Appraisal-Tendency Framework And Gender: A Moderator In The Emotions And Judgement Process, Sarah Tucker, Alexander T. Jackson, Satoris Howes, Kaitlyn Berry

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

The study aims to clarify and understand the role that gender has on perceptions of justice through placement of blame and emotion. The Appraisal Tendency Framework explains how emotion impacts judgements, and the fairness theory explores how blame placement affects perceptions of justice. This research explores the impact of gender on both models. This study will utilize a 2 (emotional induction) x 2 (gender of actor) design. In the emotional induction portion, participants will view clips from movies to induce either sadness or anger. Following the video clip, all participants will be asked to write about a time they either …

Child Abuse And School Performance, Rachel M. Smith May 2020

Child Abuse And School Performance, Rachel M. Smith

Scholars Day Conference

Data reports that child abuse impacts a large number of children. Because of this, a child's learning experience can be negatively impacted. Even though the percentage might be relatively small, when looking at the collective number on a national level, it means that a large population of children are affected.

Mass Incarceration & Hiv Infection, Naya Young May 2020

Mass Incarceration & Hiv Infection, Naya Young

Scholars Day Conference

HIV is a critical problem among the incarcerated population. As of 2014, African Americans disproportionately made up 2.3 million of the 6.8 million correctional population. People of the correctional population are more susceptible to a decrease of CD4 cells (cells that kill the HIV virus). African Americans are at an elevated risk of HIV vs. everyone else in the correctional population.

How Social Media Affect College Students' Relationships, De'ja Smiley May 2020

How Social Media Affect College Students' Relationships, De'ja Smiley

Scholars Day Conference

Technology continues to advance, and so does social networking. The more social networking advances the less face to face interactions are held and the more conversations through electronic screens and apps are held. There are several factors contributing to the changes in communication amongst college students who generally already spend a large amount of time using technology for academic purposes.

Poverty In The Third World: High Population Birth Rates, Jammie Cush May 2020

Poverty In The Third World: High Population Birth Rates, Jammie Cush

Scholars Day Conference

Poverty can be defined as the state of being extremely poor. Nearly one half of the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day. Furthermore, more than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty, living on less than $1.25 a day. There have been numerous efforts from major Non-Governmental Organizations and International Governmental Organizations such as the United Nations, who attempted to implement The Millennium Development Goal in the 1990s, which was a goal that consisted of 8 large objectives. One goal was the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. The UN set …

This research aims to provide clarity to Title IX offices at the University to aid in successfully adapting their program to the needs of the …

You Don’T Need A Weatherman To Know Which Way The Wind Blows: The Prison Break Of Timothy Leary, Phoebe N. Holman Apr 2020

You Don’T Need A Weatherman To Know Which Way The Wind Blows: The Prison Break Of Timothy Leary, Phoebe N. Holman

Young Historians Conference

This paper examines the revolutionary merit of the Weather Underground Organization’s prison break of LSD guru Timothy Leary. Was Leary truly an activist willing to risk everything to introduce the public to the healing powers of psychedelics? Or was he an unprofessional mad scientist using his students to further his own agenda? It also provides an explanation of how the WUO and other anti-war organizations like it brought the United States to the brink of a massive societal shift—and then disappeared.

Nixon's Southern Strategy: An Examination Of The Role Of Race In The 1968 And 1972 Presidential Campaigns, Ella Feathers

Young Historians Conference

This paper explores the pivotal role of race in the South's political switch. In 1968, Nixon won the Presidential Election with very slim margins. Four years later, with when running for his second term, he won all the vast majority of the vote, including those from Southern states. By catering to Southern voters on issues such as welfare, desegregation, and crime, Nixon was able to gain Southern support, and secure a new base for the Republican party.

The Spies That Founded America: How The War For Independence Revolutionized American Espionage, Masaki Lew Apr 2020

The Spies That Founded America: How The War For Independence Revolutionized American Espionage, Masaki Lew

Young Historians Conference

Prior to the American Revolutionary War (1775-1883), tensions rose as American colonial smugglers circumvented British taxes. By the onset of the conflict, Continental General George Washington faced a daunting British military invasion. Washington's strategy to outmaneuver and tire enemy forces necessitated a way to anticipate incoming attacks. Thus, he looked to espionage, but found few colonists with professional experience. So who would have the deceptive skills to fulfill the task? An exploration of Washington’s dilemma provides compelling evidence explaining how the colonial smugglers who started the war became the Patriot spies who ended it.

