Telling A Story Through Posters: A Comparison Of Nazi And Soviet Propaganda Posters During World War Ii, Kolbe Bell Jan 2024

Telling A Story Through Posters: A Comparison Of Nazi And Soviet Propaganda Posters During World War Ii, Kolbe Bell

Honors Theses

The time around World War II saw an increase of countries using propaganda to spread their message, the result of which can be seen even today with modern advertising. During the war these countries had to convince their populations to support their militaries in both victories and defeats. Despite the differences between the fascism in Nazi Germany and the communism in the Soviet Union, many of these propaganda posters have some overarching similarities that can be connected. Some of which can be seen in their depictions of the enemy and with their call back to nationalism. To gain a better …

The Impact Of Import Competition On Ceo Emotions: Insights From Earnings Conference Calls 2012-2020, Danting Zhu Jan 2024

The Impact Of Import Competition On Ceo Emotions: Insights From Earnings Conference Calls 2012-2020, Danting Zhu

Honors Theses

Based on our analysis of the transcripts of both the CEO speeches and Q&A sessions from the U.S. S&P 500 and S&P 600 corporations between 2012 and 2020, we have found a substantial correlation between the sentiment expressed in these speeches and the import penetration faced by the firm. We identify 4 main findings: firstly, facing accelerated import competition from China, US firms have expressed more negative sentiments toward topics related to China. Such a deterioration in tone becomes more significant during the Q&A session. Second, large companies, that have closer business relationships with China, have shown larger shifts in …

The Use Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor In Ligament And Tendon Repair, Caroline O'Connell Jan 2024

The Use Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor In Ligament And Tendon Repair, Caroline O'Connell

Honors Theses

The studies in this review have shown that VEGF increases tensile strength, decreases inflammation, and increases vascularization. In studies using exogenous VEGF, it was found that VEGF increases collagen type III fibers, which increases biomechanical strength, and improves graft revascularization. From the research, it can be concluded that endogenous injection of VEGF is more beneficial than exogenous due to endogenous not causing laxity of the connective tissue. VEGF is beneficial when compared to normal post-operative results due to it decreasing the duration of symptoms and decreasing healing time. Using VEGF injection treatments, patients can return to pre-injury activity at a …

Academic Cheating And Stressors At The University Level, Samuel Borge Jan 2024

Academic Cheating And Stressors At The University Level, Samuel Borge

The purpose of this study was to examine why academic cheating occurs. Prior studies have investigated students’ reasons for their academic cheating, and this study aimed to further this research by trying to determine variables that might influence the behavior. A total of 56 Assumption University undergraduate students participated. Self-report measures included the Survey on Academic Dishonesty (SAD) (McCabe & Trevino, 1997), the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen et al., 1983), and a measure of self-control (Tangney et al., 2004). In addition, a novel probability discounting task was created as a second measure of academic cheating. This task assessed participants’ likelihood …

Social And Emotional Learning In The High School Classroom, Olivia Vandoros Jan 2024

Social And Emotional Learning In The High School Classroom, Olivia Vandoros

Honors Theses

The focus of my project was to answer the following question: How can social-emotional learning strategies be implemented for all students at the high school level to assist students in developing social-emotional competencies? To answer this question, I used two main sources of information: (1) a review of literature that is relevant to this topic, and (2) interviews with high school teachers who interact directly with students daily. The end goal of this project was to create a resource for teachers using information collected from both sources to make SEL accessible to students in the high school classroom.

Why Didn't The Republican Majority Repeal The Affordable Care Act In 2017?, Kaitlyn Calnan Jan 2024

Why Didn't The Republican Majority Repeal The Affordable Care Act In 2017?, Kaitlyn Calnan

Honors Theses

The provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were originally designed to be funded through an individual mandate. Thus, after the repeal of the mandate penalty in 2017, most supporters believed the entire ACA would collapse. However, despite a Republican Congressional majority, it has not. How come? While Republicans have generally opposed government involvement in healthcare, today’s Republican party has taken a populist turn. A study of American populism suggests that populism is compatible with government involvement in healthcare. America’s original right populist, the Nebraskan William Jennings Bryan, began a movement that produced electoral success as it moved north, even …

The Integrity Of Women: The Anthropological Vision Of Humanae Vitae, Emily Fasteson Jan 2024

The Integrity Of Women: The Anthropological Vision Of Humanae Vitae, Emily Fasteson

Honors Theses

The Catholic Church has expressed its opposition to contraception from the beginning. Use of the Pill is not coincident with the Church’s vision of the human person, and I will explore the anthropological grounds upon which the Church informs her stance. Modernity has a different anthropology than that of the Church; I seek to unearth and understand the difference between these two views by synthesizing the philosophy and theology behind Humanae vitae, taking its predictions seriously, and analyzing how they have come to fruition in the modern world. My focus is on man’s attempt to overcome his own limits …

The Complexity Behind The Genetics Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Júlia Braga Kenyon Jan 2024

The Complexity Behind The Genetics Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Júlia Braga Kenyon

