Granting Rights To Nature: Environmental Personhood In The U.S. And Worldwide, Daxton W. Summers Apr 2025

Granting Rights To Nature: Environmental Personhood In The U.S. And Worldwide, Daxton W. Summers

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

This project explores the concept of granting legal personhood to natural environments, with a focus on the Clark Fork River in Missoula, Montana. Granting legal personhood rights to the environment has been used around the world to recognize and protect rivers, mountains, and other environmental entities. However, the U.S. legal systems have been slow to adopt this approach. This research essay examines why the U.S. has been lagging, analyzes foreign legal frameworks that have granted personhood to environmental entities and examines if any could be adapted to grant rights and protections to the Clark Fork River.

The research process involves …

Rooted In Resistance, Growing In Boriken: The Fight For Climate And Agricultural Justice In Puerto Rico, Jada Melendez Jan 2025

Rooted In Resistance, Growing In Boriken: The Fight For Climate And Agricultural Justice In Puerto Rico, Jada Melendez

LEAD Scholars Academy Showcase

This project examines how Puerto Rico’s agricultural system has been shaped by historical colonization, economic policy, and climate change. Once largely self-sustaining, the island now imports more than 85 percent of its food, creating major vulnerabilities during natural disasters and economic disruptions. My research analyzes four key systems of injustice political, economic, social, and environmental and how they intersect to impact food sovereignty. The project also highlights grassroots solutions such as agroecology education, land protection, and investment in sustainable infrastructure. Through this work, I developed a deeper understanding of how colonial legacies continue to affect food systems today and how …

Exploring The Relationship Between Microplastics And Neurotoxicity, John Stathopoulos Jun 2024

Exploring The Relationship Between Microplastics And Neurotoxicity, John Stathopoulos

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This presentation will look at the relationship between microplastics and neurotoxicity, focusing on the limits of our current knowledge. Despite being an especially relevant topic of conversation in the realms of environmental and public health, little is known about the effects that microplastics have on the brain. As a neuroscience student with interests in medicine, neurodegeneration, and public health, I found the lack of research shocking. Throughout this semester, I looked at primary research and news articles to explore the extent of our knowledge and limits of current microplastic research, as well as their potential neurotoxic effects and future steps.

Dispossession Of Ancestral Land: Effect Of Displacement On Indigenous Peoples' Life Satifaction, Kaitlyn Bird, Hailey Shangin, Alana Smutz, Julisa Lopez, Adam Farero, Stephanie Fryberg Apr 2024

Dispossession Of Ancestral Land: Effect Of Displacement On Indigenous Peoples' Life Satifaction, Kaitlyn Bird, Hailey Shangin, Alana Smutz, Julisa Lopez, Adam Farero, Stephanie Fryberg

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

North America's history of forced displacement and relocation of Indigenous tribes continues to affect contemporary Indigenous peoples (Wolfe, 2006). As climate change, socioeconomic disparities, and industry encroachment shape displacement, Indigenous people continue to be negatively impacted (Covey, 2021). The current work explores how displacement impacts life satisfaction for Indigenous Peoples, and whether cultural embeddedness modifies this relationship. Using the Indigenous Climate Justice survey (N=282), regression analysis illustrates that those who have not been displaced generally report higher life satisfaction than those who have been displaced (β=-0.255, SE= 0.108 p= 0.019). Lower reported life satisfaction is especially prevalent when those displaced …

Supporting Mental Health For Students Experiencing Climate Anxiety And Environmental Racism, Hunter Robbins, Hanan Abdillahi, Valeria Monreal, Stephanie Black, Selena Lynch

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

There has been growing discourse on climate anxiety and environmental racism. Minorities are disproportionately affected by climate change and we recognize the impacts that climate anxiety has on these populations. Our mission is to ensure every student feels supported in the advent of the climate crisis. We did so by inventorying resources at Loyola, building community engagement with these topics through surveys and interviews, and offering recommendations to faculty, staff, and administrators for how they can better support their students. We hope to persuade Loyola to offer more information and expand on resources for climate anxiety and environmental racism.

