The Economics Of Services In Changing Environment, Arja-Riita Haarala Jun 2004

The Economics Of Services In Changing Environment, Arja-Riita Haarala

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This presentation concentrates on the management issues associated with providing library and information services in a changing environment. The transition from print to digital media has been a success story in many countries. At the same time, libraries are under increasing pressure to justify their expenditure. An answer to the crucial question is needed: Does this expenditure in terms of costs and benefits justify the services delivered? Publishers have encouraged the new trend by offering resources in digital format at little or no additional cost to the print subscription, but how will it be the future. New pricing models are …

Quality Management/Change Management: Two Sides Of The Same Coin?, Felicity Mcgregor Jun 2004

Quality Management/Change Management: Two Sides Of The Same Coin?, Felicity Mcgregor

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Change management strategies, as discussed in the literature, commonly share similar approaches and processes. Quality management or business excellence frameworks include many of the elements seen to be essential to effective change management. By adopting a management framework, a holistic approach to organisational change, development and innovation can be achieved. Instead of managing change as a series of events, a system wide approach is adopted. The disparate elements of effective management practice: human resources, industrial relations, customer relationship management, leadership strategies and planning processes are all integrated in a model underpinned by a systems approach and informed by systematic data …

The Changing Of The Guard Or : Moving From Paper To "E" With A New Financial Model, Johan Engelbrecht

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The Changing of the Guard, or Moving from Print to “E” with a new Financial Model. Johan Engelbrecht, Univ of Stellenbosch During the past decade academic libraries all over the world have been faced with escalating costs which made budgeting for information resources, and especially academic journals, a nightmare. Libraries in South Africa were no exception, and the matter was made worse by the continuous weakening of the South African currency against major overseas currencies such as the Dollar and the Euro. In 2002 alone the South African Rand weakened by as much as 40% against the American Dollar. This …

Reaching All Students: Teaching Information Seeking Skills Online (Poster), Jay Bhatt, John Meyer, Rafael Sidi Jun 2004

Reaching All Students: Teaching Information Seeking Skills Online (Poster), Jay Bhatt, John Meyer, Rafael Sidi

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

A management issue of increasing importance is the need to provide distance learners the same library services as students who take courses on-site. Remote access to library-provided electronic resources has gone a long way to equalizing access for these students and for others who, because of work or family commitments, find coming to the library difficult. However, we have found that just making the resources available is insufficient; we must also teach the students how to use them effectively. The Drexel Libraries have assumed responsibility for information literacy instruction and have an extensive on-campus instruction program. The logical way too …

Developing A Learning Organisation, Hans Selberg Jun 2004

Developing A Learning Organisation, Hans Selberg

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The learning organisation is an organisation which consciously and continuously betters its capacity to learn and develop both at an individual -, group -, and organisational level. The purpose is to increase efficiency, flexibility and the ability to change. The learning organisation is continually developing its capacity to create its own future. NTNU Library is the second largest university library in Norway, with the nations largest and most comprehensive collections covering technology and architecture. The rapid change from traditional collections to e-resources, seen particularly within technological libraries, may cause a feeling that traditional library-values are being threatened. To counter this, …

Convergence Between Interlibrary Loan And Acquisitions: A Science And Engineering Library Experience, Louis Houle Jun 2004

Convergence Between Interlibrary Loan And Acquisitions: A Science And Engineering Library Experience, Louis Houle

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Libraries are looking at new types of services to improve the dissemination of information to their users. One such new service, the integration of Interlibrary Loan with acquisitions and collection development, looks like a promising approach to meet the users’ information needs. The requests that meet selection criteria are not sent through the regular ILL borrowing channels but are instead turned into rush acquisitions. A special fund was set aside to purchase books requested by users (students, faculty and staff) through ILL processes. The ILL Librarian does both the selection of the ILL requests and the ordering of the books. …

Walking The Talk: Is Your Library A Marketing Oriented Organisation?, Barbara Ewers Jun 2004