Social, Scientific, Litigious: The Birth Of A Queer Americanism, Claire M. Fennell Apr 2020

Social, Scientific, Litigious: The Birth Of A Queer Americanism, Claire M. Fennell

Young Historians Conference

The queer rights movement is often assumed to have advanced because of the collateral benefit of other social rights movements occurring around the same time, in the 1950s and 60s. However, the inception of an organized queer rights movement did not happen in line with any progressive time in United States public thought. In reality, the movement began at a time when America was at its least forward-thinking, during the Cold War. It was not the times becoming more progressive, but rather the shift in the model of oppression the queer community faced which allowed for the advent of an …

280— Exploring The Geographic Distribution Of Childbed Fever Deaths In Mid-19th Century Rochester, Ny, Meaghan Parks Apr 2020

280— Exploring The Geographic Distribution Of Childbed Fever Deaths In Mid-19th Century Rochester, Ny, Meaghan Parks

GREAT Day Posters

Childbed fever, formally called puerperal fever or puerperal septicemia, is an infection typically contracted by women after childbirth. Historically, childbed fever was a serious threat to maternal health. Childbed fever is caused by exposure of open wounds or abrasions, which are common after giving birth, to group A and B Streptococcal bacteria. Ignaz Semmelweis discovered that hand washing using a chlorinated solution reduced cases of childbed fever in 1847. This project reviews the instances of death from childbed fever in Rochester, New York from 1837-1860 and later from 1907-1919 and attempts to determine which areas of the city had the …

The Effect Of Volunteering On Stress Hormone Levels Of Graduate Student Volunteers, Kyra Valovick, Kelsey Swegle

2020 Virtual Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The purpose of this presentation is to set up methods for a long-term study using graduate students in the Speech Pathology graduate program at Longwood University. Previous studies have shown that levels of stress hormones, cortisol and alpha-amylase, decrease after a volunteering activity. In this study, we aim to replicate those results by taking saliva samples from graduate students who are volunteering with disabled children at a local therapeutic barn, Heartland Horse Heroes. From those samples, we will measure levels of cortisol, alpha-amylase, and DHEA, a hormone measuring resistance. We expect to see a decrease in cortisol and alpha-amylase and …

The Relationship Between Age And Gender And Its Effect On Intergenerational Patterns Of Incarceration, Sominishia Wright Apr 2020

The Relationship Between Age And Gender And Its Effect On Intergenerational Patterns Of Incarceration, Sominishia Wright

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Mass incarceration has been a dominant concern within the criminal justice system since the 1970s. Criminologists and other researchers have looked at the effects crime has on the steadily increasing incarceration rate but to little avail. Intergenerational patterns of incarceration further oppress minority and low-income communities. Although researchers have been able to identify some forms of causation, much more research needs to be done to understand why certain people, according to race, age, gender, and socioeconomic status, are more likely to be incarcerated, arrested, and convicted than others. Current research identifies deviant parents and paternal incarceration as factors that increase …

Impacts Of Intersectionality In The Lgbtqiap+ Community, Sydney Inger Apr 2020

Impacts Of Intersectionality In The Lgbtqiap+ Community, Sydney Inger

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Intersectionality plays an integral role in how a family or society reacts to a youth’s identification within the LGBTQIAP+ community and their chances of overcoming societal challenges that may follow. The intersections of geographic location and religion are predictive of how accepting a family is toward an LGBTIAP+ child, but this is not correlated with every case. When a family is unaccepting, youth can find themselves running away, homeless, in the foster care system, or incarcerated. Beyond continuous rejection at home and in the community, youth are left with challenges finding accepting foster families and applying for jobs and homes …

Biophilia In Everyday Life, Olivia Duke Apr 2020

Biophilia In Everyday Life, Olivia Duke

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Mindfulness is an important practice in daily life that many have forgotten in our fast-paced consumerist society. When we are advised to be mindful, we tend in think that we don’t have the time or money for it – but really it involves simple and inexpensive choices. I found my own inspiration through Biophilia, a movement encouraging the reintegration of nature into daily life. Simply taking a moment to be grounded in your surroundings can drastically boost your mood. Biophilia encourages healthy living of both body and mind. Taking care of ourselves as well as our natural environment is vital …

Internalized Stigmatization And Rejection Anxiety As Mediators Between Self-Monitoring And Transgender Identity Concealment, Sarah Carlton Apr 2020

