Faculty Journal Articles
We report on the optimized fabrication of ultrathin wall nanotubes grown on Ti–Nb alloy via anodization in organic-based electrolytes. The nanotubes are vertically aligned with wall thicknesses of 5–8 nm, diameters of 180–200 nm, and lengths of 2–2.8 μm. Raman spectroscopy and glancing angle x-ray diffraction (GAXRD) measurements indicated the formation of composite oxides of anatase TiO2 and monoclinic Nb2O5. The composite oxides showed better stability at elevated temperatures up to 650 ᵒC and with much smaller induced microstrain compared to the TiO2 counterpart. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed the composition of the fabricated nanotubes as a mixed TiO2–Nb2O5 …

A simple approach is demonstrated to prepare functionalized spongy graphene/cobalt sulfide (FG-CoS)nanocomposites as interconnected, porous 3-dimensional (3D)network crinkly sheets. Such crinkly sheets contain the reduced spongy graphene oxide (SGO)sheets and the intercalated CoS nanoparticles within the spongy graphene. The fabricated FG-CoS composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The synthesized materials were tested as supercapacitor materials in 3 M KOH using cyclic voltammetry (CV)at different potential scan rates, and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests at different current densities. The FG-CoS electrodes showed a maximum specific capacitance of 1072 F/g at a …

Many Nanoparticles (NPs) were reported to significantly enhance the production of biogas from the anaerobic digestion of organic wastes. Herein, two types of NPs (Ni-Ferrite and Ni-Co-Ferrite) were synthesized using the co-precipitation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. Three different concentrations (20, 70 and 130 mg/l) of each type were added to separate biogas reactors to study their effect on the biogas production compared to blank reactor. A pressure-based biogas reactor was designed and manufactured specifically to test the effect of the NPs on the anaerobic …

A novel propitious nano-patterned brass oxide nanowires were fabricated via controlled anodization of α-brass in aqueous electrolytes at room temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)techniques were used to investigate the morphology, structure, and composition of the fabricated materials. The morphology of the resulted structures was found to depend on the concentration of the sodium bicarbonate used for anodization as well as the post treatment. The XRD analysis confirmed the existence of both ZnO and CuO. The XPS results suggest the formation of CuZnO nanowires. The fabricated nanowires showed exceptional optical activity …

A major challenge for astronauts in long-duration space travel is combatting the hazardous spaceflight environment caused by microgravity and increased levels of ionizing radiation. Microgravity damages cellular DNA by increasing the production of harmful reactive oxygen species, while ionizing radiation damages DNA by creating double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) breaks. Cellular damage due to microgravity and radiation has been investigated using ground-based models, but most models consider microgravity and ionizing radiation alone, or asynchronously. Synchronous modeling better mimics spaceflight conditions and can be used to understand the combined effects of microgravity and ionizing radiation. However, commercially available devices to model microgravity and …

Culminating Projects in English
Rhetsec_ examines the rhetorical situation, the rhetorical appeals, and how phishing emails simulate "real" emails in five categories of phishing emails. While the first focus of cybersecurity is security, you must also understand the language of computers to know how to secure them. Phishing is one way to compromise security using computers, and so the computer becomes a tool for malicious language (phishing emails and malware) to be transmitted. Therefore to be concerned with securing computers, then you must also be concerned with language. Language is rhetoric's domain, and the various rhetorical elements which create an identity of the phisher …

Grusky, et al. (2011) refer to the Great Recession as a transformative event that spiraled into as systemic crisis affecting both the public and private sector. Although the origin of the Great Recession was in the collapse of the housing market, it, in turn, created and sustained a crisis in both the financial sector as well as the labor market (Fligstein and Goldstein, 2012). The downturn would eventually lead to the most significant labor market dislocation in the post- Depression era, driving up high and long-term unemployment as well as involuntarily working part-time individuals (Grusky et al. 2011). Each level …
