Denise Oliver-Vélez - Part 2, Mark Naison, Steven Payne
Denise Oliver-Vélez - Part 2, Mark Naison, Steven Payne
Oral Histories
Denise Oliver-Vélez not only has one of the most remarkable lives to be recorded for both the BHS and Bronx African-American History Project archives, she also possesses a beautiful spirit, simplicity, and generosity in her personality. It would be expected for a person of such prowess to sound the part and be hard to comprehend in all her sophistication. Despite deserving this podium, Oliver-Vélez’s life is a testament to the power that lies in understanding others, rather than acting above them. In finishing an exceptional interview, she makes sure to leave a piece of advice to future communities and those …
Frederick Collins - Part 1, Mark Naison, Steven Payne
Frederick Collins - Part 1, Mark Naison, Steven Payne
Oral Histories
Dr. Collins tells the story of 1520 Sedgwick as a place of loss and morality, where tragic events happened “few and far between,” but the community always looked out for each other and was primarily peaceful and safe. It was this environment, of eager youth and supportive adults, that helped the culture that hip hop would blossom from. The sounds that would subsequently be created were a product of this safe space. Also prevalent in the interview is the accurate account of this development from Collins’ perspective, as one of the first three children to live in the building. He …

Foraging Opportunists: Encouraging Reconnection With The Land, Madelyne Miller, Aine Fannon, Ada Scott, Sylvia Blodorn, Luke Pruitt
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
There is a large cultural disconnect between humans and natural areas, and the utilization of natural resources is rarely reciprocal. In addition, opportunistic (commonly called invasive) plants can outcompete native species if they are not managed, though this management typically involves heavy chemical use. There is also a deficit in resources surrounding other management strategies such as foraging for non-native species. To address these issues, our group has explored the potential uses of opportunistic plants. Initially introduced to novel areas both intentionally and unintentionally, these plants can serve as food, medicine, and art materials. We aim to reduce chemical use …

The Critically Endangered white-bellied heron Ardea insignis is a large-bodied, range-restricted, piscivorous bird of the Himalayan mountains. With fewer than 60 individuals remaining globally, regular monitoring is required for this rare species. We present the results of surveys during 2017 and 2023-2024 in Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh, India. The encounter rate of white-bellied herons in 2017 was 0.55 individuals per km of river, but we did not detect the bird during intensive surveys in the same location during 2023-2024. The surveyed area within the Reserve was once a stronghold for the species, but its population appears to be declining. …

Role Of Absolute Versus Relative Voice Rest In Post-Operative Management Of Benign Vocal Fold Lesions, Mihika Sinha, Suresh Pillai, Shama Shetty, Usha Devadas
Open Access archive
Objective Most otolaryngologists advocate absolute voice rest after laryngeal surgery, which proves difficult for patients, so we decided to evaluate the role of absolute voice rest versus relative voice rest in the post-operative management of benign lesions. Methods Forty patients were recruited and divided in two groups: absolute voice rest and relative voice rest. Pre- and post-operative voice analysis (fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, voice handicap index, voice-related quality-of-life scale scores and compliance) were noted at one week and one month. Results Voice analysis parameters including jitter (p = 0.035), shimmer (p = 0.020), voice handicap index (p < 0.001) and compliance (p < 0.001) were better in the relative voice-rest group. Frequency, number of voice breaks and voice-related quality of life showed no statistically significant results. Conclusion There was no significant benefit of absolute voice rest on post-operative outcomes as determined by acoustic variables. Compliance and quality-of-life scores were low in the strict voice-rest group. Therefore, we should reconsider post-surgical voice-rest protocol.

