Splenic Stromal Niches Support Hematopoiesis Of Dendritic-Like Cells From Precursors In Bone Marrow And Spleen., Pravin Periasamy, Jonathan Tan, Kristin Griffiths, Helen O'Neill
Jonathan Tan
Objective The aims of this study are to test the ability of stromal cells from murine spleen to support hematopoiesis, to define the tissue source of precursors that seed these hematopoietic niches, and to determine the type of cells produced. Materials and Methods Cloned isolates of murine spleen stroma have been developed that support hematopoiesis. Analysis has been investigated in terms of tissue source of progenitors. Type and number of cells produced were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results Hematopoietic precursors that seed cocultures exist in spleen and bone marrow (BM), but not thymus. Cell production is highest if overlay cells …

A Childe Bibliography: A Hand-List Of The Works Of Vere Gordon Childe, Terry Irving, Peter Gathercole
A Childe Bibliography: A Hand-List Of The Works Of Vere Gordon Childe, Terry Irving, Peter Gathercole
Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)
A hand-list devoted to the published writings of Vere Gordon Childe (1892-1957). It includes political writings, letters to newspapers, and reviews, as well as his books, articles and contributions to books. It covers his Australian years as well his academic career in Britain. Because its aim is to create an historical record of both Childe's work and the continual contemporary interest in his ideas, the list is arranged year by year to highlight his productivity and the periods when attention to his work was greatest. There are four sections: (i) books and monographs; (ii) articles and chapters; (iii) reviews; and …

This book has been produced as a tribute to the work and contributions of ACER's 3rd chief executive. Professor John Keeves on the occasion of his 85th birthday. Professor Keeves has made substantial contributions to key research studies, especially in mathematics and science education. His work laid the foundations for large scale assessments of student learning that are common place today and for better understanding the complex relationships between students home background, school factors and achievement.

Bank Stock Returns Under Money Supply Endogeneity: Empirical Evidence Using Panel Data, Zatul Badarudin, Mohamed Ariff, Ahmed Khalid
Bank Stock Returns Under Money Supply Endogeneity: Empirical Evidence Using Panel Data, Zatul Badarudin, Mohamed Ariff, Ahmed Khalid
Ahmed Khalid
There is as yet a study of money supply effect on the aggregate bank stock prices using modern money supply theories. Endogenous money theory suggests loans made by banks cause deposits, and, consequently, bank creates money supply. Resulting changes in bank’s loans and deposits affects bank stock returns: Also, consequent credit creations/reductions affect a bank’s profitability, thus stock prices. Whether money endogeneity is in fact the way the money supply behaves has also not yet been widely tested. Applying panel regression and generalized method of moments, this paper provides new evidence on this little explored relationship between endogenous money supply …

Returns To Selecting Value Stocks In Australia – The Aby Filters, Bruce Vanstone, Tobias Hahn, Gavin Finnie

The development of the Financial Crisis throughout 2008 and into 2009 has caused many fund managers to question their Growth based investment models. Interest appears to be again rekindled in the traditional Value based models, where investment decisions are based on sound company fundamentals rather than abstract future growth expectations. This paper reviews a specific set of value based filters for selecting undervalued stocks which appeared in a series of papers published soon after the 2000 Dot-Com debacle. This paper documents the performance of these filters in the Australian stockmarket.

Neural Vs Statistical Classifier In Conjunction With Genetic Algorithm Feature Selection In Digital Mammography, Ping Zhang, Brijesh Verma, Kuldeep Kumar
Kuldeep Kumar
Digital mammography is one of the most suitable methods for early detection of breast cancer. It uses digital mammograms to find suspicious areas containing benign and malignant microcalcifications. However, it is very difficult to distinguish benign and malignant microcalcifications. This is reflected in the high percentage of unnecessary biopsies that are performed and many deaths caused by late detection or misdiagnosis. A computer based feature selection and classification system can provide a second opinion to the radiologists in assessment of microcalcifications. The research proposes and investigates a neural-genetic algorithm for feature selection in conjunction with neural and statistical classifiers to …

Crisis, Tragedy And Recovery Network Case Study: Iowa City Flood Archive, Paul A. Soderdahl
Paul A Soderdahl
The rapidly expanding digital library network Crisis, Tragedy and Recovery (CTR) was funded in 2009 by the National Science Foundation through a three year grant. CRT captures and stores information for spontaneous events so users can access, search, analyze, and study these collections and learn from events and tragedies that happen around the world and across cultures and languages.
The panel will discuss the need for this distributed digital library and the project’s objectives, as well as some of the challenges faced. Topics will include lessons learned, best practices, and the connections between automated text mining, storytelling technologies, expert recommendations, …

Chair: Christopher Gore, Ryerson University Alan J. Tomkins Public Engagement for Informing Science and Technology Policy: What do We Know? And What do We Need to Know? Abstract: This manuscript examines the social science literature relevant to public engagements and identifies the challenges that confront the Obama Administration concerning effective and meaningful public input into science and technology policy, with a focus on nanotechnology. Specifically, when considering “which forms, features, and conditions of public engagement are optimal for what purposes, and why?” we find that, to date, social science has offered relatively little to clarify matters. We call for systematic …

Nothing To Sneeze At! A Study Into Intra-Operative Contamination, David Graham, Benjamin Parkinson, Meghan Evans, Gerben Keijzers, Petra Derrington
Gerben Keijzers
Purpose: We performed a prospective study of sneezes from orthopaedic registrars to assess the potential for intra-operative contamination from a masked surgeon, and to determine if head position can alter the potential for contamination. Type of Study: Prospective controlled trial. Methods: Four orthopaedic registrars from the Gold Coast Hospital each inhaled pepper to precipitate a sneeze. Cultures were taken with and without standard Smith & Nephew™ surgical masks, in positions directly in front and to the sides of a masked registrar. The process was repeated three times for each registrar. A control plate was left exposed to the atmosphere. A …

Responding to migrants’ many, ongoing involvements with their home communities, sending states have increasingly adopted policies of diaspora engagement, seeking both to retain the emigrants’ loyalties and shape their attachments so as best to meet home state leaders’ goals. This paper seeks to gain traction on the politics of diaspora engagement by studying two contrasting aspects of the Mexican experience – expatriate voting, a relatively new development, and provision of the matrícula consular, a long-standing component of traditional consular services, though one that has recently been transformed. Focusing on the complex set of interactions linking migrants, sending states, and receiving …

Do Profit Maximisers Take Cold Showers? Another Look At Protection And Technical Efficiency, Neil Campbell, Jeffrey Kline
Do Profit Maximisers Take Cold Showers? Another Look At Protection And Technical Efficiency, Neil Campbell, Jeffrey Kline
Neil Campbell
In this paper we consider whether a 'cold shower' is possible if the firm we are analysing is a conventional neoclassical profit-maximising firm facing competitively determined prices. In the context of this analysis, the term 'cold shower' refers to a situation where the removal of a protective subsidy induces investment in a cost-reducing technology. First we show that if the investment lowers marginal cost everywhere, then our firm will never respond to the removal of the subsidy by making the investment. We then use this result to carefully construct examples where the investment does not lower marginal cost everywhere. These …
