Epsilon Sigma at-Large Research Conference
Purpose: Historically, nurses have been at the bedside simply following the direction of physicians, but much has changed since then.
Aims: The purpose of this study is to examine how the roles of nurses have changed over the decades, from pre-professional caregiving to advanced practice. This study focuses on the birth of nursing as a profession, the direct experiences of nurses from different generations, the shift in physician-directed care to collaborative care, how nurses interpret the impact of major healthcare transformations on their role, and the emergence and development of the nurse practitioner role.
Methods: The study was conducted using …
Future Critical Habitat For The Roseate Spoonbill In Florida: A Probabilistic Habitat Suitability Model Based On County Population Growth And Existing Spoonbill Sightings, Ria R. Reynolds
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Historically, studies surrounding future conservation practices for the roseate spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) have been scarce, instead focusing on ecosystem/community based spatial analyses. The roseate spoonbill has long acted as both a flagship species for conservation and ecotourism and an indicator species of wetland health. However, the lack of focus on this species in research only aids in the disjointed classification of their vulnerability levels – the IUCN Red List labeling them as a species of least concern while the Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment describes them as highly vulnerable with the lowest capacity to adapt. An individualized assessment of the roseate …

Liberatory Librarianship - Authors@Eiu Book Talk, Brian W. Keith, Laurie N. Taylor
Liberatory Librarianship - Authors@Eiu Book Talk, Brian W. Keith, Laurie N. Taylor
All Faculty Scholarship
In Liberatory Librarianship: Stories of Community, Connection, and Justice, Brian Keith, Laurie Taylor, and Shamin Renwick explore how librarianship can be a vehicle for empowerment, equity, and social justice. In this Authors@EIU talk, Brian Keith and Laurie Taylor share the inspiration, process, and key ideas behind the book, including how their work with the Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) shaped their thinking about uncolonized, community-driven models for digital libraries. Drawing from examples across cultural heritage institutions, the speakers trace how traditional archives have often perpetuated colonial power structures, and how liberatory librarianship proposes a forward-looking alternative that centers …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025
The Parramore Speaks project is an initiative hosted by the UCF Public History Department designed to give agency back to the resident’s of Parramore by putting the preservation of their history back into their hands. Through a collaborated with the City of Orlando, RICHES and the PHC Internship, I had the unique opportunity to be a part of a team dedicated to preserving and sharing the endangered local histories of communities located here in Central Florida. I worked personally with the oral interviews and transcriptions for individuals such as Reggie McGill, Alzo J. Reddick, Walter Hawkins and Paul Perkins, tirelessly …

Time For Radical Action: The Black Grassroots Freedom Struggle In America's Second City In The Mid-1960s, Stephen Vincent Hayes
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The traditional narrative of the civil rights movement focuses on the South, the influential rights organizations that drew national attention, and the men who led these organizations. It also presupposes nonviolence as the central organizing principle. Consequently, this narrative often ignores important actions and actors that fall outside this limited purview, and our understanding of the movement suffers as a result. My research adds nuance and granular detail to the broad Black freedom struggle. I embarked on a “local studies” examination of Chicago and have investigated two topics: school segregation and housing segregation.
I reached several interpretive conclusions about Chicago. …

Yummy Advertising? A Look At The Sexualization Of Food Advertisements, Mackenzie Cook
Yummy Advertising? A Look At The Sexualization Of Food Advertisements, Mackenzie Cook
Scholars Week
This content analysis was to further research in looking how sexuality is used in advertising, but particularly food advertisements. More specifically, words and phrases used, advertising characters, how they are presented and posed, etc. Using a combination of 15 Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s ads, these were analyzed to find consistent themes for advertising tactics. Findings show that sexual innuendos in advertisement phrasing are often used, as well as female characters. It also showed that these characters were often scantily clad or close to nude, making them have more “sex appeal” for the male audience. Facial expressions and posing were also …

Access To Humanities Scholarship Through Public Search Engines, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey
Libraries
While research has shown search engine coverage of science and social science scholarship rivals traditional library databases, the coverage or utility of public search engines for the humanities needs further exploration. This presentation will report results from at least two empirical research studies that investigated access to humanities scholarship via public search engines (e.g. Google, Google Scholar, Google Books, Microsoft Academic). We will propose additional research ideas that we hope will inspire future studies.
British Family Structure: Expressions Of Power And Conceptions Of Family, Chloe Chaplin, Kathy Callahan Dr.
British Family Structure: Expressions Of Power And Conceptions Of Family, Chloe Chaplin, Kathy Callahan Dr.
Posters-at-the-Capitol
The goal of this research is to examine family structure in early modern Scotland and England though the use of written communication. The primary focus will be on aristocratic families with a secondary look at upper-middle class families. This is due primarily to availability of records, and also why I will mainly be using written correspondence rather than secondary analyses, as this field is still relatively new. By exploring the development of key familial relationships (e.g. parent-child, husband-wife, and in-law interactions) through private correspondence, larger insights can be drawn about gender and the nuclear family. Also, these central relationships guide …

Waltrene Willis: A Montana Suffragist, Chloe F. Loeffelholz
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
I will investigate the club and suffrage work of Waltrene Willis, a resident of Thomson Falls, Glasgow and Garfield Montana between 1900 and 1920, who worked as the recording secretary for the Montana Equal Suffrage State Central Committee. I conducted research in federal census records, publications of the Glasgow Courier and The Suffrage Daily News, and the contemporary publication of the Montana Woman. My research on Waltrene Willis illustrates the range of activities that were conducted by Progressive-era women in Montana. Involved in everything from the Sunflower Art Club to Glasgow’s Political Equality League, Willis’s career serves as …
