My research used data available in the public domain to establish racial/ethnic inequality in pay and rank in the Social Science faculty and the Medical School in a university in Southwestern Ontario. I specifically focused on the faculty of Social Science and Medicine and Dentistry School as they are among the biggest faculties on campus. I retrieved faculty information from information available to the public and used this to determine salary, race, gender, rank, and tenure status (if applicable). Visible minorities were paid lower in the faculty of Social Science compared to their white counterparts. However, in the Medical School, …

Pediatric opioid-related poisoning and deaths have increased by 268% between 1999 and 2016. One risk factor for these poisonings may be receiving an opioid prescription at a young age. Given the established link between legitimate opioid prescriptions and later misuse in young adulthood, research focused on identifying relationships between sociodemographic factors with opioid and non-opioid prescribing is needed to understand opioid prescribing inconsistencies and promote safe pain management. Of interest, this study examined the association between race/ethnicity and health insurance payer type with pediatric opioid and non-opioid ordering in an inpatient hospital setting. El-Nawawy and El-Masry (2017) argue that media “devalue black lives” and “race, then, cannot be ignored as a factor” when considering the media and political treatment of terrorism’s victims (2017, 1810). Furthermore, media give less coverage to victims of terrorism in attacks occurring in countries outside the Global North (Nevalsky 2015). In this paper, we theorize race and terrorism along with gender. We discuss the ways that scholarship, media, and political actors give (or do not give) attention to victims of terrorism. A review of research on talking about race in the college classroom revealed that scholars have focused on identifying students’ struggles and considering the impact of intense discussions have on students. Specifically, Miller and Harris (2005) found that White students struggled with feeling that their opinion on racial issues mattered and with learning to accept their privilege, and Sue et al. (2009) found that Black students struggled to feel understood and with the pressures they felt were placed on them by students and instructors. Previous research suggests that implicit biases often present themselves out of conscious awareness in actions, behaviors, feelings, and emotions (Dovidio, Kawakami, & Gaertner, 2002; Swim, Aikin, Hall & Hunter, 1995). The present research is an observational study that seeks to investigate these biases by examining cues present in nonverbal behavior. This study will specifically focus on bias surrounding gender and race and will use the distance that individuals stand apart from one another in various lines in public places to do so. Does critical whiteness studies have anything to offer to interrogations of race and racism in academic librarianship? This presentation provides an introduction to critical whiteness studies, outlining its origins, major questions, and debates. LIS scholarship that has incorporated elements of this framework will be highlighted, followed by a discussion of the criticisms of and contradictions within critical whiteness studies. The presenter will conclude by suggesting strategies for addressing these limitations while remaining committed to exposing whiteness and white supremacy at work in academic librarianship.

Important to understanding the complex workings of race in LIS is an investigation of the ways in which it has been shaped by gender. A field dominated by white women, tracing the role that the white female body played in early librarianship can illuminate today’s demographic makeup. Calling on the Lady Bountiful archetype, this presentation interrogates the ways in which patriarchy, racism, and notions of femininity have and continue to work in LIS education and practice.

This lesson is part of evolution unit which follows heredity and genetics

The lesson is interdisciplinary in nature in that I discuss the concept of race as a social construct and the idea that there are “black, white, red, yellow” skinned people is something that people developed. It is not based on biology. Race groupings are human-made groups.

Students first learn about mixing light and how to determine black and white from an ADI analysis. They learn that red and green = yellow, etc.

They then photograph each other’s forearms and analyze the images using ADI.
