Micrornas: Tiny Regulators With Great Potential, Victor Ambros

Victor R. Ambros

Animal genomes contain an abundance of small genes that produce regulatory RNAs of about 22 nucleotides in length. These microRNAs are diverse in sequence and expression patterns, and are evolutionarily widespread, suggesting that they may participate in a wide range of genetic regulatory pathways.

Layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition of polyelectrolytes was used to modify a gold substrate with polydiallyl dimethylammonium chloride and an Ultem-type poly(amic acid) salt. Following deposition, heat treatment converted the poly(amic acid) salt into a polyimide. A decrease in the thin film thickness and a substantial increase in the interfacial contact angle accompanied thermal treatment. Results from cyclic voltammetry measurements also show that the imidized surface had a decreased dielectric constant relative to an unmodified or a poly(amic acid)-modified interface. Each of these results is consistent with formation of the polyimide. Infrared spectra of the thin films formed by the electrostatic deposition …

Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart Nov 2001

Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart

Jason A Snart

In his paper, "Entropy in Pynchon's 'Entropy' and Lefebvre's The Production of Space," Jason Snart examines Thomas Pynchon's short story "Entropy" for the ways in which it deals with the kinds of disorder(s) associated with entropy as a thermodynamic and informational concept. Those concepts are installed as a framework within which to consider cultural studies work like Henri Lefebfre's thought in his The Production of Space and Ludwig von Bertalanffy's general systems theory and themodynamics: disorder is rendered not as confusion, but rather as a state of potential energy and productivity and Lefebvre's and Bertalanffy's concepts serve to show how …

Dopamine Adsorption At Surface Modified Carbon-Fiber Electrodes, Bradley Bath, Heidi Martin, R. Mark Wightman, Mark Anderson Oct 2001

Dopamine Adsorption At Surface Modified Carbon-Fiber Electrodes, Bradley Bath, Heidi Martin, R. Mark Wightman, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry at high repetition rates was used to characterize adsorptive properties of dopamine (DA) at native and modified carbon-fiber microelectrode surfaces. Disk electrodes were fabricated from Thornel P55 fibers, and cylindrical electrodes, from Thornel T650 fibers. Their surfaces were modified by physisorption of 2,6-anthraquinone disulfonic acid (2,6-AQDS) or chemisorption of 4-carboxyphenyl or catechols. Chemisorption was accomplished via electrochemical reduction of diazonium salts. The degree of DA adsorption and its oxidation kinetics were found to vary for the two types of native carbon fiber electrodes and with the different chemical overlayers on the carbon surfaces. 2,6-AQDS measurably increased DA …

Concealed Pseudo-Clefts, Ileana Paul Sep 2001

Concealed Pseudo-Clefts, Ileana Paul

Ileana Paul

This paper argues for a pseudo-cleft analysis of so-called clefts in Malagasy. Evidence is presented that the clefted element is in fact the matrix (copular) predicate and that the pre-suppositional clause is a headless relative in subject position. The proposed pseudo-cleft structure accounts for the focus interpretation of this construction, due to the underlying presence of a definite description in the subject position.

Concentric Retinitis Pigmentosa: Clinicopathologic Correlations, Ann Milam, Elaine De Castro, Julie Smith, Wai-Xing Tang, Sinoj John, Michael Gorin, Edwin Stone, Gustavo Aguirre, Samuel Jacobson

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

Progressive concentric (centripetal) loss of vision is one pattern of visual field loss in retinitis pigmentosa. This study provides the first clinicopathologic correlations for this form of retinitis pigmentosa. A family with autosomal dominant concentric retinitis pigmentosa was examined clinically and with visual function tests. A post-mortem eye of an affected 94 year old family member was processed for histopathology and immunocytochemistry with retinal cell specific antibodies. Unrelated simplex/multiplex patients with concentric retinitis pigmentosa were also examined. Affected family members of the eye donor and patients from the other families had prominent peripheral pigmentary retinopathy with more normal appearing central …

Fine Mapping Of Canine Xlpra Establishes Homology Of The Human And Canine Rp3 Intervals, Qi Zhang, Gregory M. Acland, Barbara Zangerl, J. L. Johnson, Zuohua Mao, Caroline Zeiss, Elaine A. Ostrander, Gustavo D. Aguirre Sep 2001

