Tracing Water Sources Of Terrestrial Animal Populations With Stable Isotopes: Laboratory Tests With Crickets And Spiders, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo
Tracing Water Sources Of Terrestrial Animal Populations With Stable Isotopes: Laboratory Tests With Crickets And Spiders, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo

Fluxes of carbon, nitrogen, and water between ecosystem components and organisms have great impacts across levels of biological organization. Although much progress has been made in tracing carbon and nitrogen, difficulty remains in tracing water sources from the ecosystem to animals and among animals (the ‘‘water web’’). Naturally occurring, nonradioactive isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in water provide a potential method for tracing water sources. However, using this approach for terrestrial animals is complicated by a change in water isotopes within the body due to differences in activity of heavy and light isotopes during cuticular and transpiratory water losses. Here …

In this feature article we provide a side-by-side introduction for two research fields quantum chemical calculations of molecular interaction in nucleic acids and RNA structural bioinformatics Our main aim is to demonstrate that these research areas while largely separated in contemporary literature have substantial potential to complement each other that could significantly contribute to our understanding of the exciting world of nucleic acids We identify research questions amenable to the combined application of modern ab initio methods and bioinformatics analysis of experimental structures while also assessing the limitations of these approaches The ultimate aim is to attain valuable physicochemical insights …

Tuning The Morphology Of Au/Cds Nanocomposites Through Temperature-Controlled Reduction Of Gold-Oleate Complexes, Elena Khon, Nishshanka N. Hewa-Kasakarage, Ian Nemitz, Krishna Acharya, Mikhail Zamkov
Tuning The Morphology Of Au/Cds Nanocomposites Through Temperature-Controlled Reduction Of Gold-Oleate Complexes, Elena Khon, Nishshanka N. Hewa-Kasakarage, Ian Nemitz, Krishna Acharya, Mikhail Zamkov
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
A general synthetic strategy for controlling the shape of gold domains grown onto CdS semiconductor nanocrystals is presented. The colloidal growth of Au nanoparticles is based on the temperature-controlled reduction of Au-oleate complexes on the surface of CdS and allows for precise tuning of nanoparticle diameters from 2.5 to 16 nm simply by adjusting the temperature of the growth solution, whereas the shape of Au/CdS nanocomposites can be controllably switched between matchsticks and barbells via the reaction rate. Depending on the exact morphology of Au and CdS domains, fabricated nanocomposites can undergo evaporation-induced self-assembly on a substrate either through end-to-end …

Racing Start Safety: Head Depth And Head Speed During Competitive Starts Into A Water Depth Of 1.22 M, Andrew C. Cornett, Josh C. White, Brian Wright, Alexander P. Willmott, Joel M. Stager
Racing Start Safety: Head Depth And Head Speed During Competitive Starts Into A Water Depth Of 1.22 M, Andrew C. Cornett, Josh C. White, Brian Wright, Alexander P. Willmott, Joel M. Stager
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
From the perspective of swimmer safety, there have been no quantitative 3-dimensional studies of the underwater phase of racing starts during competition. To do so, 471 starts were filmed during a meet with a starting depth of 1.22 m and block height of 0.76 m. Starts were stratified according to age (8 & U, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15 & O) and stroke during the first lap (freestyle, breaststroke, and butterfly). Dependent measures were: maximum head depth, head speed at maximum head depth, and distance from the wall at maximum head depth. For all three there were significant main effects …
A Study Of Factors That Influence The Swimming Performance Of Hispanic High School Students, Karen D. Berukoff, Grant Michael Hill
A Study Of Factors That Influence The Swimming Performance Of Hispanic High School Students, Karen D. Berukoff, Grant Michael Hill
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of swimming performance to six factors including, swimming self-efficacy, fear of drowning, perceived swimming risk, previous swimming opportunities, body image, and perceived athletic skills among high school Hispanic/Latino males and females, ages 13-18. This research also compared differences for each of the variables based on gender. Participants in the study included 71 females and 73 males, ages 13-18, all of Hispanic/Latino ethnic background from one high school. Swimming performance was measured by a Swimming Self-Efficacy Scale. Perceived swimming risk was determined by The Perception of Drowning Risk Survey. Body image, …
The Effects Of Combined Aquatic And Occupational Therapy In Stroke Patients: A Retrospective Study, Robert D. Chetlin, Steven Wheeler, Shelby Crane, Cheryl W. Morris, Lori A. Sherlock
The Effects Of Combined Aquatic And Occupational Therapy In Stroke Patients: A Retrospective Study, Robert D. Chetlin, Steven Wheeler, Shelby Crane, Cheryl W. Morris, Lori A. Sherlock
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this retrospective pilot study was to determine if aquatic therapy (AT) intervention concurrent with occupational therapy (OT) yielded greater functional gains in stroke patients than OT treatment alone. A retrospective chart review was conducted evaluating subjective data from an inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Morgantown, WV. Thirty-nine stroke survivor charts were examined. Patients who received OT with or without concurrent aquatic therapy were included. Differences in the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores in stroke patients who received (a) AT plus conventional OT or (b) conventional OT alone. Discharge bed/chair transfer (p = 0.009) and locomotion (p = 0.01) …
