Educational Opportunities In Spanish West Florida, 1781-1821, Jack D. L. Holmes Dec 2021

Educational Opportunities In Spanish West Florida, 1781-1821, Jack D. L. Holmes

Florida Historical Quarterly

Governor Vicente Folch y Juan opened his son Stephen’s 1797 letter with eager hands. Due to the Anglo-Spanish war, communications to Pensacola had been delayed, and he was relieved to learn that both his sons were well. To his superior, Captain-General Conde de Santa Clara, at Havana, Governor Folch wrote, “The lack of opportunity which is generally true of these (frontier) places for providing the youth with an adequate education, has induced me to send my sons to London where they may learn English to perfection, such skill being of inestimable value in these provinces.“

Early Education In Tallahassee And The West Florida Seminary, Now Florida State University, Part Ii, William G. Dodd Mar 2021

Early Education In Tallahassee And The West Florida Seminary, Now Florida State University, Part Ii, William G. Dodd

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the year 1850, Tallahassee, through its city government, took the first faltering steps which led later in the decade to the organization of a stable school system. Before that year, as was told in Part I of this article, parents had depended for the education of their children on private schools and on two corporate institutions, Leon Academy and Leon Female Academy. The former, constantly in financial straits, was barely kept alive through the years from 1827 to 1840. The Female Academy, begun in 1844, continued as an independent school until 1858. Thus the story of boys’ education before …

The Rise And Fall Of South Carolina College, Robert D. Cathcart Iii Apr 2020

The Rise And Fall Of South Carolina College, Robert D. Cathcart Iii

Senior Theses

Through a thorough examination of the underpinnings of Classical education, as well as the history of South Carolina College, it is clear that the classical system is superior to the later University system imposed upon the College during the Reconstruction period. Classical education began in the Greek philosophic schools, such as the Academy and the Lyceum, and was intended to enrich the soul of its students, as well as to equip them for leadership in the future. But the most important aspect of this education was its universality. It is highly ironic that the original concept of the University …

A Power Man’S Theology: Marvel’S Luke Cage And Black Liberation Theology, Diarron B. Morrison Dec 2019

A Power Man’S Theology: Marvel’S Luke Cage And Black Liberation Theology, Diarron B. Morrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Netflix released Marvel’s Luke Cage in 2016 to critical acclaim. Born from a 1970s comic book, the series features Luke Cage, an African-American superhero. Cage is a big, bald, bulletproof black man. Instead of tights and a cape, Cage wears a hoodie calling the audience to remember Trayvon Martin and other victims of white racism. Theologian James Cone created Black Liberation Theology in the 1970s. As a result of Cone’s work, Black Liberation Theology addresses the issue of white racism from a theological standpoint. In this thesis I present a close reading of Marvel’s Luke Cage using Black Liberation Theology …

All oral histories

Minor interviewed her for her position and she engaged with him on the train collection she saw in his office. She recalls giving him advice on books to purchase for his Classica collection. Myers loaned her a particular book and he expressed anxiety over its safety. She observes that he was not an astute collector of books in her area of expertise but recalls that he kept "want lists" of titles to look for and he would also look for items she was interested in. Sultan believes that Myers' "curiosity about learning" was infectious and important for students, staff and …

Greek Immigration To Richmond, Virginia, And The Southern Variant Theory, Nicole Kappatos Jan 2014

Greek Immigration To Richmond, Virginia, And The Southern Variant Theory, Nicole Kappatos

Theses and Dissertations

Greek immigration to the United States occurred in two distinctive waves: the first wave from the 1890s-1920s and the second wave from the 1960s-1980s. This thesis explores the regional diversity of the Greek immigrant experience in the Southern United States through the case study of the Greek community in Richmond, Virginia. The first chapter introduces the history of Greek immigration to the United States, discusses major scholars of Greek American studies, and explains the Southern Variant theory. Chapter two examines the experiences of the first wave of Greek immigrants in Richmond. The third chapter incorporates oral history to explain the …

On The Social Construction Of Hellenism Cold War Narratives Of Modernity, Development And Democracy For Greece, Despina Lalaki Dec 2012

On The Social Construction Of Hellenism Cold War Narratives Of Modernity, Development And Democracy For Greece, Despina Lalaki

Publications and Research

Hellenism is one of those overarching, ever-changing narratives always subject to historical circumstances, intellectual fashions and political needs. Conversely, it is fraught with meaning and conditioning powers, enabling and constraining imagination and practical life. In this essay I tease out the hold that the idea of Hellas has had on post-war Greece and I explore the ways in which the American anti-communist rhetoric and discussions about political and economic stabilization appropriated and rearticulated Hellenism. Central to this history of transformations are the archaeologists; the archaeologists as intellectuals, as producers of culture who, while stepping in and out of their disciplinary …

