From Burnout To Belonging: Reintroducing Joy Through Collaborative Library Culture Change, Jason D. Phillips, Chereeka Garner, Cindy Dancel
From Burnout To Belonging: Reintroducing Joy Through Collaborative Library Culture Change, Jason D. Phillips, Chereeka Garner, Cindy Dancel
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Libraries are often expected to create joy for others, yet many library workers continue to experience burnout, dissatisfaction, and disconnection. This session explores how one academic library implemented a staff-led, administration-supported approach to rebuilding workplace culture through collective, low-cost, and capacity-aware strategies. Centered on the work of an internal advisory group, this model creates structured opportunities for feedback, collaboration, and shared decision-making while introducing small, intentional interventions that foster connection, recognition, and belonging. Rather than relying on individual resilience or one-time morale boosts, this approach emphasizes sustainable, iterative practices that respond to staff needs and organizational realities. Attendees will leave …

Using Environmental Scans To Help Direct And Sustain Local Best Practices, Emily Lapworth, Carol Kussmann
Joseph P. Healey Library Publications
The digital landscape is in a state of constant change, and there is no one-size-fits-all formula for managing your digital assets, so understanding your local context is crucial to planning an effective digital stewardship strategy. Whether you are just starting out or have been at the same institution for 10 years, conducting an environmental scan can help. What are the internal and external changes you need to manage? What kind of stuff are you dealing with, and who are the stakeholders? Where is it located, and what systems are you using? What tools are available, and how have best practices …

Empowering Staff Wellbeing: A Team-Based Qi Initiative, Rebecca Lauren Smith, Elizabeth Morse, David Phillippi
SPARK Symposium Presentations
Project Title: Empowering Staff Wellbeing: A Team-Based QI Initiative
Keywords: Burnout, wellbeing, DNP, primary care, QI methodology
Background and Rationale: The consequences of burnout in healthcare are alarming: worse patient outcomes, lack of continuity of care, higher turnover, and increased cost to employers. Many studies of burnout and wellbeing of clinicians focus on larger institutions such as hospitals and Federally Qualified Health Centers. Over the past several years, burnout has been discussed among our small, eight-person clinician team working in a small, non-profit primary care clinic. Yet, there has been no formal assessment of the level of burnout among …

Examining The Effects Of Leadership-Fostered Organizational Priorities On Employee Mental Health, Lauren Cornelio
Thinking Matters Symposium
This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge by addressing the gap in the current literature regarding how organizational priorities enacted by a leader foster a work environment that can impact the mental health of employees. Utilizing a qualitative research design grounded in phenomenology, this study explores employees’ subjective experiences within different organizational cultures. By adopting a phenomenological approach, the study uncovers nuanced insights into employees’ lived experiences, shedding light on the intricate interplay between organizational priorities determined by the leader and employee mental health. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, allowing participants to reflect upon their perceptions of …

The Benefits Of Family Presence During Resuscitation, Abigail Harris, Payton Hale, Audrey Jeziorski
The Benefits Of Family Presence During Resuscitation, Abigail Harris, Payton Hale, Audrey Jeziorski
Scholars Week
The research provided analyzes the benefits and fears concerning Family Presence During Resuscitation (FPDR) as a standard practice in healthcare facilities. Evidence is available that FPDR supports increased familial satisfaction and psychological outcomes as well as benefits to the patient and healthcare team involved in resuscitation efforts, however this practice is not consistently implemented in healthcare facilities. Three main studies were analyzed throughout this research in order to determine the causation of inconsistent and absent policies regarding FPDR. The analysis of these studies determined that there is a lack of guidelines, education, and policies resulting in absence of family members …

Post Secondary Leadership: Promoting Leadership Development In Average Achieving Students, Deborah J. Clair
Research Days
This proposed research seeks to explore the intersection of leadership and average-achieving high school students. Specifically, the study aims to shed light on the experiences of adults who were once perceived as average-achieving high school students but possessed innate talents and abilities that were overlooked and excluded from leadership opportunities during their time in high school. Despite facing deficit thinking by school administration due to their grades, these individuals went on to become successful leaders in their careers. While there have been anecdotal claims and media coverage of the success of average-achieving students, there has been limited formal research conducted …

Care And Accountability In Library Leadership, Annie Bélanger, Kat Bell, Maisha Carey, Jon Jeffryes, Meghan Musolff
Presentations
Leaders and managers have an outsized impact on workers’ wellbeing. In facing the reality of constant and unpredictable change, leaders and managers need to consider the humanity of their employees as part of their commitment to equity. We suggest that library leaders and managers need to consider human-centered approaches as part of their leadership toolkit. Human-centered leaders have a strong focus on people and the organizational culture. They layer compassion and empathy in taking actions to fulfill the organization's mission.
We acknowledge that there are situations when taking a human-centered approach to the needs of library employees can feel in …