Honors Theses

It is suggested that more than 600 genes are associated with ASD. Given the high number of potential ASD-linked genes and that the disorder is a complex spectrum, categorization of the ASD-linked genetic alterations will be useful in the attempt to determine a pattern that can ultimately assist in developing genetic risk factor analysis for the disorder. This thesis aims to analyze the possible cellular and molecular mechanisms that are impacted by such ASD-linked gene alterations and how they may give rise to ASD behaviors. By making this connection, this thesis aims to shine a light on the plausible cellular …

Clearing Up Counterfactuals: The Decades-Long Historiographical Debate, Adam Ide

Honors Theses

Do some historians truly know what is best when staying away from counterfactuals, or are other historians right in using them with confidence? I will be uncovering the origin of this disagreement, exploring both sides of the debate, and explaining historians’ approaches and attitudes toward counterfactuals in order to reveal the pitfalls and potentials of the technique.

The Unconstitutional Backlog In The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts Criminal Justice System: A Three Step Plan To Decrease The Delay, Cassidy Louise Elliott Jan 2024

The Unconstitutional Backlog In The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts Criminal Justice System: A Three Step Plan To Decrease The Delay, Cassidy Louise Elliott

Honors Theses

Currently, within the Massachusetts Criminal Justice System, defendants are forced to wait up to 12 months for a trial. These pre-trial delays have significantly detrimental effects on defendants. For example, there are economic implications, strains on personal relationships, and physical and mental health risks associated with incarceration. There are several other criminal justice systems that can provide criminal defendants trials in a timelier manner than Massachusetts. This thesis explores the right to a speedy and fair trial under the U.S. Constitution, the reasons for the potentially unconstitutional delays in Massachusetts, and proposes reforms to ensure individuals accused of a crime …

The Factors Affecting Racial Disparities In The Juvenile Justice System, Julia Martin Jan 2023

The Factors Affecting Racial Disparities In The Juvenile Justice System, Julia Martin

Honors Theses

The neglect of the best interests of minority youth is a problem running rampant in the United States juvenile justice system. In order to address this problem, the factors influencing why racial disparities exist within the juvenile justice system must be known, so that they can eventually be diminished. This thesis will first evaluate prior research on the factors influencing such racial disparities. Once previously discovered factors have been identified and discussed, additional research will be conducted to examine what attempts are currently being made in jurisdictions throughout the country to reduce the influence of these factors in how youth …

To better connect with the potential fan base in the United Kingdom, the NFL created another Instagram account, separate from their main “NFL” account, with the username “NFLUK”. In this thesis, I conducted a content analysis comparing a selection of posts made during the 2021 NFL season for each account, “NFL” and “NFLUK” to examine how the NFL modified their posts and communication for their new target audience. The posts were examined through the perspective of two different communication theories: The Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion and the Adaptation versus Standardization Model of International Marketing. The goal was to determine …

Remedying Unfair Fair Use Judgments In The Music Industry: A Call For Greater Consistency In The Application Of The Four Factors And Transformation Determinations In Copyright Legislation, Abbigail Sullivan Jan 2023

Remedying Unfair Fair Use Judgments In The Music Industry: A Call For Greater Consistency In The Application Of The Four Factors And Transformation Determinations In Copyright Legislation, Abbigail Sullivan

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I have identified weaknesses to the fair use concept in Section 107 in the Copyright Act of 1976. In particular, it is difficult to identify what fair use is in copyright cases because of the ambiguity of the four factors and how they are applied. As a result, inconsistent rulings by judges occur. Therefore, the solution that I propose is to revise the statute to put an appropriate emphasis on the application of all four factors in a cohesive way, specifically the second factor, because the way in which it is viewed now gives it too narrow …

Justice In The American Legal System: Challenges To The Confrontation Clause In Criminal Child Sexual Abuse Cases, Kelsey Savoy Jan 2023

Justice In The American Legal System: Challenges To The Confrontation Clause In Criminal Child Sexual Abuse Cases, Kelsey Savoy

Honors Theses

The following thesis will look at the original intent of the Founders when the Sixth Amendment was written. It will then examine the challenges presented to justice both substantively and procedurally in cases of criminal child sexual abuse specifically, including the challenges faced by victims forced to testify during trial long after the trial is over. After establishing these challenges, this thesis will then examine legal precedent set by the courts that illustrates how exceptions have been made to traditional courtroom procedures over time, such as exceptions to the hearsay rule and in-person testimony on the witness stand, to allow …

Implicit Racial Bias In Healthcare: A Concept Analysis And Call To Action, Rachel Ferguson Jan 2023

Implicit Racial Bias In Healthcare: A Concept Analysis And Call To Action, Rachel Ferguson

Honors Theses

For students pursuing a nursing degree, exposure to implicit bias during their educational program is as concerning as the lack of training to acknowledge and conquer the development of implicit bias. Both facets can root negative attitudes and behaviors in the student nurse that will be carried into their practice throughout the healthcare system. It is a professional obligation for the registered nurse to be aware of implicit bias and understand its strong connection to increased risk of mortality, health complications, and other adverse health outcomes, especially in racial minority patient populations (Maina et al., 2018). This thesis contains a …

