The C. Elegans Heterochronic Gene Lin-4 Encodes Small Rnas With Antisense Complementarity To Lin-14, Rosalind Lee, Rhonda Feinbaum, Victor Ambros Dec 1993

The C. Elegans Heterochronic Gene Lin-4 Encodes Small Rnas With Antisense Complementarity To Lin-14, Rosalind Lee, Rhonda Feinbaum, Victor Ambros

Victor R. Ambros

lin-4 is essential for the normal temporal control of diverse postembryonic developmental events in C. elegans. lin-4 acts by negatively regulating the level of LIN-14 protein, creating a temporal decrease in LIN-14 protein starting in the first larval stage (L1). We have cloned the C. elegans lin-4 locus by chromosomal walking and transformation rescue. We used the C. elegans clone to isolate the gene from three other Caenorhabditis species; all four Caenorhabditis clones functionally rescue the lin-4 null allele of C. elegans. Comparison of the lin-4 genomic sequence from these four species and site-directed mutagenesis of potential open reading frames …

Domestic Monopoly, Quotas & Contestable Rents, William Rieber Sep 1993

Domestic Monopoly, Quotas & Contestable Rents, William Rieber

William Rieber

In this article, a specific example is given to illustrate that rent seeking can raise welfare under full seeking in general equilibrium: an import quota is levied in the presence of domestic monopoly in the import competing industry. An import quota is considered instead of an import tariff since a tariff confers no market power on the local monopolist. The monopolist still faces a perfectly elastic demand, corresponding now to the world price plus tariff. The introduction of monopoly does not add another distortion to the economy, which is necessary if full rent seeking is to be welfare improving. But …

A wide variety of macrocyclic tetrapyrrole compounds are synthesized by cells for use in diverse cellular processes. As shown in Fig. 1, this pathway includes the synthesis of closed tetrapyrrole compounds that contain metals, such as cobalt-containing cobalamin (vitamin B12), nickel-containing methanogenesis coenzyme F430, copper-containing pigment turacin, iron-containing heme and siroheme, and magnesium-containing chlorophylls and bacteriochlorophylls. Also synthesized by this pathway are a variety of open macrocyclic compounds such as the family of bilins that are used as a source of light-harvesting pigments in cyanobacteria, red algae, and cryptophytes as well as the chromophore that is covalently attached to phytochrome …

A Bacterial Protease Perturbs The Paracellular Barrier Function Of Transporting Epithelial Monolayers In Culture, Ali Azghani May 1993

A Bacterial Protease Perturbs The Paracellular Barrier Function Of Transporting Epithelial Monolayers In Culture, Ali Azghani

Ali Azghani

Tight junctions between cells and adhesion to the substratum maintain the barrier function of epithelia throughout the body. Damage to the epithelial barrier by microbial products allows penetration of bacteria and promotion of infection. We studied the effects of Pseudomonas elastase (PE) on the barrier function of epithelia by using Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) epithelial cells; these cells form tight junctions (zonula occludens [ZO]) in vitro. PE decreased electrical resistance across the monolayers in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Immunostaining of selected proteins of the ZO and zonula adherens was used to explore the effects of PE on junctional proteins. …

Avian Hatching Asynchrony: Brood Classification Based On Discriminant Function Analysis Of Nestling Masses, Given Harper, Steven A. Juliano, Charles F. Thompson May 1993

Avian Hatching Asynchrony: Brood Classification Based On Discriminant Function Analysis Of Nestling Masses, Given Harper, Steven A. Juliano, Charles F. Thompson

Given Harper

Studies of hatching asynchrony in altricial birds have used several methods to determine if a brood hatches synchronously or asynchronously. The most commonly used methods include making frequent nest visits during the time of hatching and using nestling mass or other measures of size on a given day to estimate nestling age or to describe the extent of the size hierarchy within broods. We made daily nest visits to determine if House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) broods hatched synchronously or asynchronously, and then compared classification of these broods based on discriminant function analysis with that based on mass differences of nestlings. …

Case Notes And Carting Of Bioethical Case Consultations, Benjamin Freedman, Charles Weijer, Eugene Bereza

Charles Weijer

In summary, the usual elements of a typical health care ethics consultation note might reasonably accommodate the needs and expectations of relevant parties, and would therefore include: 1. identification of the relevant ethical issues, questions, or dilemmas; 2. reference to any relevant facts--medical, nursing, social, psychological, spiritual, legal, political, etc.; 3. a prioritized list of recommendations to improve coordinated care; 4. a clear and concise articulation of relevant arguments, wtih specific reference to the list of recommendations as well as to the institution's overall ethos; 5. a contextual statement, identifying the perceived degree of consensus or support for the recommendations …

