Dr. AMOAH Padmore Adusei

Religious and cultural values have been used as a yardstick to disregard the rights and freedoms of people in non-normative sexual relationships in many African countries. However, little is known about the extent to which this assertion is empirically buttressed by public opinion in the Kumasi Metropolis in Ghana. Employing in-depth interviews and a focus group discussion, this study sought public opinion on how religious and cultural precepts informed attitudes and perception on same-sex sexuality. Globalizacija I Ideologija U Evropskom Javnom Mnenju, Bojan Todosijević Jan 2015

Globalizacija I Ideologija U Evropskom Javnom Mnenju, Bojan Todosijević

Bojan Todosijević

The end of the XXth century witnessed a transformation of the view of international relations within broader ideological narratives of political Left and Right. The Left has become critical of globalization due to its association with economic liberalism. Resistance against the loss of cultural identity is increasing on the right, as well as the support for the globally expanding economic liberalism. What has remained unclear are the attitudes of the European citizens in this regard. This study analyzes the relationships between ideological self-identification and attitudes towards globalization. Despite certain variations, the results describe rightwing identifiers as more positive about globalization.

Using data from a 2013 telephone survey in Hong Kong (N = 850), we investigate how interpersonal and imagined contact with gays and lesbians affects attitudes toward gay people and gay rights. For all demographic groups, we found strong associations between interpersonal contact and favorable attitudes. Using a split ballot experiment, we found that asking respondents to imagine contact with a same-sex couple produced more favorable attitudes among respondents who had no prior …

Will The Followers Be Led? Where Union Members Stand On Immigration?, Roger Waldinger

Roger D Waldinger

Immigration is a source of cleavage on both sides of the usual ideological divides, as illustrated by its propensity to divide the American labor movement. This paper explores this question through a detailed analysis of a 2006 survey of national opinion, conducted by the Pew Centers, which provides the unusual opportunity to spotlight the opinions of union members. The results signal a warning light, as the views of union members turn out to be very different from those advanced by their leaders.