Fine Mapping Of Canine Xlpra Establishes Homology Of The Human And Canine Rp3 Intervals, Qi Zhang, Gregory M. Acland, Barbara Zangerl, J. L. Johnson, Zuohua Mao, Caroline Zeiss, Elaine A. Ostrander, Gustavo D. Aguirre

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

Purpose: Canine X-linked progressive retinal atrophy (XLPRA) is a hereditary, progressive retinal degeneration that has been mapped previously to the canine X chromosome in a region flanked by the dystrophin (DMD) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP1) genes, and is tightly linked to the gene RPGR. The comparable region of the human X chromosome includes the disease locus for RP3, an X-linked form of retinitis pigmentosa, although the current canine disease interval is much larger.
Methods: To refine the map of the canine XLPRA disease interval, 11 X-linked markers were mapped, both meiotically, in two extensive …

Transport Properties Of Bi2−Xinxse3 Single Crystals., J. Navrátil, T. Plecháček, J. Horák, S. Karamazov, P. LošŤÁK, Jeffrey Dyck, W. Chen, C. Uher Aug 2001

Transport Properties Of Bi2−Xinxse3 Single Crystals., J. Navrátil, T. Plecháček, J. Horák, S. Karamazov, P. LošŤÁK, Jeffrey Dyck, W. Chen, C. Uher

Jeffrey Dyck

The paper reports on the temperature dependence of the electrical and thermal conductivity, Hall constant, and Seebeck coefficient of Bi2−xInxSe3 (x=0, 0.2, 0.4) single crystals measured over the temperature range from 2 to 300 K. One single-valley conduction band model is used to interpret relations among transport coefficients. The data analysis relies on the use of a mixed carrier scattering mechanism consisting of acoustic scattering and scattering on ionized impurities. The effect of In incorporation into the Bi2Se3 crystal lattice on the individual components of thermal conductivity is evaluated and discussed. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.

Anomalous Barium Filling Fraction And N-Type Thermoelectric Performance Of Ba[Sub Y]Co[Sub 4]Sb[Sub 12]., L. Chen, T. Kawahara, X. Tang, T. Goto, T. Hirai, Jeffrey Dyck, W. Chen, C. Uher Aug 2001

Anomalous Barium Filling Fraction And N-Type Thermoelectric Performance Of Ba[Sub Y]Co[Sub 4]Sb[Sub 12]., L. Chen, T. Kawahara, X. Tang, T. Goto, T. Hirai, Jeffrey Dyck, W. Chen, C. Uher

Jeffrey Dyck

Barium-filled skutterudites BaCoSb with an anomalously large filling fraction of up to y=0.44 have been synthesized. The lattice parameters increase linearly with Ba content. Magnetic susceptibility data show that BaCoSb is paramagnetic, which implies that some of the Co atoms in BaCoSb have acquired a magnetic moment. The presence of the two different valence states of Co (Co3+ and Co2+) leads to the anomalously large barium filling fraction even without extra charge compensation. All samples show n-type conduction. The electrical conductivity increases with increasing the Ba filling fraction. The lattice thermal conductivity of BaCoSb is significantly depressed as compared to …

Hybrid Organizations And The Alignment Of Interests: The Case Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac, Jonathan Koppell Jun 2001

Hybrid Organizations And The Alignment Of Interests: The Case Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac, Jonathan Koppell

Jonathan GS Koppell

This article explores the political influence of government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs). Using Congress's overhaul of the regulatory infrastructure for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as a case study, the article presents two principal findings: (1) The characteristics that distinguish government-sponsored enterprises from traditional government agencies and private companies endow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with unique political resources; and (2) the alignment of interest groups around Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is subject to strategic manipulation by the GSEs. A triangular model of this alignment is proposed and employed to analyze the legislative outcome. The case has implications for students of …

Third Generation Seesaw Mixing With New Vector-Like Weak-Doublet Quarks, Marko Popovic Jun 2001

Third Generation Seesaw Mixing With New Vector-Like Weak-Doublet Quarks, Marko Popovic

