Two of the most important socioeconomic changes over the last few decades are the massive influx of women into the workforce and the remarkable progress that they have made in educational attainment. In spite of these developments, women still earn less than men. Why is it the case?

Resolving Inner Cultural Conflicts Toward Education In Pastoral East Africa: A Grounded Theory Study, Timothy A. Keiper, Janvier Rugira

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explain the perceptions of semi - nomadic pastoralists in East Africa, who self - identified as having the characteristics of the most vulnerable, and who were educationally successful. This study identified motivating factors that contributed to resiliency while in the pursuit of an education. Findings suggest that even though students from this background utilize these motivating factors they are still faced with inner cultural tensions that can be insurmountable. Across the United States, researchers and youth workers alike have identified an increasing number of civically engaged youth who are organizing to improve their communities and schools. By taking an action-oriented approach, these youth are speaking back to the notion that they are uninvolved in society. This interview-based study explores the meaning-making experiences of youth organizers at Boston’s Hyde Square Task Force (HSTF) to better understand how they engage. Findings suggest that HSTF is engaging two broad groups of youth by focusing on both their personal development and their sense of community awareness. The study introduces an organizing model of …
