Japan And The U.S.: Two Free Nations, Two Versions Of Free Press, Eliza Koch

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

The media are important in a democracy; they provide a means of communication between the government and its constituents. They also serve as a fourth branch to check the country’s government. Although these two nations have different histories there are many similarities in the media systems. Both nations have free press, but there are cases when both governmental systems have attempted to censure their media in one form or another. This presentation delves …

County Government Structure And Expenditure, Dovlet H. Babajanov Jan 2014

County Government Structure And Expenditure, Dovlet H. Babajanov

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This research inquired into whether government structure has any influence on expenditure. On the national sample of U.S. county governments several hypotheses were tested. To estimate the influence of structure on expenditure, a linear regression analysis was used. The findings suggest that government structure does have an impact on agencies' expenditure levels. Specifically, findings indicate that traditional Commission structure tends to spend the least, followed by Commission-mayor and the most expensive being Commission-manager.

Playing Games: Governmental Influence And Individual Assertion In Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" Series, Benjamin Jon Geistfeld

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This thesis explores the relationship between The Hunger Games protagonist Katniss Everdeen and the two governments, one led by President Snow and the other led by President Coin, with which she interacts. In my first chapter, I argue that Presidents Snow and Coin both try to influence Katniss to follow their own agendas by dictating certain social conditions to her through laws, educational curricula, and state-sponsored industries. Each President carefully designs these conditions to support their own agendas rather than the agendas of the citizens they govern. I use Louis Althusser's theory of ideology and ideological state apparatuses and Michel …

Origins Of The Commonwealth Of Puerto Rico In The Context Of United States Strategic Interests In The Caribbean (1938-1950), Francisco J. Gonzalez Sosa Jan 1995

Origins Of The Commonwealth Of Puerto Rico In The Context Of United States Strategic Interests In The Caribbean (1938-1950), Francisco J. Gonzalez Sosa

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purpose of this paper is to explore the political and military considerations that provided the frame of reference for the promulgation of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in 1952. Since 1492 possession of this island has been coveted by nations with vital interest in the Caribbean region.
