With the apparent need for qualified neonatal nurse practitioners in Iowa, the University of Iowa understood the importance of starting a neonatal nurse practitioners program. The University of Iowa College of Nursing and the University of Missouri-Kansas City formed a partnership to educate neonatal nurse practitioners. IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) using surgically retrieved spermatozoa (SRS) is a key option in the treatment of severe male infertility. It was aimed to develop a computational model for the prediction of this modality's outcome. A dataset of 113 exemplars, derived from patients who underwent IVF/ICSI with SRS, was retrospectively analysed. The dataset, containing input features maternal age, sperm retrieval technique, type of spermatozoa used, type of male factor and output intrauterine pregnancy, was randomized into a modelling ('training') set of 83 and cross-validation ('test') set of 30. neUROn++, a set of C++ programs, was used to model the dataset …

To determine predictive values of routine semen analysis, sperm morphology evaluation using strict criteria and DNA status for in-vitro fertilization (IVF), 66 consecutive couples undergoing IVF in a university hospital IVF programme were prospectively investigated. Semen samples from 66 men were evaluated by routine semen analysis, morphology evaluation using strict criteria and acridine orange staining for determination of DNA status. A new technique is described for acridine orange scoring which consisted of evaluation of two smears per case, with and without heat treatment. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to test whether C5a peptidase encapsulated within a biodegradable polymer can act as a vaccine and elicit an immune response to prevent group B streptococci (GBS) infection in mice and provide protection to pups. STUDY DESIGN: C5a peptidase was encapsulated in semipermeable microspheres of poly(lactide-co-glycolide). Female ICR mice were immunized with encapsulated C5a peptidase, free C5a peptidase, or empty microparticles. Booster doses were given at days 21 and 42. A model was developed and compared to experimental results for prediction of the induction period during drug delivery from various compositions of biodegradable copolymer PLGA microparticles. The uniqueness of this model is that it considers transient pore evolvement and uses the kinetic parameters of polymer degradation, which are independent of experimental measurements of microparticle erosion, in its analysis. Delivery data from PLGA microparticles (50:50, 75:25, and 85:15) releasing ovalbumin (OVA, 46 kDa) and bovine serum albumin (BSA, 66 kDa) were determined and used as the model systems. Low pO(2) is perhaps the most significant factor in artificial pancreas failure. In these environments, not only is the beta cell production of insulin reduced, but the cell death rate is also significantly higher. Mathematical models are developed to test the feasibility of facilitated oxygen transport in enhancing O(2) flux to genetically engineered cells in a bioartificial device such as a pancreas. For this device, it is proposed that beta cells be genetically engineered to express myoglobin throughout the cell. The genetic model of tumorigenesis by Vogelstein et al. (V theory) and the molecular definition of cancer hallmarks by Hanahan and Weinberg (W theory) represent two of the most comprehensive and systemic understandings of cancer. Here, we develop a mathematical model that quantitatively interprets these seminal cancer theories, starting from a set of equations describing the short life cycle of an individual cell in uterine epithelium during tissue regeneration. Switching transients resulting from the energisation of high voltage cable systems may have a significant effect on both the cables being switched as well as the power system components in the vicinity. The impacts of these transients on such cables are measured based on the stress arising as a result of the voltage and current peaks and the frequency of oscillatory transients. The steady-state treatment of industrial wastewaters in a cascade reactor with recycle is analyzed. A number of cascades with alternative arrangements of the settling units are considered. Specifically, we consider the case when the recycle stream leaving a settling unit which is placed around a reactor goes back into the feed stream for that reactor. The Contois kinetic model is used to study the degradation of biodegradable organic materials. The steady-state production of a product produced through the growth of microorganisms in a continuous flow bioreactor is presented. A generalised reactor model is used in which both the classic well-stirred bioreactor and the idealised membrane bioreactor are considered as special cases. The reaction is assumed to be governed by Monod growth kinetics subject to non-competitive product inhibition. Inhibition is modelled as a decaying exponential function of the product concentration. This reaction scheme is well documented in the literature, although a stability analysis of the governing equations has not previously been presented. Many industrial processes, particularly in the food industry, produce slurries or wastewaters containing high concentrations of biodegradable organic materials. Before these contaminated wastewaters can be discharged the concentration of the biodegradable organic pollutant must be reduced. One way to do this is to pass the wastewater through a bioreactor containing biomass which grows through consumption of the pollutant. Anaerobic conditions are often favoured for the processing of waste materials with high levels of biodegradable organic pollutants as these can be removed with low investment and operational costs. New physical processes specific for microdosimetry simulation are under development in the Geant4 Low Energy Electromagnetic package. The first set of models implemented for this purpose cover the interactions of electrons, protons and light ions in liquid water; they address a physics domain relevant to the simulation of radiation effects in biological systems, where water represents an important component. The design developed for effectively handling particle interactions down to a low energy scale and the physics models implemented in the first public release of the software are described.

"Purpose: Lethal cell damage by ionising radiation is generally initiated by the formation of complex strand breaks, resulting from ionisation clusters in the DNA molecule. With model-based seasonal adjustment, the sub-series may also be considered as amultivariate system of series and the analysis may be done jointly. The principal anthropogenic factors driving reef degradation have been known for years, if not decades. Overfishing, sedimentation and nutrient loads are just some of the key impacts of human activities in and around reef communities. Therefore, the future of reefs does not rely on generating new knowledge, but rather on implementing and integrating the knowledge we already have. This will require creating effective links between researchers, managers and communities to promote mutual learning, negotiation and collaborative action for reef management. In this paper multiplicative mixed models have been used for the analysis of multi-environment trial (MET) data for canola oil and grain yield. Information on pedigrees has been included to allow for the modelling of additive and nonadditive genetic effects. The MET data set included a total of 19 trials (synonymous with sites or environments), which were sown across southern Australia in 2007 and 2008. Each trial was designed as a p-rep design using DiGGeR with the default prespecified spatial model. Over the last decade there has been growing demand for estimates ofpopulation characteristics at small area level. Unfortunately, cost constraints in thedesign of sample surveys lead to small sample sizes within these areas and as a resultdirect estimation, using only the survey data, is inappropriate since it yields estimateswith unacceptable levels of precision. Small area models are designed to tackle thesmall sample size problem.
