The aim of this research was to explore the differences in the usage of the verbs "rise" and "raise" in their verb forms. This is a corpus-based study, conducted through both qualitative and quantitative methods, to provide a comprehensive analysis. The findings of this research were extracted from two major linguistic resources: the British National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Additionally, thirty third-year students participated in an online survey where they were tested on their ability to correctly choose between the two verbs. The study revealed that "rise" is used more frequently than "raise," highlighting a notable …

Effect Of Metals On Polyphenol Oxidase Enzyme Activity From Salix Alba, Cengiz Cesko, Gulnur Arabaci, Esra Altintig, Hyrie Koraqi Oct 2024

Effect Of Metals On Polyphenol Oxidase Enzyme Activity From Salix Alba, Cengiz Cesko, Gulnur Arabaci, Esra Altintig, Hyrie Koraqi

UBT International Conference

Heavy metals are one of the main factors causing environmental pollution. They have toxic effects on plants and animals even in small concentrations. However, some metals act as cofactors in many enzymes in living systems. These metals are of great importance for enzymes to work actively. Metals such as zinc, iron, copper and magnesium play an important role for the activity of enzymes in the structure of plants. However, heavy metals inhibit or slow down the enzymes that play an active role in the organism of living organisms and prevent the functioning of the biochemical reactions they catalyze. Polyphenol oxidase …

UBT International Conference

In Kosovo, milk production represents one of the main economic activities from agriculture for thousands of households. Recently, a disturbing practice that is damaging the quality of this vital product has been observed, namely the adulteration of milk by adding water to it, a practice used by some unscrupulous producers. This irresponsible practice not only damages the milk industry and producers, but also has an effect in the reduction of milk quality, especially in the chemical parameters of protein, fat and in the physical parameters of its density. In addition, the presence of adulterated milk in the consumer market undermines …

Evolution And Biogeography Of High Appalachian Rove Beetles (Staphylinidae), Adam Haberski May 2024

Evolution And Biogeography Of High Appalachian Rove Beetles (Staphylinidae), Adam Haberski

All Dissertations

The southern Appalachian Mountains are a region of great species richness and a center of endemism in many taxa, including flightless arthropods. High elevation refugia have facilitated the persistence of ancient lineages (paleoendemism) and in situ speciation (neoendemism), but their ubiquity, timing, and relative importance is unknown. Congruent patterns among co-distributed, but independent taxa might illuminate common drivers of Appalachian endemism. In this dissertation, I investigated the influence of allopatric speciation, geography, and paleoclimate events on the diversification of endemic species in two genera of rove beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae), Lathrobium Gravenhorst and Ischnosoma Stephens, using an integrative morphological and molecular …

Preliminary Results On Survey About Noise Pollution Sources In Kosovo, Egzon Bajraktari, Katarina Palushaj, Lyra Bakija, Egzona Ymeri, Besart Ymeri

UBT International Conference

Urban landscape in Kosovo has changed rapidly in the last two decades. Many urban development and infrastructure projects were carried out. Density of the urban fabric has increased and urban sprawl has stretched out city boundaries. On the other hand and at the same time people’s lifestyle has changed and their living standard has increased as well, which can be seen, for example, in the increased number of cars in traffic. All of these developments lead to a noisy environment in Kosovo. Noise pollution is spread out as a phenomenon in Kosovo urban environments though not so much addressed or …

The No-Self Thesis: Counterarguments From Abnormal Psychology, Elma Berisha Sep 2023

The No-Self Thesis: Counterarguments From Abnormal Psychology, Elma Berisha

UBT International Conference

The no-self thesis is said to originate in David Hume’s (1739) “bundle theory of self,” questioning the human self as a mere bundle of fleeting perceptions without ontological reality. In contemporary discourse, the self is sandwiched between top-down and bottom-up reductionisms: those with biological and cognitive arguments that reduce the self to a lower, ontological level, on the one hand, and those who hold cultural-linguistic constructionist positions, on the other hand, reducing the self to a higher level. In both cases, self reductionism is a prelude to complete self elimination. On these conceptions, what we call “self” may be nothing …

Bureaucratic Overreach And The Role Of The Courts In Protecting Representative Democracy, Katie Cassady May 2023

Bureaucratic Overreach And The Role Of The Courts In Protecting Representative Democracy, Katie Cassady

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

Although only four departments at the United States’ founding, the American bureaucracy has expanded to address nearly every issue of public life. While these agencies are ostensibly under congressional oversight through monetary allowance and the supervision of the President as part of the executive branch, they consistently usurp their discretionary authority and bypass the Founders’ design of legislative power vested solely in a bicameral legislature.