Diethylene Glycol Distearate (Dgd): A Versatile Embedding Medium For Retinal Cytochemistry, Jun C. Huang, Kristina Mieziewska, Nancy Philp, Theo Van Veen, Gustavo D. Aguirre

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

Embedment in diethylene glycol distearate (DGD) was shown to be highly desirable and versatile for retinal cytochemical studies, including in situ hybridization, immuno- andlectin cytochemistry. This method allows for preservation of fine tissue detail as well as good reaction sensitivity. It appears to be more suitable than most other methods currently used for light microscopic retinal cytochemistry.

Quantitative Determination Of Surface Excess By The Semiintegral Method, Susanne Dana, Mathew Jablonski, Mark Anderson Mar 1993

Quantitative Determination Of Surface Excess By The Semiintegral Method, Susanne Dana, Mathew Jablonski, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

In 1988 Bowling and McCreery reported that the semiintegral of voltammetric data provided an excellent method for the qualitative diagnosis of weak adsortpion of material upon an electrode. This report was important to electroanalytical chemistry because of the difficulty often encountered when trying to identify the presence of weakly adsorbed material and because of the impact that weak adsorption has upon voltammetric response. Many electrochemical analyses are dependent upon the evaluation of voltammetric wave shape, particularly kinetic analyses. Unlike strong adsorption, the presence of weakly adsorbed material does not dramatically and obviously perturb the shape of the voltammetric response; consequently, …

Application Of Square Wave Voltammetry For Electrochemical Detection In Gradient Elution Hplc, John Roush, Mark Anderson Dec 1992

Application Of Square Wave Voltammetry For Electrochemical Detection In Gradient Elution Hplc, John Roush, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

The utility of square-wave voltammetry with a conventionally sized indicator electrode for use in the detection of gradient elution HPLC applications is demonstrated. A redesigned electrochemical detector cell, based upon a type of wall-jet design, provides more efficient potential control and allows the voltammetric detection. The minimum detectable quantity and linear dynamic range for the new detector design were found to be 13pg and 5 orders of magnitude, respectively, comparable to other electrochemical detectors. In the separation of a test mixture containing hydroquinone. bromohydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol, and phenylhydroquinone baseline resolution of all five components is obtained in 12 minutes using …

Political Crime In Contemporary America: A Critical Approach, Kenneth Tunnell

Kenneth Tunnell

Nine essays explore not only politically motivated crimes against the state, but also harmful acts committed by the government, a category usually omitted in discussions of political crime. Among the topics are social relationships that can be considered criminal but are legal, debunking the "pro-life" agenda, the role of the state in violence against women, and hate crimes and the far right.

Physics Students' Understanding Of Relative Speed: A Phenomenographic Study, Eleanor Walsh, Gloria Dall'alba, John Bowden, Elaine Martin, Ference Marton, Geoff Masters, Paul Ramsden, Andrew Stephanou Dec 1992

Physics Students' Understanding Of Relative Speed: A Phenomenographic Study, Eleanor Walsh, Gloria Dall'alba, John Bowden, Elaine Martin, Ference Marton, Geoff Masters, Paul Ramsden, Andrew Stephanou

Prof Geoff Masters AO

It is important that students of physics develop both quantitative and qualitative understanding of physical concepts and principles. Although accuracy and reliability in solving quantitative problems is necessary, a qualitative understanding is required in applying concepts and principles to new problems and in real-life situations. If students are not able to understand what underlies quantitative problem-solving procedures nor interpret the solution in physical terms, it is questionable whether they have developed an adequate understanding of physics. The research reported here is part of a larger phenomenographic study that is concerned with the assessment of physics students' understanding of some basic …

Participation In Science Courses In Senior Secondary School, John Ainley Dec 1992

Participation In Science Courses In Senior Secondary School, John Ainley

Dr John Ainley

In previous research, participation in science studies in senior secondary school has been related to both background characteristics of students and to earlier achievements and interests. This paper reports an investigation of participation in combinations of subjects in senior secondary schools in Australia which embody different science orientations. It shows that different combinations of factors shape participation in physical science' and 'biological and other science' types of course. Both are favoured by investigative interest but participation in a physical science course type is strongly associated with high levels of earlier school achievement in numeracy and gender whereas participation in a …