An Analysis Of (Hu)Manid Using The Usf Donated Skeletal Collection: Estimating Sex And Ancestry For Edentulous Individuals, Natalie S. Wise
An Analysis Of (Hu)Manid Using The Usf Donated Skeletal Collection: Estimating Sex And Ancestry For Edentulous Individuals, Natalie S. Wise
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Human Mandible Identification program, (hu)MANid©, enables anthropologists to estimate the sex and ancestry of unidentified skeletal remains from metric and morphoscopic variables from the mandible. The program is suitable for a variety of anthropological contexts, including forensic casework and bioarchaeological or paleoanthropological analyses. The purpose of this research project is to test the accuracy and applicability of the (hu)MANid program on edentulous mandibles. While the authors of (hu)MANid warn against data collection for edentulous mandibles, there are many circumstances in applied forensic casework where the unidentified person is edentulous. Edentulous individuals experience alveolar resorption, which is the loss of …
Models Of Disability And Judicial Interpretation In India, Sanjay Jain
Models Of Disability And Judicial Interpretation In India, Sanjay Jain
Book Chapters
How disability is modeled or understood is determinative in the evolution of both Disability Studies and Disability Politics. By focusing on India, this chapter demonstrates that transformation and metamorphosis in the lives of persons with disabilities is contingent and predicated on the adoption of models to evolve conceptions of disability and disability rights. Upon the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2006 by India, a presumption arose that the Indian legal order embraced the social and Human rights models of disability and that disability was no longer to be viewed through the prism …

Animal Biographies: Measuring The Efficacy Of Empathy Adjacent Language, Mackenzie R. Bennett
Animal Biographies: Measuring The Efficacy Of Empathy Adjacent Language, Mackenzie R. Bennett
Boise State Graduate Student Projects
With the guidance of a 2019 briefing document from the Seattle Aquarium, Zoo Boise created a new type of exhibit signage meant to encourage personal connection with its animals and empathetic engagement that will hopefully translate to more concern for wildlife conservation in zoo visitors. This new signage provides personal information, such as names, birth dates, and life histories, on the individual animals at Zoo Boise. This is in contrast with traditional zoo exhibit signage, which lists impersonal, species-level information alone. In order to test the efficacy of the new signage in eliciting empathetic engagement, we conducted a comparative study …

Interpersonal Activism: How Local Black Residents Shaped The University Of Mississippi And Oxford In The Mid-Twentieth Century, Anna F. Kaplan
Study the South
"It is difficult to measure the direct impact—and sometimes even the existence—of daily personal interactions on individuals’ thoughts about race and desegregation. Rather than attempting to parse between change stemming from interpersonal relationships versus change as a result of federal intervention, I examine interracial and intraracial interactions across the town/gown divide in Oxford as spheres of influence. Black challenges to White supremacy at UM brought systemic racism into question even though those systems of oppression remained in place."

Digital Orientalism In Machine Vision: A Cross-Platform Analysis Of Ai-Generated Representations Of Indian Culture, Jinu K. Varghese, Padma Rani
Open Access archive
This study investigates how contemporary artificial intelligence image generation systems interpret and reproduce Indian cultural elements through a comparative analysis of three major platforms: Stable Diffusion, Flux, and Midjourney. While these systems have demonstrated remarkable technical capabilities, their handling of non-Western cultural elements remains understudied. We present a novel methodological framework that combines visual social semiotics with digital anthropology to analyse AI-generated images across multiple dimensions, including representational accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and power dynamics. Our systematic analysis of images generated through increasingly sophisticated prompts reveals significant patterns in how these systems mediate cultural representation. Results indicate that while platforms exhibit …

A Parametric Design Approach For Multi-Lobed Hybrid Airships, M. Manikandan, R. R. Shah, P. Priyan, B. Singh
Open Access archive
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the research and development of hybrid airships for various applications. Airship design involves multiple design parameters from various disciplines that interact mutually. Existing design methodologies, however, are often limited to fixed shapes and geometry. This paper provides a comprehensive parametric design approach for the sizing of multi-lobed hybrid air vehicles for low- and high-altitude applications. The proposed design techniques are robust so that the designer has the freedom to change the number of lobes, the relative location of lobes, the envelope profile, and the optimiser for the design optimisation process. …
