Migration, Remittances, And Child Growth: Evidence From Cambodia, Vatana Chea, Patcharawalai Wongboonsin
Migration, Remittances, And Child Growth: Evidence From Cambodia, Vatana Chea, Patcharawalai Wongboonsin
Journal of Demography
Remittances have become a main resource for development in low- and middle-income countries around the world. With impressive growth in remittances over the decades comes interest in their importance to development. Using data from the 2009 Cambodian Socio-Economic Survey with a sample of 2,767 children under 5 years of age, this study investigates the impact of migration and of remittances on children's quality of health, and tests whether or not the so-called permanent income hypothesis holds for remittances relative to other income. Also employed is two-stage least squares analysis to account for potential endogeneity problems. In short, it was found …
Palestinian Motherhood In Lebanon: An Analysis Of The Legal And Humanitarian Systems, Enje Matar
Palestinian Motherhood In Lebanon: An Analysis Of The Legal And Humanitarian Systems, Enje Matar
Theses and Dissertations
The lives of Palestinians in Lebanon are shaped by a diversity of factors that are exogenous and endogenous. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the impact of existing institutional, legal, and societal structures on Palestinian refugee mothers. It answers the following main question: how do the legal and humanitarian systems in Lebanon impact Palestinian mothers? It specifically scrutinizes 1) How do these systems shape family dynamics, maternal relations with children, and mothers’ daily lives? 2) How are these systems gendered in ways that represent broader questions of power and control? 3) How do mothers respond to these systems …

Bridging The Gap Between Career Expectations Versus Labor Market Realities, Reinette P. Madrid, Grethel T. Ledesma, Ignatius Aryono Putranto, Jyro B. Triviño
Leadership and Strategy Faculty Publications
Most students lack awareness regarding the labor market outcomes for their chosen college majors. This study aims to answer what factors affect the career expectations of graduating students at Quezon City University and how these expectations align with the prevailing labor market situation. It employed descriptive, causal, and explanatory research using a sample of 108 respondents from fourth-year information technology students for the school year 2021 to 2022. Eight of the nine null hypotheses were rejected by employing multinomial logistic and linear regression. Student fixed effects and other labor market outcomes significantly predicted salary, estimated stability, and estimated skills in …

Hurricane Impacts Compounded By Sea Level Rise: An Illustrative Case Study Of Economic Impacts And Workforce Resilience Analysis, Juita-Elena Yusuf, Yin-Hsuen Chen, Robert M. Mcnab, George M. Mcleod
School of Public Service Faculty Publications
Expected sea level rise will increase the probability of extreme flooding events, such as those associated with hurricane surge and/or heavy rainfall. Projecting the economic impacts of a significant hurricane is necessary for weighing the costs and benefits of potential mitigation actions. Accounting for the compounding effects of sea level rise is critical, given the challenges elevated sea levels pose to coastal communities in the U.S. and worldwide. This chapter asks: How can we comprehensively estimate the economic impacts of a hurricane event that is compounded by sea level rise? To address this, we offer a methodology for conducting an …
Nourishing Births: A Program Evaluation Proposal For Community-Based Nutrition Education, Food Access, And Garden Engagement Among Black Birthing People, Naa Deedei-Vera Hammond
Nourishing Births: A Program Evaluation Proposal For Community-Based Nutrition Education, Food Access, And Garden Engagement Among Black Birthing People, Naa Deedei-Vera Hammond
Master's Projects and Capstones
Black birthing people in the United States continue to experience unequal maternal health outcomes, shaped in part by racism and barriers to nutritious food, culturally relevant health education, and supportive community spaces. While prenatal nutrition education and food assistance programs can provide important resources, information alone cannot address the challenges many people face when trying to access healthy and affordable food during pregnancy. The Nourishing Births Initiative is a proposed community-based maternal health program designed to respond to these needs by bringing together prenatal nutrition education, help connecting to food resources, community gardening, and peer support for Black birthing people …