The Causes And Ramifications Of The Lack Of Women In The Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Fields, Jill Finn Jan 2023

The Causes And Ramifications Of The Lack Of Women In The Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Fields, Jill Finn

Honors Theses

Women consist of only 27% of workers within the STEM fields while men make up the remaining 73% (Martinez). Several causes contribute to this drastic difference, with one of the main reasons being the lack of confidence that women have in these subject areas. Their lack of confidence often begins in the elementary and middle school grades as a result of teacher bias, fixed mindsets, and a lack of role models, causing young girls to shy away from STEM and turn toward other interests. However, there are ways to fix this problem and if teachers are willing to put the …

Honors Theses

Quantitative ultrasound is a promising alternative method for cancer diagnosis that is non-invasive and cost-effective. This experiment investigated the potential of quantitative ultrasound in diagnosing and differentiating breast and cervical cancer. Using HeLa cells and MDA cells, the speed of sound and attenuation was measured using 5, 10, and 15 MHz transducers. It was found that the speed of sound of the MDA and HeLa cells did not deviate much, with values of 1527.6±3.1 m/s and 1527.5±3.9 m/s, respectively, but the attenuation of the MDA and HeLa did vary, though error in the experiment leaves this conclusion up for debate. …

The Effect Of Gratitude And Compassion On Persuasion Processing, Patrick Otto Jan 2023

The Effect Of Gratitude And Compassion On Persuasion Processing, Patrick Otto

Honors Theses

The present study investigated the relationship between two positive emotions (gratitude and compassion) and persuasion susceptibility. Participants were randomly assigned to be induced to feel gratitude or compassion and read either strong or weak arguments. Participants then rated how favorable they found the arguments. We hypothesized that participants feeling gratitude would be more easily persuaded than those feeling compassion, particularly in the weak argument condition. The hypotheses were not supported. In the strong argument condition, the gratitude and compassion groups were equally persuaded. In the weak argument condition, the compassion group was more persuaded than the gratitude group, though not …

Breakfast Is The Most Important Meal Of The Day: An Investigation Of The Levels Of Cadmium In Breakfast Cereal, Lili Macquarrie

Honors Theses

Cadmium (Cd) is a transition metal that offers no nutritional value to human beings. Humans’ main exposure to Cd is through consumption. Cd is extremely soluble, leading to plants readily absorbing it through contaminated water. Plants containing the absorbed Cd are consumed, and the metal accumulates in the body and is toxic. Effects of Cd in the body include renal tubular damage, pulmonary emphysema, epigenetic changes, and carcinogenesis. Previous studies have looked at Cd in cereal based products, and their results revealed low, varied amounts of Cd in the samples. However, most of these studies were performed in Asian countries. …

Development Of Drug-Drug Interaction Research Techniques Involving The Cyp3a4 Human Liver Enzyme, Sarah Iacoviello

Honors Theses

Understanding the metabolic pathway of a drug is an integral part of pharmaceutical development. Microsomal metabolism is the industry standard to model the metabolism of the drug by the liver in vitro. Our studies employ carbamazepine (CBZ) as a CYP3A4 substrate to develop a method to investigate potential drug-drug interactions involving this enzyme. Toward this end, the metabolite of CBZ, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide (CBZ-E), was synthesized for use as a standard. The purity of the synthesized CBZ-E was 95.2%, and the percent yield was 76.16%. The use of human liver microsomes is a common incubation method used to model drug metabolism …

Honors Theses

A full explanation of how the federal government has made provisions to take down the Mafia that can and have been used against corporate crime through something known as the R.I.C.O. Act of 1970, and how the courts have failed to interpret the laws that were developed with the intent to neutralize both crime syndicates and corporate crimes.

Quality Of School-Based Mental Health Services And Student Well-Being, Angelina Davis Jan 2023

Quality Of School-Based Mental Health Services And Student Well-Being, Angelina Davis

Honors Theses

Schools are essential in providing both students who struggle with mental health problems as well as the overall student population with services that improve well-being. Previous research has shown that, among other factors, the involvement of caregivers is important for the effectiveness of such programs, thus improving their quality. However, there is little evidence about the relationship between the quality of these mental health services and student well-being. This study aimed to fill this gap in literature. It was predicted that high quality mental health services and high caregiver involvement would be associated with increased student well-being, as indicated by …

Modeling The Particle-On-A-Ring Theory In An Undergraduate Laboratory, Courtney Deslauriers Jan 2023

Modeling The Particle-On-A-Ring Theory In An Undergraduate Laboratory, Courtney Deslauriers

Honors Theses

In early chemistry education, students are often taught to think about electrons as small, negatively charged particles existing in planetary orbits around the nucleus of an atom, rather than creating an electron cloud. In reality, electrons exhibit wave-particle duality, and are best described as wave functions. This idea that the electrons travel as waves and are moving around the nucleus so quickly that it is not possible to know the speed or location of an electron at any given moment is extremely abstract and difficult to visualize. This concept is essential to the theory of quantum mechanics, and therefore is …
