This article aims to expose the main governmental shifts in recent Americanhistory (1961-2000) by examining two programs: the Assistance to Families with DependentChildren (AFDC) and the Agency for International development (US-AID). Through the ex-ploration of primary and secondary sources, we analyse the production, organisation andcirculation of governmental practices in the realms of both domestic and foreign policy. In theAmerican context, practices of government typically revolve around freedom, efficiency mo-dels and individual responsibility. Throughout the analysis, we find that the general critiqueswhich have guided reforms and experiments in both areas converge around the same ele-ments. This testifies to the fact that …

Community Engagement and Collaboration

Casa Cornelia and scores of other public and private agencies rely on interpreters and translators for communicating with immigrants and their communities. Volunteer support overcomes language barriers and ensures that all clients have access to support services in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. Unfortunately, there is often a lack of qualified volunteer interpreters and translators available, most acutely for its Somali clients, which comprise the largest percentage of its Asylum Program’s caseload.

This paper considers possible solutions to the insufficient number of volunteers that are currently available to Casa Cornelia.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a national organization that was started back in 1970 by two mothers of sons with type 1 diabetes. Since its founding, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research around the world, including $9.9 million of research in San Diego. JDRF is a volunteer-driven organization with thousands of volunteers in locations worldwide. While JDRF is working hard to find a cure and improve the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes, it also has a goal of providing volunteer-led support programs to people with type 1 diabetes and their families. …

The purpose of the Washington County Caregiver Needs and Resources Assessment Survey was to discover the extent of knowledge of available services for caregivers of older individuals in Washington County, as well as their perceptions on the strengths and deficiencies of these services. Participants included a total of 98 survey respondents from a diverse range of professions, 81 percent of which have been or currently are care providers. The survey spans 39 communities in Washington County. The survey concluded that only 40 percent of respondents were knowledgeable about local services, but most knew of general services. Personal interviews exploring attitudes toward prescription drug abuse were completed by 17 residents over 18 years of age from Kentucky's Pike and Letcher counties. In respect to prescription drug abuse research nationwide, much research has been conducted in eastern Kentucky; however, there are seemingly few studies measuring the thoughts and feelings of community members toward the issue. There is little doubt that most American cities are currently troubled places because of massive economic shifts that have marked the last two decades. Charitable giving has consistently been seen as the lifeblood of communities around the United States (Backman and Smith 2000). The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between community composition and charitable giving. In this essay we explore how humans might face systemic collapse and/or entry into a dark age through forms of community resilience. We also note that nature, types of communities, and degrees of resilience differ in core, peripheral, and semiperipheral areas of the contemporary world-system. Core or global north or first world communities have all but disintegrated due to neoliberal policies. However, communities in peripheral and semiperipheral areas are more emergent, and more resilient. These areas are most likely to have or to creatively develop strategies to overcome global collapse. Scholars from various disciplines have explored the concept of multiculturalism from the perspectives of citizenship, recognition, representation, tokenism, constitutionalism, and other vantage points, with politics and education receiving most of the attention. I While many efforts have been made to explore these aspects of multiculturalism, its significance in poetry, particularly in poetry's composition and critique, has not been duly taken into account. Multicultural poetry designates a critical abstraction in which poetry is classified by relation to a communal culture, history, or customs.
