In the past two decades, the international-student population increased to about 600,000 (Canada Bureau for International Education, 2018). According to The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC, 2019I), international students contributed an estimated $21.6 billion to the Canadian gross domestic product. With the COVID-19 pandemic, recruitment of international students, and the economic contribution they bring is under threat. Research has found unintentional plagiarism to be the most common type of university plagiarism, yet what underlies it is not adequately understood. Thus, our study examines ESL student perspectives on academic integrity challenges, especially unintentional plagiarism and university interventions. The study employed semi-structured individual qualitative interviews with 20 ESL students who had just completed an advanced EAP writing course at a Canadian university in the Winter semester of 2021. The course discussed plagiarism and the APA 7th edition extensively. One interview per participant was conducted online and the data were analyzed qualitatively. The concept of empathy, commonly used in user experience (UX) design, has gained traction in distance education communities (Matthews et al., 2017). Empathy offers designers insight into users and their contexts (Neubauer et al., 2017) and helps designers “understand how instruction would be experienced” (Parrish, 2006), thus improving the overall outcome (Lewis & Contrino, 2016; Neubauer et al., 2017; Parrish, 2006). This study aims to explore the role of machine learning in a human learning process. In particular, we use word embedding and basic recurrent neural network methodologies in the teaching of terminology and specialized knowledge acquisition for translation students. Results show that word distribution in vector space trained on a relevant corpus can provide useful insights for learners to understand the terms and their associated concepts. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-related campus access restrictions on the teaching and learning of English as a second or additional language. A mixed-methods survey of ESL teachers, followed by optional structured interviews, was chosen as the research design. Results showed that the requirement to move instruction wholly, or partially, to an online format created emotional and cognitive hardships for students, but a rich professional-development opportunity for teachers as they dealt with the challenges of online instruction. This ongoing longitudinal case study explores five international graduate students’ perceptions of online learning, particularly concerning their transition from in-person to online courses as a product of COVID-19, in order to better understand the affordances and challenges associated with this medium of instruction. Thematic analysis is used to identify emerging trends from qualitative data collected from semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. With COVID-19 forcing post-secondary educational institutions to shift to open and online learning, understanding the needs of international students is more important than ever before. This paper will explore the connection between the promising practices for teaching online linguistically and culturally diverse international students with international student satisfaction and perceptions of learning. The study collected data through 15 individual interviews. Data analysis identified the teaching practices and individual characteristics that resonate with international student satisfaction and perceptions of learning. Recommendations for professional practice are discussed, along with potential areas for further research.

This study explores the degree to which common tasks of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) align with the speaking functions of the intermediate and advanced levels of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Guidelines. By aligning TTRPG gameplay with ACTFL oral proficiency functions, teachers may help online language learners engage in group discussions that improve their speaking skills.
