Over the last 10 years, there has been a resurgence in urban agriculture in an effort for Black communities to reclaim autonomy over food sources and diets and a way to empower them to engage once again in the agricultural industry. This reconnecting builds collective agency and community resilience (CACR) (White, 2019). The benefits of urban agriculture within Black communities bring spiritual, mental, and physical wellness to the forefront, empowering upward mobility and encouraging an autonomous revenue structure. Self-procurement strategies such as gardening, hunting, and wild harvesting are often overlooked in the development of local and regional food systems because the informal exchanges of these foods do not contribute to traditional financial impacts (McEntee 2011). Research conducted between 2017-2018 in the Missouri Ozarks partnered with wild harvesters and used narrative inquiry and critical reflection to explore the practice of wild harvesting, motivations for food access strategies, and the comprehensive wealth impacts of wild harvesting in the region. The Snyder Leadership Legacy Fellowship is a leadership and professional development program for students in their final year at Kansas State. One component of the Fellowship is that students serve as volunteer coaches for Manhattan Parks and Rec youth sports teams in the fall. Engaging with and mentoring youth gives students the opportunity to not only seek growth in the youth they serve, but also develop their own leadership skills. Partnerships between universities and community organizations contribute to sustainable community development by creating networks of resources that may not otherwise exist among university faculty, students and community members. Service learning serves as a vessel for connecting and strengthening these resources; however, barriers within universities limit effective practice. University faculty members often cite time constraints, coordination challenges, and lack of support as deterrents to the incorporation of service learning projects in their courses. To overcome such barriers, universities can implement institutional structures and programs that facilitate community-engaged learning. Service learning creates a space for transformative learning to occur, employing a framework that unites practice and theory with reflection. Service learning that gives students a sense of responsibility for outcomes and is perceived as significant enhances student efficacy. This integrative work meaningfully connects students to a deeper understanding of academia, the community, and personal identity. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has a Service Learning Academy (SLA) that facilitates service learning projects. On February 11, 2019, the National Immigrant Justice Center reported that 49,000 people were being detained in American detention facilities. This report highlights the process of Central American families and unaccompanied minors beginning to apply for asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. In my study, I aim to investigate how child and family detention, past and present asylum policies, and treatment of migrants at the border suggest a shift in immigration policy in the Obama and Trump Administrations. This research seeks to better describe and understand rural and urban food deserts. Previous research on food deserts suggests that, as a result of discriminating structural social mechanisms like redlining and neighborhood disinvestment within large metro areas in the U.S., poor and black individuals and households tend to be at a distinct advantage in terms of healthy food accessibility and availability (Miller et al. 2015). Empirical civic engagement research based in a South American context. Participants included adult learner populations engaged in revolutionary protests that opposed private for-profit education in Chile. Community colleges serve diverse populations including LGB emerging adults who are attempting to find their place within society. Through a thematic analysis of narrative interviews and a focus group we found on one, rural campus there is a culture of isolation, which may limit individuals growth both personally and academically.