Walking The Talk: Is Your Library A Marketing Oriented Organisation?, Barbara Ewers

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Libraries are increasingly vocal about the need to adopt strategic marketing management which is the process of creating and facilitating the exchange of products of value with others. However, the largest proportion of library and information science literature on marketing deals promotion and public relations which is only a small part of the marketing mix. There seems to have been a fragmented application of marketing principles in the management and operation of libraries because they have lacked strategies to translate the marketing management into their functional management. The concept of market orientation provides a framework for applying marketing principles into …

Adapting To Changing User Expectations, Jean Poland Jun 2004

Adapting To Changing User Expectations, Jean Poland

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Results of user surveys indicate that science and technology library user needs differ from those of humanists and social scientists and are changing rapidly. Science and technology libraries are taking the lead in adapting the public services model accordingly. Science and technology library users are most interested in easy-to-use access tools and library Web sites that enable them to find information on their own as well as easy access to materials from home and office. Their expectations are based on the speed of access provided by the Web and through search engines like Google. As fewer users come to the …

'Digital Is Not Different' - Copyright In Digital Environment, Barbara Szczepańska Jun 2004

'Digital Is Not Different' - Copyright In Digital Environment, Barbara Szczepańska

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Development in technology has brought to the libraries new kind of resources. Digital works such as books, periodicals and other materials are now in libraries collections. In spite of the fact that basic principles of copyright remain the same for ”traditional” and digital works. Copyright in digital environment is much more difficult to control because of the ease of creation, modification and distribution of digital copies over networks. Libraries help copyright holders to protect digital works against copyright infringements. On the other hand they represent also users of protected materials, and have a crucial role to play in ensuring the …

Internet In The Library - The Sky Isn't Blue, Błażej Feret, Barbara Szczepańska Jun 2004

Internet In The Library - The Sky Isn't Blue, Błażej Feret, Barbara Szczepańska

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In the past few years, libraries, including academic libraries, became not only a place in which users could find information supporting teaching and research, but also hubs for patron access to the Internet and its vast resources. However, the Internet is not a “good boy”, and the information easily found with search engines or peer-to-peer programs may be used for bad goals. Should academic libraries promote unrestricted access to the Internet for the sake of people’s right to open access to information, or should they rather restrict and filter the incoming information to that actually related to the subjects of …

Infoservices: A Multi-Channel, Multi-Tier Model For Information Service Delivery, Rowan Salt

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Griffith University’s Division of Information Services provides integrated library, information technology and flexible learning services to Griffith’s community of approximately 30,000 staff and students. A Division-wide restructure in 2001 led to the creation of InfoServices, a new organisational unit created from members of library and information technology front-line staff. This unit was presented with the challenge of answering the majority of customer inquiries related to the Division’s products and services. InfoServices seeks to resolve 80% of all customer inquiries at first contact, regardless of product. In order to meet this demand, InfoServices implemented a multi-channel multi-tier service delivery model. InfoServices’ …

Librarians And Engineering Faculty: Partnership Opportunities In Information Literacy And Ethics Instruction, Alice Trussell

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

As the global economy grew in the latter half of the 20th Century, the demand for the mobility of engineers greatly increased. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), an accreditation agency serving primarily the United States, began to look at engineering programs outside of the United States with the intent of establishing recognized reciprocity. Through the Washington Accord, first established in 1989, mutual recognition agreements were signed with accrediting agencies in several countries. In the year 2000, heavily modified ABET standards affecting North America took effect emphasizing qualitative standards as well as quantitative …

Projecting Success: Effective Project Management In Academic Libraries, Stephanie Atkins

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Managing a major project in an academic library can be daunting in the best financial circumstances. However, in the current climate of diminished funding and increased competition, libraries will face the challenge of funding and staffing their initiatives with limited resources. Project management can assist libraries in achieving their projects on schedule and within budget. Best practices in project management are examined in the context of two major projects undertaken at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. The first project was the barcoding of three million in three months in preparation for the transition to a new automated library …
