The Effect Of Solvent Type On The Infrared Spectrum Of Carbon Monoxide Adsorbed At Platinum Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Daniel Blackwood, Thomas Richmond, Stanley Pons Dec 1988

The Effect Of Solvent Type On The Infrared Spectrum Of Carbon Monoxide Adsorbed At Platinum Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Daniel Blackwood, Thomas Richmond, Stanley Pons

Mark R. Anderson

The infrared spectrum of CO adsorbed on a platinum electrode from several solvents was investigated. In N-methylformamide, acetonitrile, and 1,2-dichloroethane, the infrared band attributed to linearly bonded CO had experimental Stark tuning rates of 20 cm−1/V, 22 cm−1/V, and 19 cm−1/V, respectively. For each of these solvents, the potential dependence of the band position was found to be linear for the entire potential range investigated. When methanol was the solvent, the plot of the band position versus potential had three distinctly linear portions, each with a different value for the slope. The behavior is explained in terms of the ability …

The Behavior Of The Infrared Spectrum Of Carbon Monoxide Adsorbed At Platinum Electrodes From Non-Aqueous Solvents, Mark Anderson, Daniel Blackwood, Stanley Pons Dec 1988

The Behavior Of The Infrared Spectrum Of Carbon Monoxide Adsorbed At Platinum Electrodes From Non-Aqueous Solvents, Mark Anderson, Daniel Blackwood, Stanley Pons

Mark R. Anderson

Electrochemical oxidation of vanadium hexacarbonyl anion, V(Co)6 in aprotic solvents results in formation of the V(0) complex which decomposes to form CO in high concentrations next to the electrode surface. As a result, CO is more rapidly adsorbed on the surface than by conventional methods. Surface reflection infrared spectroscopy shows that the potential dependent frequency shift for the infrared active bands due to CO adsorbed on platinum is 19 cm−1/V in 1,2-dichloroethane and 22 cm−1/V in acetonitrile, which are considerably less than the 30 cm−1/V observed in aqueous systems.

Nonfish Prey Of Wintering Bald Eagles In Lilinois, Given Harper, D. Scott Hopkins, Thomas C. Dunston

Given Harper

Many Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) winter in Illinois (Fawks 1979), where they feed primarily on fish (e.g., Southern 1966, Fischer 1982, Harper 1983). However, few reports have been published documenting their use of mammalian and avian prey in the midwestern United States (Lingle and Krapu 1986, Stalmaster 1987). This paper describes the almost exclusive use of nonfish prey in an upland population of Bald Eagles, and discusses related management implications.

S-Antigen In A Hereditary Visual Cell Disease. Immunocytochemical And Immunological Studies, Gustavo D. Aguirre, K Long, N Philp, I Gery

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

S-antigen is a photoreceptor-specific and potentially autoantigenic protein. Using light microscopic immunocytochemistry, the localization of S-antigen was studied in the retinas of normal dogs and Irish setters affected with rod-cone dysplasia, a hereditary retinal degeneration characterized by abnormal cGMP metabolism and arrested outer segment differentiation. Normal and affected dogs were also tested for the presence of humoral and cellular immunity to S-antigen. S-antigen was present in both rods and cones during inner and outer segment differentiation, but there was an apparent loss of immunoreactivity in cones as the retina matured. The developmental appearance and localization of S-antigen in affected retinas …

Surface-Enhanced Raman Study Of The Effect Of Electrode Potential And Solution Ph Upon The Interfacial Behavior Of 4-Pyridinecarboxaldehyde, Mark Anderson, Dennis Evans Aug 1988

Surface-Enhanced Raman Study Of The Effect Of Electrode Potential And Solution Ph Upon The Interfacial Behavior Of 4-Pyridinecarboxaldehyde, Mark Anderson, Dennis Evans

Mark R. Anderson

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra were obtained at a silver electrode in aqueous solutions at potentials from -0.2 to -0.6 V vs SCE and pH 1-7. The forms of 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde that are adsorbed parallel those present in solution. In particular, the fraction of adsorbed species that is protonated at -0.2 V varies with pH in a manner almost identical with the fraction that is protonated in bulk solution. The protonated compound exists almost completely in the hydrated form (gem-diol) in the interface just as it does in solution. At a given pH, the fraction protonated on the surface increases as …

Influence Of Wind And Windbreaks On Local Dispersal Of Insects, Judith Pasek Jul 1988

Influence Of Wind And Windbreaks On Local Dispersal Of Insects, Judith Pasek

Judith E Pasek

Insect dispersal is affected by the wind and as a result, influenced by the presence of windbreaks. Wind reductions, microclimate modifications and vegetative diversity, influence insect distribution in sheltered areas.

Wingless insects and very small insects generally depend on air currents to carry them to new sites, but they tend to settle in areas with low windspeeds. It is often more advantageous for a flying insect to remain within its boundary layer where windspeeds are lower than the insect's flight speed. Flying insects tend to accumulate in areas of reduced windspeed where they have greater control of flight; however, distribution …

Correlated Muscle And Nerve Development In The Bullfrog Cutaneous Pectoris, Diana Linden, Michael Letinsky Feb 1988

Correlated Muscle And Nerve Development In The Bullfrog Cutaneous Pectoris, Diana Linden, Michael Letinsky

Diana Linden

The development of the cutaneous pectoris muscle was studied and compared with the differentiation of its peripheral nerve in bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles and frogs by light and electron microscopic techniques. This muscle preparation was chosen for this study because it possesses a number of advantages for (and has become a model system for) the study of correlated nerve-muscle development. At the earliest stage examined (stage XI) the presumptive muscle did not contain any contractile or morphologically distinguishable myotubes, but was contacted by the well-defined cutaneous pectoris nerve trunk. Myotubes were present at stage XII, the same time that nerve-associated …

Stressors In The Learned Helplessness Paradigm: Effects On Body Weight And Conditioned Taste Aversion In Rats., Clinton Chapman, Nancy Dess, John Garcia, Jeffrey Raizer

Clinton D Chapman

In Exp 1, 44 male rats drank saccharin or a control solution, followed by 100 inescapable shocks or simple restraint. Ss were weighed daily and were tested for saccharin aversion 2 days after the stress session. Shocked Ss gained less weight than restrained controls. Saccharin aversion was apparent only among Ss that had consumed saccharin before the stress session. In Exp 2, 72 Ss drank saccharin solution, followed by shock, restraint, or no treatment. Half of each group was injected with saline; the other half was injected with lithium chloride. Shock reduced body weight relative to restraint or no treatment …

Motivation And Tort Law: Acting For Economic Gain As A Suspect Motive, Martin A. Kotler Dec 1987

Motivation And Tort Law: Acting For Economic Gain As A Suspect Motive, Martin A. Kotler

Martin A. Kotler

Traditionally, tort scholars had claimed that the motives underlying a tortfeasor’s decision to act were largely irrelevant. This Article challenges that view by showing the recurring importance of motive. Specifically, whether the actor is perceived to have been motivated by a desire for personal economic gain or, conversely, motivated by altruism correlates closely with the development of tort doctrine imposing liability on the former and immunizing the latter.

The observation that the economically motivated actor has been disfavored historically contradicts much of the descriptive and normative law and economics literature which argued that wealth maximizing behavior was and should be …