The Downstream Effect Of Gender Bias On Academic Performance And Career Aspirations Amongst Female Students In Stem Via Gender-Professional Identity Integration (G-Pii), Chi-Ying Cheng, Shuna Shiann Khoo, Shih-Fen Cheng, Yeow Leong Lee, Vandana Ramachandra Rao
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Background Gender imbalance in STEM, characterized by a significant underrepresentation of women, remains a significant challenge. Although gender bias is a well-known contributor to women’s attrition from STEM, the psychological mechanisms linking gender bias to departure are less well understood. Our research investigates early antecedents of attrition and the psychological processes that precede leaving the STEM pathway in tertiary education. Drawing upon identity integration research, we propose that perceived gender bias exerts undermines female STEM students’ academic performance and career aspirations by reducing their Gender-Professional Identity Integration (G-PII), a construct that captures individual differences in the perceived compatibility between a …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Strategies to address social exclusion often involve promoting social connectedness and a sense of belonging. Drawing from existing literature on social inclusion, social connectedness, and belonging, including the use of primary data, this study explored the experiences of African migrants regarding their sense of connectedness and belonging in Australia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted online with 16 African migrants living in Australia. Using purposive sampling, participants were recruited through community groups across various towns and cities. Interviews were conducted via Teams and Zoom video calls, and subsequently transcribed manually for thematic analysis. Findings highlight the necessity for interventions targeting isolation and …

Unpacking Environmental Racism Through Dependency Theory In The Case Of Second-Hand Goods Export To West Africa, Prince Nii Koi Kotei, Adusei-Asante, Shajimon Peter, Portia Nana Ama Brempong
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The second-hand goods export market is complex and inextricably intertwined with environmental racism and dependency theories. Studies have shown that the adverse impacts of second-hand goods exports outweigh their benefits. West African countries are marginalised and are trapped in a dependency cycle. The literature discusses secondhand goods exports; however, it rarely situates this within the context of the dependency theory and environmental racism. This study seeks to address this gap by integrating several studies under a common theoretical framework connecting dependency theory to environmental racism. This study unpacks environmental racism through dependency theory in the export of second-hand goods. Specifically, …

Participatory Research With People With Aphasia: Frameworks, Examples, And Implementation Guidance, Jacqueline J. Hinckley, Katie A. Strong, Brent Archer, Lauren Bislick, Suma R. Devanga, Amy E. R. Engelhoven, Anthony Pak-Hin Kong
The Qualitative Report
Participatory research (PR) improves the meaningfulness and efficiency of research and reduces the research-to-practice gap, because it includes the lived experience of those who are affected by the research in the planning, execution, and dissemination of the research. Communication disabilities, like aphasia due to stroke, or communication differences impact the way in which meaningful research collaborations can take place. The purpose of this paper is to describe the ethics, challenges, and opportunities for involving people with aphasia as collaborators in research. We highlight specific examples of PR projects undertaken by community member teams composed of researchers, clinicians, people with aphasia, …

