Women And The Second Estate In 16th Century Zambezia: Gendered Powers, A 'Puppet' African Queen And Succession In Vakaranga Society, 1500–1700, George G. Levin

Master's Theses

Women in vaKaranga society of the 15th to 17th centuries have been portrayed as oppressed by an "extremely patriarchal" system, but the reality, while still fitting the simple classification of a 'patriarchal' monarchy, indicates quite a bit more negotiation of gendered powers than women, as a class, experienced in the Mediterranean or East Asia. The vaKaranga were the architects of Great Zimbabwe, the capital of a growing state, colonizing their cousins of the Zambezi river, which their Kusi-Mashariki Bantu forefathers had traversed southward a millennium before. Civil war had (apparently) split one nation into two states, Mutapa (Monomotapa) and Khami …

Social Sciences

Two hundred and one students from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo completed a one page survey regarding their role models and expectations for life after graduation in order to gain insight on the gender differences that are present within the student community. The results were analyzed using cross tabulations in IBM SPSS and supported the hypotheses (1) traditional gender roles, such as men as the provider and women as the domestic caretaker, will be reflected by survey respondents, and (2) due to a lack of female role models for women in professional fields, women are less likely than …

I will be creating multiple maps which will be looking individually at different types of crime, such as violent crimes, burglary and theft, assault and battery, sex …

The Theory Of Continuity: An Alternate Analysis And Supporting Experiment On The Expressed Modes Of Human Interaction, Michael J. Vogel Jun 2013

The Theory Of Continuity: An Alternate Analysis And Supporting Experiment On The Expressed Modes Of Human Interaction, Michael J. Vogel

Social Sciences

The methods currently used to survey, analyze and understand human relationships and interactivity fail to grasp the complexity and intricacy brought forth by a globalized, cohesive and communicative society. The conventional sociometric schools of social-group analysis are not fully equipped to understand the depth and complexity of interpersonal relations, losing out on the intricacies that exist between acquaintanceships, friendships, romances, and everything in between. This in mind, I have crafted and designed a new paradigmatic system for understanding and working with human relationships: the theory of Continuity. Employing a system of mutually-exchanged socio-emotive currency, Continuital theory seeks to quantify the …

An Examination Of Summer Bridge Programs For First-Generation College Students, Emily Christine Otewalt Mar 2013

An Examination Of Summer Bridge Programs For First-Generation College Students, Emily Christine Otewalt

Psychology and Child Development

During the last fifty years, nearly half of all students who entered a two- or four-year university withdrew without obtaining a degree. Students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnic minority students, and students who were the first in their family to attend college were particularly vulnerable to this attrition. The following senior project examines current research on the backgrounds and attrition rates of first-generation college students, how "Summer Bridge Programs" aim to assist these students, and where shortcoming exist in current "Summer Bridge Program" assessments.

Elementary School Gardens And The Community, Christine Moon, Rachel Spinelli Jan 2013

Elementary School Gardens And The Community, Christine Moon, Rachel Spinelli

Social Sciences

This project will focus on the relationship of school garden initiative in connection with the socioeconomic status of the community. We will be examining five schools: Pacheco Elementary School (in San Luis Obispo) as our model school, two lower socioeconomic schools, and two upper socioeconomic schools. Since Pacheco has families with both low and high socioeconomic statuses, we will use it as our base. We will compare and contrast the four schools to Pacheco. We hope to explore implications of socioeconomic factors on the success of school garden projects. Our main research questions are: does socioeconomic status have an effect …