Marko B. Popovic

We present a class of models with a third generation seesaw mixing with new vectorlike weak-doublet quarks. We analyze a low-energy phenomenology and present several strong dynamics, high-energy realizations of these models. In the top-color-type scenario, named top-bottom color, we obtain an effective, composite two Higgs doublet model where the third generation isospin splitting is introduced via tilting interactions related to the broken non-Abelian gauge groups @i.e., without strong, triviality-sensitive U~1! groups#. In addition, we discuss t t ¯ production at the Next Linear Collider and suggest how one can experimentally observe and distinguish between the weak-doublet and the weak-singlet …

Reversible Calcium-Regulated Stopcocks In Legume Sieve Tubes, Michael Knoblauch, Winfried Peters, Katrin Ehlers, Aart Van Bel Apr 2001

Reversible Calcium-Regulated Stopcocks In Legume Sieve Tubes, Michael Knoblauch, Winfried Peters, Katrin Ehlers, Aart Van Bel

Winfried S. Peters

Sieve tubes of legumes (Fabaceae) contain characteristic P-protein crystalloids with controversial function. We studied their behavior by conventional light, electron, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. In situ, crystalloids are able to undergo rapid (<1>sec) and reversible conversions from the condensed resting state into a dispersed state, in which they occlude the sieve tubes. Crystalloid dispersal is triggered by plasma membrane leakage induced by mechanical injury or permeabilizing substances. Similarly, abrupt turgor changes imposed by osmotic shock cause crystalloid dispersal. Because chelators generally prevent the response, divalent cations appear to be the decisive factor in crystalloid expansion. Cycling between dispersal and …

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

The relationship between the neurosensory photoreceptors and the adjacent retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) controls not only normal retinal function, but also the pathogenesis of hereditary retinal degenerations. The molecular bases for both primary photoreceptor1 and RPE diseases2, 3, 4 that cause blindness have been identified. Gene therapy has been used successfully to slow degeneration in rodent models of primary photoreceptor diseases5, 6, but efficacy of gene therapy directed at photoreceptors and RPE in a large-animal model of human disease has not been reported. Here we study one of the most clinically severe retinal degenerations, Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA). LCA causes …

Evaluation Of Retinal Photoreceptors And Pigment Epithelium In A Female Carrier Of Choroideremia, Nasreen Syed, Julie E. Smith, Sinoj K. John, Miguel C. Seabra, Gustavo D. Aguirre, Ann H. Milam

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

Purpose: To clarify the pathogenesis of choroideremia.
Study Design: Human tissue study.
Tissues: Eyes of an 88-year-old symptomatic female carrier of choroideremia (CHM) and six normal, age-matched donors.
Methods: The eyes were processed for histopathologic examination, including immunocytochemistry with an antibody against the CHM gene product, REP-1, and retinal cell-specific markers.
Results: The CHM carrier retina showed patchy degeneration, but the photoreceptor and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) loss appeared to be independent. The choriocapillaris was normal except where retinal areas were severely degenerate. The CHM gene product, REP-1, was localized to the cytoplasm of rods but not cones.
Conclusions: It …

Stereoselective One-Pot Synthesis Of Vinylsilanes From Aromatic Aldehydes, Man Lung Kwan, Chiu Yeung, Kerry Breno, Kenneth Doxsee Feb 2001

Stereoselective One-Pot Synthesis Of Vinylsilanes From Aromatic Aldehydes, Man Lung Kwan, Chiu Yeung, Kerry Breno, Kenneth Doxsee

Man Lung Desmond Kwan

Vinylsilanes serve as convenient vinyl anion equivalents, but procedures for their stereoselective synthesis from aldehydes are scarce. A variety of aromatic aldehydes are converted to the corresponding vinylsilanes in a one-pot procedure involving the addition of (trimethylsilylmethyl)lithium to the aldehyde followed by treatment with Cp2TiCH2·AlMe2Cl (‘Tebbe's reagent’). Halide and alkoxide substituents are tolerated, and (E)-vinylsilanes are formed exclusively in good yield.

measure resolution acuity in bumblebees (Bombus impatiens). Bees were required to discriminate between horizontal and vertical gratings in a Y-maze apparatus. The gratings had a mean luminance of 9 cd m−2 and a Michelson contrast of 84 %. For different bees, either the horizontal or vertical grating was rewarded. Rewarded gratings were associated with a sucrose and water solution (30 % sucrose by volume) and unrewarded gratings with plain water. Acuity estimates were established at several different viewing distances over several sessions using a method of constant stimuli. Visual acuity functions were generated from the performance data, and acuity thresholds …
