College 101: Sharing Experiences And Stories For Transformative Change, Christine Robinson

College 101 is powerful Pre-College Opportunity Program (PCoP) designed to expose at-risk high school students to the benefits of post-secondary education, to motivate them to stay in school, and to help them envision a future that includes post-secondary education. The unique features of College 101 include that it is grounded in the pedagogical approach of Real Talk (Hernandez, 2015), and that it is led mainly by College Positive Volunteers (CPVs). Integrating Social Emotional Skill Development Throughout College Access Program Activities: A Profile Of The Princeton University Preparatory Program, Catherine M. Millett, Marisol J. C. Kevelson

In a prior study we demonstrated that college access program participants have positive views of the extent to which the program supports the development of their social and emotional skills and related college help-seeking behaviors in college. In this follow-up study, we explore the extent to which participant views vary by length of participation in the program in high school (i.e., dosage) and the extent to which alumni enrolled in college differ from college graduate alumni in their perceptions of the influences of the college access program. Undocumented college students face multiple barriers. This case study explores how a group of undocumented Latino/a students maintained a peer network. Using Stanton-Salazar's frameworks of empowerment agents, I discuss how students created a space on campus and navigated internal tensions threatening solidarity, including inclusion/exclusion, competition/support, and personal support/political engagement.

Nationally, the education pipeline is not preparing enough students for success and high school dropout rates in the nation’s urban areas are alarming. This mixed methods (QUAN→qual) empirical study examines the influence of parent involvement on the academic success of 1,774 GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) students matched to their parents in 21 high schools in Chicago. The results of the regression analyses were presented to focus groups composed of GEAR UP parents and staff to assist in making meaning of the data and to gain deeper insight and understanding of the results. The contemporary college or university campus is a complex and dynamic environment that requires students to navigate myriad institutional processes. College preparedness is not simply a matter of being academically ready for postsecondary-level work, but also requires that students have a procedural knowledge of other university processes - what we define herein as "college knowledge." This article presents that results of an evaluation of a college preparation program that focuses on college knowledge and provides a road map for designing an effective college knowledge program.

Group presentations are the common ways to communicate information about financial aid to high school students. It’S About Time: Temporal Dimensions Of College Preparation Programs, William Tierney, Ronald Hallett, Kristan Venegas

After-school education programs for at-risk students are often implemented to increase academic performance and college readiness. This article explores the terms "out-of-school" and "after-school" related to college preparation programs and suggests that these programs should consider attendance, participation and intensity to impact a student's success in college. This article concludes with four practical steps to improve the structural design of after-school programs concerned about college preparation.
