Minorities in the foster care system experience an adverse childhood due to the systemic issues present within foster care. The adversities faced by Latinx and Hispanic youth in the foster care system is a continuous problem causing significant disparities within the foster care system. The problems Latinx/Hispanic youth face are unique to this population in the areas of culture and policy. Disparities show that the current system does not utilize equitable practices and there is progress to be made with child welfare policies. This qualitative study aims to understand the different challenges and supports newcomer families experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also seeks to understand the association between support received and ethnic representation in schools. Participants for this study were parents from the pilot evaluation of a school-based intervention for newcomer youth. Interviews and school demographics were analyzed to identify challenges, supports, and ethnic/racial congruence.Newcomer parents experienced challenges with meeting human needs, such as financial, health, and academic challenges. The study also concludes that schools should work towards better demographic collection that represents all students and their multiple identities.

This presentation will discuss the implementation and scale-up of an evidence-based Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TSY) program as a part of a larger community-wide safety and resilience-building effort. It will explain the effectiveness of TSY interventions for both clinical and non-clinical populations and highlight the physical, mental, emotional, and social benefits of a modified yoga practice for youth and young adults with complex trauma.

Higher education is a contentious space that poses challenges and barriers to the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. This study explores the motivational factors and opportunities to STEM fields among Native Hawaiian Pacific Islanders (NHPI). A qualitative method was used in this study, examining public archival data (e.g., videos, recordings, digital information, etc.) of self-identified NHPI scientists, scholar-activists, leaders, and their narratives of entering the STEM fields. Specifically, the portrayal of needs and promotion of NHPI representation and access were examined, including messages that inspire and encourage STEM interest among NHPI youth. EnCompass: Resources for Learning, an educational non-profit organization in Rochester NY, established in 2002, started providing targeted academic support to students through small group instruction, teaching study skills and executive functioning skills, test preparation, and after school programming through collaboration with the Rochester City School District and several local charter schools. Human attachment is one of the most critical factors in proper neurological and physiological development. Attachment is built through the mutuality of emotional impact, as well as the regular reception of physical touch. Behavioral health issues among youth and young adults are often misunderstood by the youth, and well as adults in the youth's life. Healthy Transitions provides a model for promoting youth-driven services, and leadership opportunities. These opportunities help shape recovery practices for youth with behavioral health issues, including mental illness, addiction, and co-occurring disorders. This provides a peer voice by which practitioners can better understand the impact of mental illness and addiction on youth, and initiate practice strategies that attune to the unique cultural identity of youth. The intended audience is anyone working with youth and young adults.

Sources of Strength is designed to provide both awareness and early prevention as well as to support intervention systems already in place. Although suicide prevention is the primary goal, this program has shown to reduce violence and bullying as well. Through the use of peer leaders, Sources of Strength empowers students to spread hope, help and strength messages utilizing the influence of friendship networks and positive norming.
