SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications

The current tensions around racism in public schooling prompted Dr. Edwards, an assistant professor in educational leadership and policy studies, to teach critical race theory and assign a racism audit for doctoral students to use the theory in practice. Students were to complete their racism audit on their school campus. However, several students refused to complete the assignment. Some students refused for fear of job repercussions, while others accused Dr. Edwards of indoctrinating them with liberal political ideologies. This case explores the complexity and dilemmas that faculty encounter as they engage in antiracism leadership teaching during a time of racial …

Measuring The Direct Nurses' And Nurse Leaders' Perceptions Of A Healthy Work Environment Within Acute Care Settings, Penny Susette Huddleston

Nursing Dissertations

Healthy work environments (HWEs) have been described as policies, procedures, and processes designed to empower nurses to meet the organizational objectives and achieve personal satisfaction in the work environment (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, 2005; Lake, 2007; Schmalenberg & Kramer, 2008; Shirey, 2006). Unhealthy work environments (UWEs) throughout healthcare organizations have been linked to absenteeism, ineffective delivery of healthcare to patients and families, higher stress levels, poor communication, and ineffective collaboration and teamwork among healthcare professionals (Heath, Johanson, & Blake, 2004). The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) developed a Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool (HWEAT) for nurses to use …

An Analysis Of The Interplay Between Goal Orientation And Ethical Leadership And The Theoretical Processes Through Which Ethical Leadership Influences Work Outcomes, Dennis John Marquardt

Business Administration Dissertations

Due to recent heightened public awareness of ethics and ethical scandals inbusiness, the ethical leadership construct has become increasingly popular. However, scholars still know little about the predictors of ethical leadership and the specific processes through which ethical leaders influence their followers. Across three different papers, I contribute to the literature by addressing these gaps. The first paper consists of a theoretical review of goal orientation and ethical leadership with specific focus on the interplay between the two constructs. In the second paper I use latent path analysis with a sample of 234 supervisor/subordinate dyads and find leader trait-avoid goal …

The Schooling Of African American Students In Junior High: Exploring The Preparation And Pedagogy Of Effective Teachers, Asha Gibson-Bell

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Today, ethnically diverse learners represent the majority student population enrolled in the U.S. public school system. However, the teacher workforce remains predominately middle-class, female, and White. As ethnically diverse learners, particularly African American students continue to endure gaps in academic achievement, the gaze has shifted to teacher education's abilities to produce effective teachers of this population. While the achievement gap is widely known, the literature concurrently documents a racial discipline gap, as African American students are suspended and expelled more than any other racial ethnicity. Though disparities in achievement and discipline significantly converge in the middle grades (6th-8th), gaps in …

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

On a national scale Latinos are the fastest growing segment of the population, and in the state of Texas the Hispanic population is projected to eclipse non-Hispanic whites as the largest race or ethnic group within the next decade. However, today we are experiencing a growing gender gap in academic achievement across the P-16 educational continuum. In fact, compared to their Latina peers, Latino males are more likely to repeat a grade, be suspended and expelled, placed in special education, diagnosed as ADHD, and dropout or be pushed out of school. Additionally, Latino males’ continue to be underrepresented in U.S. …

The Impact Of Green Walls And Roofs To Urban Microclimate In Downtown Dallas, Texas: Learning From Simulated Environments, Dalit Bielaz Sclar

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Microclimate refers to a localized zone where the climate is different than the surrounding area. In dense urban areas, climate is affected by "urban thermo-physical and geometrical characteristics, anthropogenic activities and heat sources" (Dimoudi et.al. 2013, p.1). Materials such as brick, asphalt, and concrete absorb the sun's energy, and then heat-up, and re-radiate that heat into the ambient air, creating urban heat island effects. These effects can be partially mitigated by modifying the physical surface and mass properties of buildings. By adding vegetation and soil, in addition to the shade made by surrounding buildings, seasonal energy gain may be modified. …

The Moderating Effect Of Perceived Ethical Leadership On Reduced Audit Quality Behaviors, Kimberly J. Webb

Accounting Dissertations

As auditors perform the audit, they are faced with many decisions that ultimately affect the quality of the audit and can lead to the issuance of an improper audit opinion such as accepting weak management explanations without corroborating evidence, superficial review of client documentation, premature sign off of audit procedures, or underreporting of time spent on audit task. In this study, I investigate the impact of the perceived ethical leadership (EL) of the audit supervisor upon the auditor's propensity to engage in reduced audit quality (RAQ) acts. This question is of particular interest considering the renewed focus placed upon audit …

As the student population across the nation becomes increasingly diverse, educators are constantly met with challenges that go beyond teaching. While the Latino population continues to grow, and the projection of the U.S. becoming a majority-minority nation is fulfilled, it is important to pay close attention to the educational inequities and challenges that continue to exist for students of color. Parents of color , which is defined in this study as Hispanic parents of Mexican origin, have been urged to actively participate in schools in an effort to increase student achievement. However, the literature seldom distinguishes between the experiences of …