Inside A Multidisciplinary Grounded-Theory Project On Corruption In Ecuador: Navigating And Negotiating Challenges, Maria-Jose Rivera, Paúl Arias-Medina, Aracely Rojas-Lazo, Dolores Sucozhañay-Calle
The Qualitative Report
Studying day-to-day corruption raises hurdles for qualitative teams that cut across methodological, emotional, and ethical domains. Rather than presenting substantive findings on corruption, this article reports a reflexive analysis of those hurdles as experienced by an eight-member, multidisciplinary research team conducting the qualitative grounded-theory phase of the CIRCLE project in Ecuador - a context where discussing corruption often triggers mistrust, discomfort, and political sensitivities. Drawing on 33 meeting minutes and eight researcher stance memos, we applied Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis to team-generated documents to examine how challenges unfolded and were negotiated. We identified three interconnected domains of difficulty. …
Exploring Striking Moments Through Reflexive Inquiry: Case Study Of Action Learning Conversations, Mette Vinther Larsen, Sheila Mcnamee
Exploring Striking Moments Through Reflexive Inquiry: Case Study Of Action Learning Conversations, Mette Vinther Larsen, Sheila Mcnamee
The Qualitative Report
This paper explores how executive managers reflexively inquire into striking moments, understood as unanticipated instances that unsettle taken-for-granted assumptions, through Action Learning Conversations (ALC). ALC is a structured six-step dialogical process used at a Danish executive MBA program. Grounded in a relational-constructionist stance, the study responds to earlier empirical work showing that reflexivity could not be planned through curricular design but depends instead on relational and reflexive inquiries around unanticipated and striking moments. Using a qualitative, semi-structured case study design, the first author, who taught in the program and generated the data, traces two purposively selected cases; (1) centered on …

Cultivating Gen-Z As Cultural Heirs In The Indigenous Community Of Cireundeu, Sardin Sardin, Ade Romi Rosmia, Mohamad Hadi Ali Mutamam
The Qualitative Report
How do Indigenous leaders teach digital-native youth to value centuries-old traditions? This six-month ethnographic study examined cultural transmission in Cireundeu, an Indigenous Sundanese community in West Java, Indonesia. Existing studies often address Indigenous education and digital youth culture separately, with limited attention to leaders’ perspectives. Conducted from June to November 2024, the study drew on participant observation, interviews with 25 community members, six focus group discussions, and digital artifact analysis. Reflexive thematic analysis identified three interconnected patterns. First, leaders fostered cultural learning through graduated ceremonial participation. Second, elders practiced leader-orchestrated digital bricolage by adapting Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp for cultural …
From Epoché To Essence: A Methodological Chronicle Of Hybrid Phenomenological Data Analysis, Mulugeta Yayeh Worku
From Epoché To Essence: A Methodological Chronicle Of Hybrid Phenomenological Data Analysis, Mulugeta Yayeh Worku
The Qualitative Report
This article provides a personal and procedural account of the methodological journey undertaken for a doctoral study on the lived experiences of teacher educators practicing Social Reconstructionism in Ethiopian higher education. Navigating the complex terrain of phenomenological inquiry, the author details a Hybrid Phenomenological Model that integrates the procedural rigor of Clark Moustakas's descriptive method (e.g., horizonalization and imaginative variation) as a structural scaffold, with the interpretive attitude of hermeneutical phenomenology (Max van Manen, Martin Heidegger) as the guiding lens for meaning construction. The chronicle traces a five-phase data analysis process, from the initial challenge of epoché and immersion, through …
Reflexive Accounts Of Conducting Qualitative Interviews In The Mena Region, Chaima Mennai, Sana Alzahrani
Reflexive Accounts Of Conducting Qualitative Interviews In The Mena Region, Chaima Mennai, Sana Alzahrani
The Qualitative Report
This paper provides a reflexive account of our experiences conducting qualitative research in the contexts of two Arab countries, from our perspectives as researchers trained in a Western academic context. We explore the challenges and insights gained when recruiting and interviewing participants for qualitative Ph.D. projects within what is a predominantly quantitative research culture. Drawing on Walsh’s reflexive framework, we detail the issues that emerged during the recruitment and interview processes, identifying their potentially significant implications for Ph.D. candidates and early-career researchers who were trained in the West and are choosing to conduct research in contexts where the qualitative research …
Behind The Screen And Behind The Researcher: Reflexivity In Digital Mental Health Inquiry, Lesedi Kgatla
Behind The Screen And Behind The Researcher: Reflexivity In Digital Mental Health Inquiry, Lesedi Kgatla
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this paper is to reflexively examine how researcher positionality, theoretical commitments, methodological choices, and ethical decision-making shaped the interpretation of a previously conducted qualitative study on digital mental health activism. Drawing on my earlier digital ethnographic study of two South African mental health activists who used social media to disclose their experiences of depression, this paper presents a reflexive qualitative re-examination of the research process. The original study identified three themes: visibility through vulnerability, authenticity as activism, and community, connection, and psychoeducation. Rather than revisiting these as empirical findings, this paper examines how they were co-constructed through …

