A New Autonomous Underwater Vehicle For Imaging Research, C. Roman, O. Pizarro, R. Eustice, H. Singh Aug 2000

A New Autonomous Underwater Vehicle For Imaging Research, C. Roman, O. Pizarro, R. Eustice, H. Singh

Christopher N. Roman

Currently, unmanned underwater vehicles either tend to be cumbersome and complex to run, or operationally simple, but not quite suitable platforms for deep water imaging. This paper presents an alternative design in the form of a new low cost and easier to use autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for imaging research. The objective of the vehicle is to serve as a readily available and operationally simple tool that allows rapid testing of imaging algorithms in areas such as photomosaicking, 3D image reconstruction from a single camera, image based navigation, and multi-sensor fusion of bathymetry and optical data. These are all current …

Allelic Modifications Of The Cg2 And Cg1 Genes Do Not Alter The Chloroquine Response Of Drug-Resistant Plasmodium Falciparum, David A. Fidock, Takashi Nomura, Roland A. Cooper, Xin-Zhuan Su, Angela K. Talley, Thomas E. Wellems Aug 2000

Wellems

Roland A. Cooper

The determinant of chloroquine resistance (CQR) in a Plasmodium falciparum cross was previously mapped by linkage analysis to a 36 kb segment of chromosome 7. Candidate genes within this segment have been previously shown to include two genes, cg2 and cg1, that have complex polymorphisms linked to the CQR phenotype. Using DNA transfection and allelic exchange, we have replaced these polymorphisms in CQR parasites with cg2 and cg1 sequences from chloroquine sensitive parasites. Drug assays of the allelically-modified lines show no change in the degree of CQR, providing evidence against the hypothesis that these polymorphisms are important to the CQR …

Environmental Justice: Grassroots Activism And Its Impact On Public Policy Decision Making, Robert D. Bullard, Glenn S. Johnson Aug 2000

Environmental Justice: Grassroots Activism And Its Impact On Public Policy Decision Making, Robert D. Bullard, Glenn S. Johnson

Glenn S Johnson

A growing body of evidence reveals that people of color and low-income persons have borne greater environmental and health risks than the society at large in their neighborhoods, workplace, and playgrounds. Over the last decade or so, grassroots activists have attempted to change the way government implements environmental, health, and civil rights laws. Grassroots groups have organized, educated, and empowered themselves to improve the way government regulations and environmental policies are administered. A new movement emerged in opposition to environmental racism and environmenttal injustice. Over the last decades or so, grassroots activists have had some success in changing the way …

Predicting Change In Depression Following Renal Transplantation: Effect Of Patient Coping Preferences, Alan Christensen, Shawna Ehlers, Katherine Raichle, Andrew Bertolatus, William Lawton Jun 2000

Predicting Change In Depression Following Renal Transplantation: Effect Of Patient Coping Preferences, Alan Christensen, Shawna Ehlers, Katherine Raichle, Andrew Bertolatus, William Lawton

Alan J. Christensen

Improvement in patient quality of life is a central goal of renal transplantation. This study examined the hypothesis that change in depression following transplantation would vary as a function of patient coping preferences. Sixty patients were assessed with the Krantz Health Opinion Survey and the Beck Depression Inventory while on the waiting list for a cadaveric renal transplant. Patients were reassessed approximately 12 months later. Among the 33 patients receiving a transplant during the follow-up period, those with a high preference for health-related information exhibited a substantial reduction in depression. In contrast, patients low in preference for information showed a …

Advances In Fusion Of High Resolution Underwater Optical And Acoustic Data, H. Singh, C. Roman, L. Whitcomb, D. Yoerger Apr 2000

Advances In Fusion Of High Resolution Underwater Optical And Acoustic Data, H. Singh, C. Roman, L. Whitcomb, D. Yoerger

Christopher N. Roman

We report efforts to merge data from the complementary modalities of optical and acoustic sensing for obtaining more accurate representations of the seafloor. We show that the principal obstacles to merging the acoustic and optical imaging modalities are the distortions inherent to each modality. The construction of geometrically accurate photomosaics is dominated by incremental errors arising as individual images are scaled and warped to form the photomosaic. For microbathymetric mapping, principal errors arise from sensor position and orientation calibration parameters that affect our ability to construct maps from sonar data that are commensurate with sensor and navigation resolution. We show …

Outreach To Public Health Professionals: Lessons Learned From A Collaborative Iowa Public Health Project, Linda Walton, Seana Hasson, Faith Ross, Elaine Martin

Linda J. Walton

In 1995, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the Public Health Service (PHS) recommended that special attention be given to the information needs of unaffiliated public health professionals. In response, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Greater Midwest Region initiated a collaborative outreach program for public health professionals working in rural east and central Iowa. Five public health agencies were provided equipment, training, and support for accessing the Internet. Key factors in the success of this project were: (1) the role of collaborating agencies in the implementation and ongoing success of information access outreach projects; (2) knowledge …
