Session A-3: Across The Wide Missouri: Illinois & Early Exploration Of The Trans-Mississippi West, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr. Jul 2016

Session A-3: Across The Wide Missouri: Illinois & Early Exploration Of The Trans-Mississippi West, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Illinois History is often perceived as a contradiction in terms. Until the arrival of Abraham Lincoln, most folks think that nothing of any note happened here. This presentation will address the French traders and explorers from the Illinois Country who pushed west up the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers in the century preceding Lewis and Clark's more famous jaunt. The two knew of these French travelers only too well and recruited a half dozen Illinois French at Fort Massac and Kaskaskia to show them how to get to the "unknown". The effect these men had on the Plains was profound.

Open Your Research Without Opening Your Wallet, Janelle L. Wertzberger

Janelle Wertzberger

Open scholarship promotes sharing and collaboration, increases readership, and amplifies impact. It is gaining traction as institutions, professional associations, and funding agencies encourage or require broad sharing of research results. Yet many authors believe that the only way to open their work is to pay publishers thousands of dollars for the privilege. Luckily for us, that just isn’t the case. Come hear about a range of ways to open your research without paying for the privilege! Lunch provided. (Limited seating, RSVP to jwertzbe@gettysburg.edu)

Critical Transitions In Faculty Learning: Helping Faculty Become Learning-Centered Teachers, Judith Longfield Nov 2014

Critical Transitions In Faculty Learning: Helping Faculty Become Learning-Centered Teachers, Judith Longfield

Judith Longfield

New methodologies of teaching and learning are changing the landscape of higher education. However, faculty are often unaware of the research and continue to rely heavily on lecture. During this interactive session, participants will learn how an extended series, known as the Teaching Academy, transformed instructors’ ideas about effective teaching and their classroom practices. In addition to learning about the impact of the Academy, participants will also consider ways to overcome barriers and implement this type of in-depth faculty development, which did not require additional funding, on their campuses.

Contractual relationships between faculty members and departments are like marriages and tenured relationships like marriages with children. If either party wants out, the implications can be personally and professionally devastating. While faculty quality is periodically evaluated by performance in teaching, scholarship, and service, one’s ability to develop and maintain successful personal relationships within academic environments may impact, even override, acceptable professional performance. Roundtable participants will discuss leaving institutions and being asked to leave institutions due to the personal affecting the professional, seeking other employment after an academic “divorce” ("remarriage"), professional versus personal loyalties, and other related topics.

Advising For Academic Rigor, Jefferson Blackburn-Smith, Kate Webster

Ohio College Access Network

Most commonly accepted definitions of “college ready” in use today include the phrase “qualified for and able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing college courses without the need for remedial coursework.” The key to attaining this global benchmark is rigorous academic preparation with focus, at all grade levels, on curricular alignment, effective advising, and the provision of the supports that students need to attain their academic goals. This PP slide deck accompanied a webinar by that same title that addresses all three of these components. The live webinar/training was timed to coincide with student course selection for the upcoming school year.

References to 21st Century Learning Skills (integral to creating college- and career-ready graduates) litter the current landscape – educationally, legislatively, and in the media. This PPT presentation slide deck accompanied the webinar by the same title that addressed those skills which might be most effectively developed outside of the classroom and will increase the participants’ awareness of exemplar school year and summer enrichment opportunities (both in central Ohio, statewide and throughout the country) that may, in turn, be communicated to the students …
