Types Of Communication Triads Perceived By Young-Adult Stepchildren In Established Stepfamilies, Leslie Baxter, Dawn Braithwaite, L. Bryant Aug 2014

Types Of Communication Triads Perceived By Young-Adult Stepchildren In Established Stepfamilies, Leslie Baxter, Dawn Braithwaite, L. Bryant

Dawn O. Braithwaite

This study was an analysis of the kinds of residential parent-stepparent-stepchild triadic communication structures expressed in interviews with 50 college-aged children from established stepfamilies. In an interpretive analysis of the interview transcripts, four communication structures were identified. In the linked triad the stepchild relied on indirect communication with the stepparent through his or her residential parent. The outsider triad was characterized by the stepchild communicating primarily with the residential parent with limited awareness of interdependence with the stepparent. In the adult-coalition triad the stepchild perceived that the residential parent and stepparent had formed a coalition, leading to cautious and distrustful …

The Divorce Decree, Communication, And The Structuration Of Coparenting Relationships In Stepfamilies, Paul Schrodt, Leslie Baxter, M. Mcbride, Dawn Braithwaite, Mark Fine Aug 2014

The Divorce Decree, Communication, And The Structuration Of Coparenting Relationships In Stepfamilies, Paul Schrodt, Leslie Baxter, M. Mcbride, Dawn Braithwaite, Mark Fine

Dawn O. Braithwaite

sing Giddens's (1984) structuration theory, this study explored the communicative processes surrounding the divorce decree in coparenting relationships in stepfamilies. Participants included 21 adults who were coparenting children in stepfamilies who completed diary entries of all interactions with coparents over a 2-week period, and who completed follow-up interviews. Results revealed two structures of signification with respect to the divorce decree that enabled and constrained coparenting interactions. The first signification structure was one in which the decree was framed as a legal document, dictating the rights and responsibilities of parenting, especially with respect to child access and financial issues. The second …

The Southern Tree Of Liberty - The Democratic Movement In New South Wales Before 1856, Terry Irving Jan 2014

The Southern Tree Of Liberty - The Democratic Movement In New South Wales Before 1856, Terry Irving

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

Responsible government began in New South Wales after two decades of radical democratic agitation. Radical intellectuals from England, Ireland, Scotland and Europe mobilized the working men and women of the colony to resist the aristocratic form of government proposed by pastoralists and city capitalists. There was violence on the streets and goldfields, and some notable electoral victories. As 'a great fear' gripped the local elites the British government forced them to accept a more liberal form of representative government in the belief that this would placate the democrats and keep the colony safe for British imperial needs.

Depressed Contractile Responses To Neurokinin A In Idiopathic But Not Neurogenic Overactive Human Detrusor Muscle, Donna Sellers, Christopher Chapple, Douglas Hay, Russell Chess-Williams Sep 2011

Depressed Contractile Responses To Neurokinin A In Idiopathic But Not Neurogenic Overactive Human Detrusor Muscle, Donna Sellers, Christopher Chapple, Douglas Hay, Russell Chess-Williams

Russ Chess-Williams

Objective: The role of tachykinins such as neurokinin A in regulating bladder function is unclear, but NK2 receptors seem to mediate contraction in the human bladder and it has been suggested that these peptides may have a role in the pathophysiology of bladder dysfunction. The present study investigates neurokinin receptor-mediated contractility of detrusor muscle in the idiopathic overactive and neurogenic overactive bladder and investigates the neurokinin receptor subtypes involved.

Methods: Human bladder was obtained from patients undergoing cystectomy (normal) or clam cystoplasty (idiopathic overactive) and from patients with spinal injuries (neurogenic overactive). Strips of isolated detrusor muscle were mounted in …

Building Digital Libraries For Scientific Data: An Exploratory Study Of Data Practices In Habitat Ecology, Christine Borgman, Jillian Wallis, Noel Enyedy

Jillian C Wallis

As data become scientific capital, digital libraries of data become more valuable. To build good tools and services, it is necessary to understand scientists’ data practices. We report on an exploratory study of habitat ecologists and other participants in the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing. These scientists are more willing to share data already published than data that they plan to publish, and are more willing to share data from instruments than hand-collected data.

