications, Amadu Jacky Kaba
Amadu Jacky Kaba
This paper examines the rapid increase in Nigeria’s sex ratio at birth from 1.03 boys born for every 1 girl born in each year from 1996-2008 to 1.06 in each year from 2009-2014, second only to Tunisia in Africa at 1.07. The average sex ratio at birth in the world in 2014 was 1.07. In most Black African nations or Black majority nations, it is 1.03 or less. Among the factors presented for this development are: historical fluctuations of sex ratio at birth; geography and ethnicity; male preference/chasing a son; Age of parents; high death rates of male infants and …

Use, Experience And Future Of E-Books From University Libraries, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles
Lisa M Rose-Wiles
Like most academic libraries, Seton Hall University Libraries have been increasingly investing in eBooks. This is partly a response to budget and space constraints, but also reflects an expectation that eBooks will follow the pattern of electronic journals and gain in popularity. In this research project I examine the use of our eBook collections and report on opinions of eBooks gathered from informal interviews with students and faculty members.

Ecology, Information Literacy And Bernard Lonergan: A Librarian Immersed, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles
Ecology, Information Literacy And Bernard Lonergan: A Librarian Immersed, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles
Lisa M Rose-Wiles
In spring 2013 a group of faculty and administrators completed a series of workshops exploring Bernard Lonergan's General Empirical Method (GEM) and ways to apply it to our teaching. GEM invites students to learn how to think for themselves and discover themselves as learners. There are three initial steps - experiencing, understanding, and judging - which can readily be applied to searching, discovering and evaluating information resources. I report on my collaboration with a Biology professor teaching "Ecology and Stewardship," where we jointly incorporated elements of GEM, information literacy and the research process and developed rubrics for assessing student work.

The Paradoxes Of Africa's Development: African Union's Contributions To Africa's Recent Achievements, 2005-2014, Amadu Jacky Kaba
Amadu Jacky Kaba
This paper focuses on Africa's paradoxes pertaining to meeting its development goals. The paper claims that while one can present a number of examples showing serious challenges confronting countries on the continent in meeting their development goals, one can also present many examples of these same countries making important development achievements, especially in the past decade. For example, the paper shows that the average life expectancy in Africa in 2006 was 53.3 years; in 2014, it increased to 61 years. The average infant mortality rate in Africa in 2006 was 73.5 deaths per 1000; in 2014, it declined to 53 …
The Changing Role Of Digital Tools And Academic Libraries In Scholarly Workflows: A Review, Sharon Favaro, Christopher Hoadley
The Changing Role Of Digital Tools And Academic Libraries In Scholarly Workflows: A Review, Sharon Favaro, Christopher Hoadley
Sharon Favaro Ince, M.L.I.S, M.A.
In this paper, we review the literature on how information literacies are manifested in scholarly workflows for undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars, and the need to support integrating library resources into their knowledge practices, and how available tools support their needs. We argue that research is needed on how libraries and digital tools both support, and indeed teach, knowledge-building practices across the entire lifecycle of knowledge. Finally, we advocate for studying researcher and student workflows as a way to both improve the tools we make available, and more importantly, to inform us on the role(s) libraries can play in the …
