No Evidence Of Immune Priming In Bumble Bee Hosts Against Novel Exposure To A Honey Bee Virus, Austin Calhoun, Ben M. Sadd Jan 2025

No Evidence Of Immune Priming In Bumble Bee Hosts Against Novel Exposure To A Honey Bee Virus, Austin Calhoun, Ben M. Sadd

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Ongoing global change presents novel challenges to species persistence, including heightened emerging infectious diseases (EID) exposure. While invertebrates lack vertebrate acquired immunity, many species exhibit “immune priming” with enhanced protection to repeated pathogen exposures. This phenomenon could be critical for species of conservation concern, such as for wild bumble bees, where EID risk is amplified through contact with managed bee pollinators. We investigate the potential for immune priming against the honey bee-derived Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV) in Bombus impatiens bumble bees. We test the hypothesis that prior pathogen-associated exposure affords greater resistance and tolerance upon secondary pathogen exposure, due …

2024 Beyond Lectures Micro-Immune Battles Evaluation. Project Dataset., Michael Dillon, James Edwards, Alexandra Hughes, Holly Stephenson

Faculty of Health Datasets

Teaching the complex interactions between hosts and pathogens is a fundamental yet pedagogically challenging aspect of medical education. The intricate mechanisms of the immune system can pose significant barriers to students’ understanding of infectious disease diagnosis and treatment. To address this, we used a digital whiteboard platform to design a card-based competitive game called Micro-Immune Battles, aimed at more actively engaging students with microbiology and immunology concepts. Dataset Description: This dataset consists of an Excel spreadsheet that collates anonymised qualitative and quantitative survey responses evaluating the Micro-immune battles game. The spreadsheet contains two tabs corresponding to two separate surveys: (1) …

A Proposal To Facilitate Nhs Personnel To Recognise And Use New Learning Gained On A Global Health Experience, On Their Return To The Nhs. Project Dataset., Michael Dillon, Alice Inman, Lucy Spowart, Louise Hardy

Faculty of Health Datasets

Significant learning occurs by health professionals during global health experiences overseas. However, volunteers struggle to recognise and use the new skills on return to the NHS. Through action research methodology, a team at the University of Plymouth designed, delivered, and evaluated a series of bespoke online workshops to support NHS professionals recognise and use their new skills on return. Dataset Description: This dataset consists of an Excel spreadsheet that collates anonymised qualitative and quantitative survey responses. The spreadsheet contains three tabs corresponding to three separate surveys: (1) Participant demographic information (2) Participant pre-workshop response data (3) Participant post-workshop response data …

Cytokine Data For Cytokine Profile Assessment From Peruvian Pinniped (Arctocephalus Australis And Otaria Byronia) Plasma, Mykenzee Munaco, Milton Levin, Michael Adkesson, Susana Cárdenas-Alayzad, Dimitrios G. Giarikos, Amy C. Hirons

SECLER Data

Large colonies of two vulnerable, sympatric pinniped species, Peruvian fur seals (Arctocephalus australis Peruvian subpopulation; PFS) and South American sea lions (Otaria byronia; SASL), reside and reproduce in Punta San Juan, Peru (PSJ) where they are exposed to stressors such as contaminants and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. The use of cytokines as immune biomarkers can be indicative of an animal’s health and function by allowing for the assessment of an individual's cytokine balance as type I helper T cells (Th1) or type II helper T cells (Th2) dominant. Utilizing archived pinniped plasma samples from 2009-2019 …

Unspoken Rules Associated With Publication Success, Jamie Saragossi Feb 2021

Unspoken Rules Associated With Publication Success, Jamie Saragossi

University Libraries Research Data

Large publications, such as the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), wield significant influence over clinical practice across all medical specialties. To identify the initial NEJM publications’ characteristics that were associated with a future “significant author” NEJM publication. For this purpose, first, second, and senior author ranks were defined as “significant author” roles.

METHODS: From 2002 – 2019, Medline NEJM original research articles containing a structured abstract were extracted; baseline study characteristics were evaluated as potential predictors of subsequent NEJM successful publication as significant author; the variables evaluated included the index publications’ co-author count, study design (e.g., clinical trial), grant …

  1. Metabolic costs associated with parasites should not be limited to established infections. Even during initial exposure to questing and attacking parasites, hosts can enact behavioural and physiological responses that could also incur metabolic costs. However, few studies have measured these costs directly. Hence, little is known about metabolic costs arising from parasite exposure.
  2. Further, no one has yet measured whether and how previous infection history modulates metabolic responses to parasite exposure.
  3. Here, using the California killifish (Fundulus parvipinnis) and its brain-infecting parasite (Euhaplorchis californiensis), we quantified how killifish metabolism, behaviour, and osmoregulatory phenotype changed upon acute …

Prove It! Me Report Pretty One Day., Erika Bennett, Sam Friedman

Library Technology Conference

Many luminaries argue that the library’s value is intangible, but that answer is unacceptable in today’s climate. The economy is tough. Budgets are tight. Meanwhile, all kinds of invested parties want you to prove that you are worth their money. And they want that proof in easily digestible numbers and graphs. Bottom line: organizations that show their value get funded.

This is a scary prospect for many librarians. Much like information research, data visualization is a complex process with a lot of interconnected steps. Luckily, librarians are already naturally attuned to data competencies such as analytical thinking, organizing and evidence-building. …