Preparing The Younger Generation For A Better Future With Wildfire, Elizabeth Riddle, Rory Mclaverty, Katherine Wendeln, Lillian Hollibaugh, Mackenzie Weiland, Aubrey Frissell Apr 2023

Preparing The Younger Generation For A Better Future With Wildfire, Elizabeth Riddle, Rory Mclaverty, Katherine Wendeln, Lillian Hollibaugh, Mackenzie Weiland, Aubrey Frissell

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The frequency and severity of wildfires have increased around the world within the last two decades due to shifts in land management practices, climate change, and other factors. The effects of these fires have led to an inaccurate public perception of wildfire as a whole. This overly-simplified, vilified perception of wildfire obscures the role that it has played in shaping landscapes for thousands of years, and how indigenous peoples have applied fire to take care of landscapes.

We sought to empower future generations to better coexist with wildfire by changing this public perception through a children’s book. Over the course …

There Is No Planet B: Lessons From My Experience With Sustainability Planning, Elani G. Borhegyi Apr 2022

There Is No Planet B: Lessons From My Experience With Sustainability Planning, Elani G. Borhegyi

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The development of plans directed at sustainability is crucial to greening institutions, holding parties accountable, and promoting justice. The process of forming such plans is complex and interdisciplinary, as I have experienced as a student working on the University of Montana (UM) Sustainability Action Plan (SAP). Since working on the UM SAP, I have learned many lessons that demonstrate the importance and impact of sustainability planning that are worth sharing with a wider audience to motivate participation in sustainability.

Work on the SAP began in summer 2021 with student-led research on strategies to make the UM more sustainable. In fall …

The Impact Of Urban Green Space On Mental Health, Jana Rokitta Apr 2022

The Impact Of Urban Green Space On Mental Health, Jana Rokitta

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

As an Environmental Studies and Psychology double major, I'm curious about how environmental factors, especially in the urban setting influence psychological constructs. During my research, I focused on urban stressors and their effect on mental health. While analyzing a case study, I looked at how urban green space can benefit mental health. Lastly, I focused on the implication of the studies for Chicago and how the uneven access to urban green space poses a social justice issue in Chicago and on a global scale. Additionally, my research includes a critical view of confounding variables that might have impacted the results.

Cook County Community Survey, Keyla Navarrete, Juanita Vivas Bastidas

Graduate Research Symposium

In our collaborative project with Dr. Dana Garbarski, [sociology department], and Dr. Doherty [political-science department], we created a cross-sectional online survey of a descriptively representative sample of 2,250 adults in Cook County. The survey, which uses zip codes to geocode findings, focuses on seven topics relevant to county residents: gentrification, environmental conditions, politics, political efficacy, policing, and COVID-19. In terms of demographics, it includes questions regarding gender, race, education, homeownership, among others. Juanita and Keyla developed the survey’s environmental conditions and policing topics, respectively, with faculty experts’ guidance. Besides Dr. Garbarski and Dr. Doherty, Juanita worked with Dr. Akchurin, [sociology …

The Importance Of Statistical Design In Spatial Analysis: Indiana Superfund Site Locations And Socioeconomic Variables, Jenna Johnston, Cecilia Hall Oct 2019

The Importance Of Statistical Design In Spatial Analysis: Indiana Superfund Site Locations And Socioeconomic Variables, Jenna Johnston, Cecilia Hall

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Environmental justice research has focused on the question of whether marginalized people are more likely to live close to polluted sites. These spatial disparities have been found when analyzing the distribution of Superfund sites with race and socioeconomic status. However, these results appear to be dependent on what methods and units of analysis are used. This study examines whether these disparities exist in Indiana by comparing the results of two different statistical tests: a t-test and bootstrapping analysis.

Using t-tests to compare median income in areas close to and far from Superfund sites at distances of 1 and 5 miles …

The Dynamic And Diverse Scholarly Information Landscape: What's Next?, Theresa Borchert, Virginia Connell Mar 2019

The Dynamic And Diverse Scholarly Information Landscape: What's Next?, Theresa Borchert, Virginia Connell

Library Technology Conference

We believe that there have been recent fundamental changes in how faculty gather scholarly information, collaborate with others, and teach students. We created a faculty survey to discover how these trends are changing, how they affect access delivery, and how they might impact our teaching at a small liberal arts college. Considering these changes, are the tools we pay for and use in libraries still cost effective? If we believe scaffolding information literacy instruction is important, how should we bring students through our education systems and beyond? These are the kinds of questions we had about faculty research trends. We …