Policy issues include responsibility to provide clean and reliable data, concerns for liability and misappropriation of data, ways to handle sensitive data about human subjects arising …

Conflicting Messages: Overweight And Obesity Advertisements And Articles In Black Magazines, Michelle Campo, Teresa Mastin

Michelle L. Campo

Three-quarters of U.S. Black women are overweight or obese, putting them at increased risk of multiple diseases, poorer quality of life, and a shorter life span. Media provide important normative information regarding overweight and obesity. This study examines Black women's magazines' food and non-alcoholic beverage advertisements and overweight and obesity editorial content to determine whether the products advertised and the articles' content models or inhibits healthy diet and physical activity as strategies to prevent and overcome overweight and obesity. Five hundred food and non-alcoholic beverage ads and 31 related articles printed in a sample of Ebony (n = 60), Essence …

The Effect Of Surface Electrical Stimulation On Hyolaryngeal Movement In Normal Individuals At Rest And During Swallowing, Joan Payne Nov 2006

The Effect Of Surface Electrical Stimulation On Hyolaryngeal Movement In Normal Individuals At Rest And During Swallowing, Joan Payne

Joan Payne

Surface electrical stimulation is currently used in therapy for swallowing problems, although little is known about its physiological effects on neck muscles or swallowing. Previously, when one surface electrode placement was used in dysphagic patients at rest, it lowered the hyolaryngeal complex. Here we examined the effects of nine other placements in normal volunteers to determine 1) whether movements induced by surface stimulation using other placements differ, and 2) whether lowering the hyolaryngeal complex by surface electrical stimulation interfered with swallowing in healthy adults. Ten bipolar surface electrode placements overlying the submental and laryngeal regions were tested. Maximum tolerated stimulation …

Offshoring And Unemployment, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan Nov 2006

Offshoring And Unemployment, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Priya Ranjan

In this paper, in order to study the impact of offshoring on sectoral and economywide rates of unemployment, we construct a two sector general equilibrium model in which labor is mobile across the two sectors, and unemployment is caused by search frictions. We find that, contrary to general perception, wage increases and sectoral unemployment decreases due to offshoring. This result can be understood to arise from the productivity enhancing (cost reducing) effect of offshoring. If the search cost is identical in the two sectors, or even if the search cost is higher in the sector which experiences offshoring, the economywide …

Organochlorine Levels In Seawater And Sediment From The Florida Gulf Coast, If Present, Are Low. , Richard B. Philp Nov 2006

Organochlorine Levels In Seawater And Sediment From The Florida Gulf Coast, If Present, Are Low. , Richard B. Philp

Richard B. Philp

Seawater and sediment from the Florida panhandle coast were assayed for a panel of 28 organochlorine insecticides and PCBs. No samples exeeded the detection limits of the analytical technique, which were well below levels reported for other ocean locales. Organochlorine levels in this area of the Gulf must be very low. This does not preclude their biomagnificatioon up the food web.

Organochlorine Levels In Seawater And Sediment From The Florida Gulf Coast, If Present, Are Low., Richard B. Philp

Richard B. Philp

Abstract Seawater and bottom sediment from two areas of the Gulf of Mexico near-shore waters along the Florida panhandle, one near Panacea (South of Tallahassee) and the other, St. Joseph Bay, about 100 km to the west, were analyzed for organochlorines (OCs). The first area is contiguous with the open water of Apalachee Bay and receives significant fresh water inflow. The second is a long, narrow bay with a north-facing mouth adjacent to the mainland and little fresh water inflow. Samples were analyzed for a panel of 28 OCs including several insecticides and metabolites as well as hexaxhlorobenzene and total …

Photographic Observations On The Disorganization Of Rural Communities, Kenneth Tunnell Oct 2006

Photographic Observations On The Disorganization Of Rural Communities, Kenneth Tunnell

Kenneth Tunnell

Across the globe, rural communities and small towns are undergoing fundamental and at times rapid change. Within some rural areas of the US, the decline of the family farm and the housing development of the country side race along. In addition, the Wal-Marting of rural America and the demise of locally owned businesses alter the small town landscape. Once-quaint hamlets are becoming vastly different places than of only a generation ago. This photo essay, focusing especially on the central Appalachian region of the US, visually describes these vast changes effecting rural communities and small towns. Photographs of defunct independent businesses …