“Here’S A Free Textbook Substitute For The Class”: A Qualitative Case Study Exploring The Experiences And Perceptions Of International Undergraduate Students Toward Oers In College, Eunice Nkansah
Open Access Conference
International undergraduate students (IUS) are a diverse and unique population who differ markedly with respect to nationality, race, ethnicity, cultural norms and customs, physical appearance, and linguistic background. These students represent varying cultures and possess unique perspectives that are highly essential to classroom discussions and engagement. However, despite increasing recruitment efforts of higher education institutions towards IUS enrollment, there seems to be a limited emphasis on their engagement and inclusion beyond recruitment. In addressing this problem, higher education institution and its faculty must first embrace IUS inclusion as an intersectional proposition that includes all aspects of the international student’s background, …

“When You Know Better You Do Better”: A Biographical Case Study Exploring The Experiences Of A Former White Student In A Predominately White School District, Shanique D. Coombs
Open Access Conference
The eurocentric curriculum has been limiting students’ funds of knowledge for years; widespread knowledge taught in schools causes hidden and null curricula to remain pervasive. This study explored the educational experiences of a former White student by conducting an interview, teacher observation, and document analysis to gain her perspectives on being educated in a predominantly White school district. These findings reflect racial colorblindness, culture shock, and co-conspiratorship. This study highlights the need for a multicultural curriculum in non-urban school settings and teacher development for culturally responsive teaching to deconstruct Eurocentric curriculum and infiltrate culturally responsive pedagogies in primarily White school …

Holding Space For Voice: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Gorecki
Presentations
Change management is often process-centered instead of people-centered. People are centered when we focus on what is good. Appreciative Inquiry’s strengths-based, positive approach to organizational change allows leaders and facilitators to re-center individuals’ voices.
Appreciative Inquiry helps people move toward a shared vision for the future by engaging others in considering what is good, what could be, what should be, and how to co-create the future. It can foster equitable processes that decenter whiteness and deficit-mindset. Powerful conversations connect thoughts and feelings, result in new ideas, develop new perspectives and understandings, and have an increased potential for action. Developing conversations …

Antibiotic Stewardship For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Long-Term Care, Laura Giovannoli
Antibiotic Stewardship For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Long-Term Care, Laura Giovannoli
Academic Festival
Evidence review supports the need for a nursing decision-making aid to assist frontline nurses in identifying urinary tract infections versus asymptomatic bacteriuria for patients in long-term care. Findings in studies by Pulia et al. (2018) and Doernberg et al. (2015) concur regarding the high rate of inappropriate antibiotic treatment for misdiagnosed UTIs and the need for improved antibiotic stewardship. This DNP project addresses the problem of inappropriate antibiotic use and antimicrobial stewardship in patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria in the long-term care setting. The decision-making tool used was the Suspected UTI SBAR form which follows McGeer criteria (Stone et al., 2012) …

The goal of this research was to gain insight on …
Organizational Power And Organizational Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment: The Effects On Bystanders In The Military, Matthew Mcconnell
Organizational Power And Organizational Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment: The Effects On Bystanders In The Military, Matthew Mcconnell
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Sexual harassment and its negative effects have become a severe problem in the military. According to a RAND Military Workplace Study (2014), in a year an estimate 116,600 members reported being sexually harassed. Though critically important, most research to date has focused on the victims of sexual harassment to the exclusion of examining the effect of sexual harassment on those people observing the harassment. This study will focus on reviewing the consequences of observing sexual harassments on bystander emotional well-being and their attitudes and behavioral tendencies toward the organization. We will particularly focus on the influence of sexual harassment occurring …

Using Experiential Learning In Course Curriculum: The Case Of A Core Engineering Graphics Course, Martha Marie Snyder, Manuel Salinas, Molly J. Scanlon
CCAC Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
This work-in-progress paper overviews how an experiential education program was established at a private, non-profit university in the southeast, describes the process for certifying experiential courses using a formal course review process and qualification rubric, and details the case of a freshman engineering graphics course.
Grounded in the early works of Dewey, Lewin, and Piaget, experiential learning theory has become increasingly popular in higher education. Experiential learning serves as a foundation for lifelong learning and the development of the whole self as a citizen, family member and human being (Kolb, 2015). Austin and Rust (2015) define experiential learning as “‘hands-on’ …
