A Study Of The Latvian Exile-Immigrant Group In Kalamazoo, Henry George Halla Jul 1959

A Study Of The Latvian Exile-Immigrant Group In Kalamazoo, Henry George Halla

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Statement of the Problem

The general purpose of this study is to determine whether such families in the Latvian population of Kalamazoo as insist upon considering themselves exiles and refuse to accept their immigrant status are less acculturated and assimilated than are such families that accept their immigrant status regardless of the fact that their original emigration from Latvia was a departure into exile. Also this study proposes to determine what social, cultural, economic and other variables are associated with each of the two types of families.

Acculturation Among Mescalero Apache High School Students, Richard B. Scott May 1959

Acculturation Among Mescalero Apache High School Students, Richard B. Scott

Sociology ETDs

This thesis is a comparative study of the effects of the social environments of two types of schools on the acculturation process among Mescalero Apache Indian high school students. The two types of schools were an Indian boarding school, located some distance from the reservation, and integrated public schools, located in small town near the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation. The Indian school removes the children from the home environment and its influences but places them where the opportunity for social interaction with members of the "Anglo" society is greater.

English language skill was used not only as an index of …

The Existing Space In Nebraska Multistory Square Farm Houses, Jerre Lewis Withrow, Florence Mckinney Jan 1959

The Existing Space In Nebraska Multistory Square Farm Houses, Jerre Lewis Withrow, Florence Mckinney

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The present study was made by the University of Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station to determine the extent of similarity in the plans of one particular style of house, the square house of more than one story. Patterns of remodeling will be developed if the similarity of existing houses justifies such a project. The two story square house was chosen for study because it is one of the predominant old style houses still in existence throughout the North Central Region.

Family Organization In The Amazon Valley, Saul Benchimol Jan 1959

Family Organization In The Amazon Valley, Saul Benchimol

Sociology ETDs

The plan for this study of the Amazonian family was conceived when the author was living in the Amazon valley. His life in Manaus and other towns in the Amazon valley continuously brought to his attention the problems of family organization. These problems were brought into focus by studies made be Gilberto Freyre, Brazilian sociologist, who had made, thirty years previously, a study of the northeastern family. Later, other studies of the Brazilian family were made. They suggested a similar study of the family in the Amazon valley.