Strengths, Struggles, And Hope: Iranian University Faculty Experiences Through The Lens Of Appreciative Inquiry, Mohamad Reza Farangi, Mostafa Bahraman, Roya Movahed
The Qualitative Report
Although Appreciative Inquiry has been widely applied to organizational and educational development, little is known about how it can illuminate the experiences of university faculty in resource-constrained, non-Western higher education contexts. This qualitative study explored how Iranian university faculty members experience their professional lives through the lens of Appreciative Inquiry, with particular attention to the factors that sustain motivation, resilience, and professional purpose. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight assistant and associate professors from diverse academic disciplines, and the data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. The analysis generated eight interrelated themes: ethical academic identity, pride in scholarly …

Ritualidad, Memoria Y Cosmovisión: Ámbitos De La Tradición Sonora Entre Los Mayas Peninsulares, Juan Carrillo González
Journal of Maya Heritage

The Effects Of Pediatric Asthma On Daily Activities And Family Life In Cache Valley, Utah: Exploring Parental Perceptions Of Air Quality, Saeed Ahmad, Mehmet Soyer, Landon Lloyd, Mayu Mecham
Transforming Communities
Asthma is one of the main chronic health conditions affecting children living in Cache Valley, Utah particularly due to poor air quality during the winter season. It is very important to understand how families manage asthma both within and outside the household. Therefore, this research brief highlights how parents are managing pediatric asthma, and how asthma influences daily activities and family life. It is based on a qualitative study that extracted the data from 20 in-depth interviews with parents of asthmatic children. Participants were recruited through purposive snowball sampling. Data were collected through an interview guide that included some basic …
Konstruksi Wacana Pemberitaan Terbunuhnya Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Pada Kanal Berita Aljazeera, Muhammad Sidqon Siroj, Ibnu Hamad
Konstruksi Wacana Pemberitaan Terbunuhnya Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Pada Kanal Berita Aljazeera, Muhammad Sidqon Siroj, Ibnu Hamad
Multikultura
This study analyzes how the news about the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is represented on the Al Jazeera news channel, focusing on the construction of ideology and the representation of actors in the discourse. Khamenei was killed on 28 February 2026 in a US-Israeli airstrike, an event that triggered military escalation and a contest of narratives in the Middle East. This study fills a research gap, as no previous work has critically analyzed how the killing of an Iranian leader is represented in transnational Arab media. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method with Norman Fairclough’s …

Beyond Abstracts: Reflections On Locating Institutional Ethnography Studies In Bibliographic Databases And Navigating The Social Organization Of Knowledge, Sonya Hill
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
This article draws on the challenges encountered, discoveries made, and search strategies employed during a scoping review of Institutional Ethnography (IE). While informed by that review process, the article is not a scoping review and does not present review findings. Rather, it reflects on the practical difficulties of locating IE studies in bibliographic databases and offers guidance for researchers seeking to identify, retrieve, and enhance the visibility of IE scholarship. Grounded in my efforts to locate IE studies, the article uses those experiences as an entry point for reflecting on the social organization of knowledge and how database indexing, metadata, …
Interpretative Power And The Social Ontology Of Institutional Ethnography: A Review Of Órla Meadhbh Murray’S University Audit Cultures And Feminist Praxis: An Institutional Ethnography (2025), Breanna Kubat
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
This review critically assesses Órla Meadhbh Murray’s institutional ethnography (IE) of audit culture at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I center my review on Murray’s argument that interpretive power exists at the local level, and with this, opportunities, although limited, to influence how audit processes are performed at the institutional and departmental levels exist. I propose that Murray’s work provides a practical guide and example of what it means to conduct an IE that is grounded in IE’s social ontology.
Examining The Organization Of Student Work And Wellbeing In Higher Music Education, Kyle Zavitz, Liliana Araújo, Christine Guptill
Examining The Organization Of Student Work And Wellbeing In Higher Music Education, Kyle Zavitz, Liliana Araújo, Christine Guptill
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
This article investigates how music students’ work is institutionally coordinated within a higher school of music in Canada and how this shapes student health and wellbeing. This study reveals a problematic in students’ everyday experiences as the work required to succeed extends beyond what is formally recognized and made visible through institutional structures. Using Institutional Ethnography as the method of inquiry, we begin from the standpoint of music students, exploring the local and extra-local relations that coordinate what and how they do their work. Through interviews with students, faculty, and administrators, we trace students’ negotiation of contradictory discourses of ‘care’ …

