The Effect Of Sleep Environment On Sleep Quality And Behavior In Firefighters, Erica Esper

Celebration of Scholarship 2023

Firefighting is a demanding profession with high physical and psychological demands. Additionally, shift work results in abnormal working hours, decreased work-life balance, and poor recovery, impacting sleep behaviors. Poor sleep has been associated with health issues such as increased cardiometabolic risk, mental health disorders, and reduced cognitive function. While this population is prone to disrupted sleep while on shift, little research exists describing the effect of the on-duty sleeping environment on sleep quality in firefighters. PURPOSE: Examine the effect of the sleep environment on sleep quality in firefighters. METHODS: Sixty-six firefighters (Age= 40.89±11.05; Body Mass Index = 29.01±3.84) enrolled in …

Inclusivity Evolving For Women In Sport, Mckenna Chesbro

Transformations: Presentation Slides

For my research project, I have found numerous peer reviewed journals and secondary sources detailing accounts of how the sport industry is and how it has changed to become more inclusive towards women in sport. Some topics include media coverage for women and how women are portrayed in the media, the gender pay gap, Title IX, women referees and women in higher positions in professional sports. I surveyed alumni and women's lacrosse players at the Division 1 and 3 level to gain a better perspective of the state of the sport industry currently.

Communism, Post-Communism, Sport, And Patriotism In 1980s-1990s Hungary, Sarah Johns, Morgana Olbrich

We will argue that Communism left long lasting effects on the ways in which patriotism was perceived and executed through labor. Specifically we will look into the ways in which laborers, namely athletes, both intentionally and unintentionally used their work to gain privileges.

How Politics Can Shape Sports And The Athletes Who Perform: A Case Study Of Hungarian Gymnastics During The Cold War, Julia Adams, Corinne Cichowicz Apr 2019

How Politics Can Shape Sports And The Athletes Who Perform: A Case Study Of Hungarian Gymnastics During The Cold War, Julia Adams, Corinne Cichowicz

Cold War Lives

The purpose of the project is to juxtapose how politics and government structure shape the world of sports, as well as the progress of individual sports, with the isolation of athletes from the political realities of their respective nations. We assert that contemporary politics is directly reflected in the sports community through the way athletes interact and the ways other nations perceive athletes’ treatment. We argue that around the Hungarian Revolution, Eastern countries like Hungary attempted to perform their strength by giving privileges that allowed athletes to excel while western nations like the United States focused on fostering their savior …

The American Disabilities Act became law in 1990 under George Bush. It is a civil rights law that protect individuals with disabilities in all areas of life. It is similar to the protection of individual on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age or religion. In reference to construction of spaces it plays a major role in planning for the accessibility of a space for projects on commercial or private business based on size of a company or organization. But in general it is looking out for a group that is not able to look out for themselves …

Conquering Gender Stereotypes One Football At A Time, Rani Bezanson Apr 2018

Conquering Gender Stereotypes One Football At A Time, Rani Bezanson

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2018

In the U.S., gender stereotypes in sports are real. As a result, women who are involved with professional sports, either as players or have professional positions face negative stereotypes. When women have coaching positions, they feel unsupported from administrators and colleagues, which has a direct impact on their involvement and prove their credibility at their jobs (LaFountaine and Kamphoff 2016). My thesis here is that there is a relationship between the impact of negative stereotypes for women who are active in sports and their involvement. For, they do not receive sufficient support. The hypothesis, taken from the above thesis, is …

Welcome to another season of Cardinal Football! As you know, Otterbein is a member of the NCAA Division III where we have true student-athletes. Rather than watching athletes for whom academics is an afterthought, you are here to see students who understand the importance of their total educational experience — inside and outside the formal classroom. These students play because they love the game, learn valuable lessons from the experience, and get to represent their University. I am awed by their commitment — spending countless hours to achieve excellence on the field, in the classroom, and in life. Thank you …