The Supreme Court holds an indispensable role in mitigating the overreach of bureaucratic agencies. However, despite their obligation to protect the rights of the American people, the courts’ inability to hold bureaucrats accountable has diluted …

Extending The Frontiers Of The Detective Novel In Adaora Ulasi’S The Man From Sagamu, Onyeka Odoh Jun 2022

Extending The Frontiers Of The Detective Novel In Adaora Ulasi’S The Man From Sagamu, Onyeka Odoh

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Part of the beauty of detective literature is the mental engagement and psychological contest it stages between the author and the readers, as well as its fascinating probe into the nature and dynamism of crime. However, of greater import are the formulaic structural elements that define the genre—a crime, the detection of the crime, an omniscient detective who intelligently investigates the crime, and a justified resolution of all. Though the structure of Adaora Ulasi’s The Man from Sagamu does not exactly fit into the above model, it is still a detective novel. Therefore, this essay aims to propose a new …

Libraries Advancing Social Justice And Improving The Health Care Of The Lgbtqai+ Communities, Kayo Denda, Daniel Delmonaco, Victoria Wagner Oct 2021

Libraries Advancing Social Justice And Improving The Health Care Of The Lgbtqai+ Communities, Kayo Denda, Daniel Delmonaco, Victoria Wagner

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

LGBTQAI+ communities have faced discrimination in health care due to inadequate medical care, unfair health insurance policies and entrenched prejudice. To remedy this situation, many medical schools and hospitals have created co-curricular interventions, such as events and programs and new staff positions to address this issue. This librarian-led collaboration challenges and advances the discussion on comprehensive LGBTQAI+ health care and promotes deeper understanding of LGBTQAI+ communities by transforming health professionals’ cultural competency and compassionate health care practices towards equity and social justice.

This project – Babs Siperstein Humanities and Medicine Series - was born when the faculty affiliated with the …

Progressive Librarianship In “Red” America, Bill Crowley Oct 2021

Progressive Librarianship In “Red” America, Bill Crowley

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

Progressive Librarianship in “Red” America

Abstract

A number of library-related illusions remain in the wake of Biden’s defeat of Trump in the 2020 presidential election. While it is tempting for progressives to see “Trump Country” as consisting only of the states won by the former president, over 38 million of the more than 74,000,000 votes for Trump were cast in states won by Biden. Additionally, librarians who are overwhelmingly liberal, cherish such beliefs as (1) documented facts are able to change the minds of opponents, and (2) critical theories will somehow be acceptable for guiding service in communities dominated by …

Carolina African Runner Peanuts: Connecting African And Alabamian Agricultural History, Abby West, Gary Padgett, Matthew D. Campbell May 2021

Carolina African Runner Peanuts: Connecting African And Alabamian Agricultural History, Abby West, Gary Padgett, Matthew D. Campbell

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Social Studies has the potential to impact STEAM education in unrealized ways. It can have this impact by being meaningful, integrative, value-based, challenging, and active. This article examines teaching about Carolina African Runner peanuts and the history of Alabama’s agriculture. The introduction of peanuts to Alabama and the enslavement of African people cannot be removed from a lesson such as this – nor should it. It is through value-based education that social studies contributes the most to STEM and STEAM lessons. This article is significant in that it demonstrates a history lesson that is active rather than passive. This article …

Library Publishing Curriculum

Sometimes a text-based format will not serve an author’s need –time for a more unique presentation! When does material and research require a multi-modal product? How do you help the author create the final product, be it a database, a video, an interactive work, a website, or an online course? What kinds of files can you accept, publish, and preserve? What material requires any kind of review, and how is that review validated? Who will maintain the site and who gets credit for the creation? Do you have access to a digital humanities center or humanities librarian, and if so …