Student (Mis)Placement In Swedish Special Education Provision Through Intellectual Disability Labeling: The Educator Standpoint, Liz Adams Lyngback, Enni Paul, Christina Headman
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
This institutional ethnography exploration begins with the standpoint of educators and focuses on the work related to ways students in Sweden exit the separate compulsory school for students with intellectual disability (CSID) and re-enter the regular compulsory school form through a student referral unit (SRU). By exploring what appears to puzzle the education system at the local level, this study contributes to a growing body of research on addressing multilingualism as a disability. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic data, the study moves beyond educators’ experience to a broader inquiry into the ruling relations that coordinate the creation of misplaced students. The …

Quantitative Comparison Of Writing Styles Among Indonesian Women Novelists: A Corpus Linguistics Approach, Vicno Triwira Dhika Jr, Ermanto Ermanto, Hasanuddin Ws, Ridha Hasnul Ulya, Aditya Rachman, Selfi Mahat Putri
Journal of International Women's Studies
Using the KORTARA Korpus Nusantara application, this study employed a quantitative corpus linguistics approach to examine the lexical density and average sentence length in nine novels by Indonesian women authors. The results indicated that each work differed greatly with respect to average sentence length and lexical density. When lexical density was analyzed through TTR, the results displayed a sufficiently wide range, suggesting the absence of a uniform women’s writing style in terms of vocabulary. For example, Dee Lestari’s Supernova: Roots (2002) achieved the highest TTR of 23.59%, which indicates an extensive and diverse vocabulary. Alaska Bay (2019) by Eka Aryani, …
Influence Of Violent Media On Adolescents, Alli Shattuck
Influence Of Violent Media On Adolescents, Alli Shattuck
Best Integrated Writing
This review article explores the relationship between violent media exposure and adolescent behavior. The research examines how repeated exposure to violent video games, movies, and social media may lead to aggressive behaviors. Symbolic Interactionism and Social Learning Theory are used to dissect the way adolescents engage with violent media. The neurological effects of this exposure are discussed alongside environmental influences such as parental supervision and social groups. Overall, the research establishes the complexities of media influence and suggests that violent media is one contributing factor to adolescent aggression rather than the sole cause.

Assessor Experiences In Cmmc Level 2 Certification Assessments: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of Role Expectations, Samuel Heuchert, John Hastings
Assessor Experiences In Cmmc Level 2 Certification Assessments: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of Role Expectations, Samuel Heuchert, John Hastings
Research & Publications
The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program requires that third-party assessments be conducted under a non-consultative model. The model is intended to ensure impartiality for organizations seeking certification. While this structure defines expectations for assessor behavior, assessor experiences and interpretations of these constraints remain underexamined. The study examines the lived experiences of CMMC-Certified Assessors and how they navigate role expectations within the non-consultative model. Using Role Conflict Theory as a guiding framework, the study applied Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to semi-structured interviews to explore how assessors make sense of their roles. The analysis identified experiential themes that describe how assessors construct …
