Science In The Studios: Communicating Science On Social Media Using On-Campus Resources, Danielle Airola M.A.
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Social media platforms offer powerful tools and spaces in which to communicate science to the general public. However, these platforms are equally available for the sharing and spread of pseudoscience and anti-science content. The widespread use of these platforms means an audience of people already exists who use social media as a source of news and information. The burden is on us as scientists and researchers to understand how to use these platforms. To aid in this process, the University of Montana’s Mansfield Library offers spaces in which to create content for social media that are free for us to …

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
In 2018, library faculty at a large, public land grant university formed a working group tasked with assessing the information needs of graduate students and implementing action plans to support this user population. From the beginning, the librarians recognized that graduate students are not a homogeneous group. Desiring a more nuanced understanding of these students, they held focus groups in 2019 to explore students’ experiences with navigating graduate school and, more specifically, the University library. One sub-group of particular interest to them was international graduate students, who make up a sizable percentage of the graduate student population on campus. International …

Anthropology On Social Media, Danielle Airola M.A.
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
In 2018, only about half of Americans (49%) agreed that “human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals,” and 38% that “the universe began with a big explosion” (Besley and Hill, 2020). These basic facts may be well understood by the scientific and academic communities, but how do we go about disseminating this sort of knowledge to the general public? What about more nuanced and detailed information that may affect people’s understanding of our human heritage or health? Social media has great potential for increasing the reach and broadening the understanding of individuals. However, it …
Sunrise In The Heartland: The Ahmadiyya Movement And African American Islamic Revival, Hazel F. Videon
Sunrise In The Heartland: The Ahmadiyya Movement And African American Islamic Revival, Hazel F. Videon
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
During the 1920s, an immigrant missionary from colonial India named Muhammad Sadiq established headquarters in Chicago and Detroit for a branch of Islam called the Ahmadiyya movement. During the interwar period, the Ahmadiyya movement became the first institutional expression of Islam in North America. It was especially influential in attracting African American converts through anti-racist messages and its connection to Black Nationalist, Pan-Islamist, and Pan-Africanist groups and ideologies. This project argues that the Ahmadiyya movement developed a “conversion rhetoric” aimed at African Americans that emphasized Islam as a connection to ancestral practice and a means toward liberation. Later African American …

Catholic Seminaries In Italy And Vietnam, Emma Mitchell
Catholic Seminaries In Italy And Vietnam, Emma Mitchell
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The Ricci Program invites students to compare "East and West" in a year-long research project in which they examine Italy and Vietnam in a topic of their choosing. This project examines the development and current operation of Catholic seminaries, hoping to offer new insights by presenting a comparison that has not been previously examined. Specifically, there is an examination of how different environments and challenges may present difference obstacles or opportunities for the potential reform of seminaries that many in the Catholic world call for today.
This project is a religious studies student's first attempt at a research project, and …

Collaborating with your campus teaching and learning center is a key way to center the library at the heart of conversations on creative pedagogy and student learning. Librarians at a small college library will share how their collaboration has enabled their information literacy program to ripple across campus – expanding their teaching practice beyond the usual one-shot and shifting faculty perceptions of librarians as classroom partners. The presenters will describe how they have contributed their expertise to teaching center programming and administered a series of center-funded faculty grants for information literacy, digital literacy, and teaching with archival materials.

"Not a Simple Matter: Rejecting Materialism as a Solution to the Mind-Body Problem"
By Andrew Coyle
Mentored by Dr. Steve Parchment and Dr. Minh Nguyen
Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies Many scholars accept materialism as an adequate solution to the mind-body problem. However, acceptance of materialism creates more problems than it purports to solve. This poster provides a background to the mind-body problem. This poster explores materialism as a potential solution to the mind-body problem. After reviewing materialism, it is rejected as an adequate solution to the mind-body problem. The poster concludes by positing property dualism as an …

Doing Local History Of An African-American Church Community: Chackbay’S Little Zion, Tina Granger
Doing Local History Of An African-American Church Community: Chackbay’S Little Zion, Tina Granger
Academic Summit
Students in a variety of Nicholls sociology classes gained genealogical and oral-history skills as part of service learning projects working toward a brochure on the history of an iconic local African-American church founded by former slaves. The brochure will contain both the history of the Mt. Zion Church and a more general discussion of the customs, rites, norms, and burial practices of early, southern African-American churches. Students kept journals and wrote reflective papers on their work in the course. This project extends work discussed at a previous ULS Service-Learning conference.

Showcasing Student, Faculty, And Campus Publications In A Small Liberal Arts College Institutional Repository, Janet Sietmann
Library Technology Conference
Institutional Repositories (IRs) offer a place to showcase student, faculty and staff scholarship. In addition, they provide an opportunity to have campus-wide discussions about many topics related to scholarly publishing.
In this presentation I will share Macalester’s experience in planning the IR, beginning with the need to provide open access for student honors projects, and I will highlight the expansion of our collections to include student award winning papers, PowerPoint presentations, and transcripts of college oral histories. I will tell how our efforts to populate our IR led to new opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty. And I will share …

The Question Of The Meaning Of Religion: As Belonging-To Being-Human, Angus Brook
The Question Of The Meaning Of Religion: As Belonging-To Being-Human, Angus Brook
Theology Conference Papers
If the ‘studies in religion’ are to be reinvented, we should ask: what foundation for this reinvention? or What foundation is appropriate for this particular historical horizon? This paper will take one stance towards this issue of foundation – in relation to the question of the meaning of Religion as a notion.
I take this theme of reinvention to be an opportunity to pose the question of the meaning of Religion as foundational in three ways: as the foundational concept of the study of religion, as the question of the methodological foundation of studies in religion, and finally, the question …
