Restrictive Covenants In Relation To Segregated Negro Housing In Detroit, Harold Black

The purpose of this thesis is to present a body of data concerning segregated housing facilities for Negroes in Detroit. It will attempt to cover both the historical development and the present situation of segregation. Considerable emphasis will be placed upon the typology and construction of restrictive covenants. The functions of various community organizations in the area of housing problems will also be examined. There will be some effort at prediction of future trends. The motivations and social psychological forces behind segregation will, of necessity, be given only cursory treatment.

This study has to do with the causes of racial friction as represented in the Detroit, Beaumont and Harlem outbreaks occurring in 1943. It will be pointed out that the incidental causes of such riots are symptoms leading to the exploratory job of finding the disease of "scapegoatism”. A survey of literature on the problem will bring about some understanding of the importance of racial prejudices and their relation to an international understanding. For many years New Mexico has been classified as a rural state. Although New Mexico is still predominately rural, a trend toward urbanization has appeared in recent years.

The study is concerned with this change of San José, [New Mexico] from a rural to urban community. Previous literature has postulated the hypothesis that urbanization produces a change in the total structure, or configuration, or a community's way of life. It is the Spanish-American family that this study will attempt to analyze. What changes has the family undergone in New Mexico? What changes have taken place in such phases of family life as mobility, parent-child relationships, adoption practices, family reciprocity, and home ownership?
