Maintaining and providing access to collections can be challenging. Doing this at a distance is more challenging. Doing this at a distance during a period of major transition and controlled chaos is a herculean task. In July 2010, the state-mandated merger of the College of Eastern Utah (a two-year community college) with Utah State University (200 miles distant) became official. Well before this date, staff at both libraries began to deal with the complex issues involved with maintaining stable access to the collections of the College of Eastern Utah libraries. The changing situation required implementing a wide spectrum of solutions. …

Librarians from Utah State University explain recent efforts to encourage subject librarians to take a more holistic view of their roles. We are shifting from a traditional emphasis primarily on collection development and refocusing on natural connections between collections, instruction, liaison, and reference service. The poster provides background about Utah State University’s situation and explains our approach to analyzing local needs and culture to inform development of a new organizational structure. Copyright law does not change often; the technology that allows us to use copyrighted works changes all the time. Faculty often assume fair use covers all use of copyrighted material in their classes (both face to face and online) and they become confused and frustrated when they learn of limitations in the electronic environment. Students rarely think about copyright; they are generally unaware of how their actions might infringe the rights of copyright holders or that they themselves might hold these rights in their own works. This presentation offers a brief general introduction to libraries in Sweden and looks in particular at two university libraries in the city of Umeå. It was presented at the 2006 NRIC (Natural Resources Information Council) conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Spoken comments from the presentation are found in the notes section for each slide.