Short Remarks On The Political And Social Writings Of Reverend Anthony Walke Of Princess Anne County, Virginia & A Concise & Impartial Account Of The Causes Of Their Origins & Progress, Roberta Vogt Dec 2011

Short Remarks On The Political And Social Writings Of Reverend Anthony Walke Of Princess Anne County, Virginia & A Concise & Impartial Account Of The Causes Of Their Origins & Progress, Roberta Vogt

All Theses

The following thesis examines multiple social and political topics in the largely unstudied writings of Reverend Anthony Walke (c. 1755-1814) of Princess Anne County, Virginia. His papers reside at the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, Kentucky, as well as appearing in Virginia newspapers of the period. Walke's works comprise more than four hundred pages of primary source documents that relate to late eighteenth-century Virginia, and span the period of 1786 through 1805.
My research emphasizes his Revolutionary War pamphlet, Remarkable Occurrences during the unhappy American War, & a concise & impartial Account of the Causes of its Origin & Progress: …

Original Pennsylvania College Building, Robert S. Kellert Apr 2010

Original Pennsylvania College Building, Robert S. Kellert

Hidden in Plain Sight Projects

At the corner of Washington and High Streets in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania stands a modest old house—an anachronism that somehow seems so fitting in a town of such rich history. In the foreground lies a fairly inconspicuous plaque with condensed text—easy to miss on a leisurely car ride past the antiquated structure. Casually passing by, residents and tourists alike might not give the house a second thought or reflect on its origins. Yet, were they to merely glance over the building‘s historic plaque, they would discover a building whose significance can hardly be overstated. This was the site of the original …

Faith In Action: The First Citizenship School On Johns Island, South Carolina., Amanda Shrader Jordan Aug 2008

Faith In Action: The First Citizenship School On Johns Island, South Carolina., Amanda Shrader Jordan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the first Citizenship School, its location, participants, and success. Johns Islanders, Esau Jenkins, Septima Clark, Myles Horton, Bernice Robinson, and the Highlander Folk School all collaborated to create this school. Why and how this success was reached is the main scope of this manuscript. Emphasis is also placed on the school's impact upon the modern Civil Rights Movement. Primary sources such as personal accounts, manuscripts, and archive collections were examined. Secondary sources were also researched for this manuscript. The conclusion reached from these sources is that faith was the driving force behind the success of the Citizenship …

The Framers' Idea Of Marriage And Family, David F. Forte Jan 2006

The Framers' Idea Of Marriage And Family, David F. Forte

Law Faculty Contributions to Books

The founders understood the symbiotic connection between family virtues and civic virtues. They knew it through their study of the classics, through their imbibing of the Scottish enlightenment, through their understanding of the providential nature of the Judeo-Christian God, through their familiarity with self-governing liberty, and through their utter respect of their own human experience of living. They looked upon the family as a model in which man’s selfish impulses would be contained, where the coordination of practical tasks could be effectuated, and where sentiments of affection and mutual respect could bind a people into a nation. It was the …

"Monkeying With The Bible”: Edgar J. Goodspeed's American Translation, R. Bryan Bademan Jan 2006

"Monkeying With The Bible”: Edgar J. Goodspeed's American Translation, R. Bryan Bademan

History Faculty Publications

Devotion to the Bible remains an underappreciated aspect of American religious life partly because it fails to generate controversy. This essay opens a window onto America's relationship with the Bible by exploring a controversial moment in the history of the Bible in America: the public reception of University of Chicago professor Edgar J. Goodspeed's American Translation (1923). Initially, at least, most Americans flatly rejected Goodspeed's impeccably credentialed attempt to cast the language of the Bible in contemporary "American" English. Accusations of the professor's irreligion, bad taste, vulgarity, and crass modernity emerged from nearly every quarter of the Protestant establishment (with …

The Way We Were: A History Of Student Life At Gettysburg College 1832-1982, Anna Jane Moyer

College History Publications

In writing The Way We Were: A History of Student Life at Gettysburg College, 1832-1982, it has been my purpose to capture what it was like to be a student at Gettysburg as the changing patterns of that life evolved and shifted with the growth of the College and events in the world outside the campus. Space confines impose perimeters. No attempt has been made to detail the history of organizations or to include many of the names of persons involved in campus leadership. The role of athletics has been mentioned only briefly as two monographs in the History …