Internalized Stigmatization And Rejection Anxiety As Mediators Between Self-Monitoring And Transgender Identity Concealment, Sarah Carlton

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

High self-monitors are more motivated and able than low self-monitors to conceal parts of their identity (Fuglestad & Snyder, 2010). Gay and lesbian individuals will sometimes conceal their identity due to rejection anxiety and internalized stigmatization (Mohr & Fassinger, 2003; Quinn & Earnshaw, 2013). However, these phenomena have yet to be studied for transgender individuals. The purpose of this study is to explore how self-monitoring may predict identity concealment in transgender individuals. Using MTurk, we will sample 100 transgender women and 100 transgender men. Participants will complete the 25-item Self-Monitoring Scale (Snyder, 1974) as well as modified versions of the …

Lgbtq+ Journeys And Femininity, Masculinity Throughout Puberty: A Thematic Analysis Of Netflix's Big Mouth, Carter Montgomery

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Media is socially constructed and those who create the message, shape the beliefs and principles that are displayed. The viewers do not merely accept the representations at face value; they consume it, interpret and analyze the validity of it and then express their thoughts on what they see. Media is an influential tool for challenging, maintaining, and expanding consumer’s understanding of the world around them, playing a key role in shaping people’s identities, especially gender and sexuality. It’s important to be able to analyze media to critically think about the worlds that are presented to us that represent the world …

An Evaluation Of Nursing Student Preparedness To Serve The Lgbtq+ Community, Collin Mullis Apr 2020

An Evaluation Of Nursing Student Preparedness To Serve The Lgbtq+ Community, Collin Mullis

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Existing literature on LGBTQ+ health reveals differences in mental and physical health outcomes and differences in health care utilization of LGBTQ+ people compared to non-LGBTQ+ people. While these differences require the urgent attention of medical professionals, research suggests that health care practitioners, generally, are underprepared to serve LGBTQ+ clients and contribute to underutilization of health care services through overt and covert homophobia and transphobia.

Because of their visibility in health care, this project specifically explores nursing students’ preparedness to serve LGBTQ+ clients. In this context, preparedness is defined as having knowledge of LGBTQ+ health topics, the development of relevant clinical …

Religious Conflict And Sexual Identity Among Lgbt Adults, Alana N. Innerbichler Apr 2020

Religious Conflict And Sexual Identity Among Lgbt Adults, Alana N. Innerbichler

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

The LGBT community is considered a contentious topic of conversation among various religious denominations. This research analyzes conflict between sexual identity and religious beliefs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) adults. Despite retrospective studies investigating attitudes towards same-sex relations, including negative experiences within religious institutions and facets of integrating diverse sexual identities, the quantitative and qualitative data lacks the perspective of LGBT individuals. This study augments existing literature by utilizing data conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2013. Preliminary findings show that despite the abuse LGBT individuals endure during the “coming out process”, most LGBT individuals do not …

Evaluating The Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day Program, Karinna A. Rodriguez Bs, Karin Rogers Bs, Zoe I. Kennedy, Alexandra Schonning Phd, Susan Perez Phd

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

It is well-documented that women in the United States are underrepresented in STEM fields and engineering in particular. This results in the underutilization of the available range of human resources and diverse problem-solving capacity in addressing the types of problems engineers are trained to solve. The lack of female representation in STEM fields may be associated with gender stereotypes and cultural practices that steer women away from engineering, a process that begins in childhood. This study examined the impact of one type of outreach, a 1-day opportunity for young girls in grades 1 through 5 to learn about and get …

"A State Sponsored System Of Segregation": Examining The Contemporary Impact Of Redlining, Caroline Howard Apr 2020

"A State Sponsored System Of Segregation": Examining The Contemporary Impact Of Redlining, Caroline Howard

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

The west side of downtown Jacksonville is home to historically black neighborhoods which for over a century were economically thriving. However, if you were to visit those areas today you would be greeted by vacant lots, abandoned buildings and a large homeless population. In the 1930’s predominantly black neighborhoods of Jacksonville were marked as hazardous areas unfit for loans: a process known as redlining. The Economic Innovation Group’s Distressed Community Index will be analyzed to determine if there is a correlation between redlining and the disproportionate economic hardship of historically black areas to predominantly white areas of Jacksonville. Utilizing GIS …

Exploring Communal And Gendered Influences On Sexual Health Practices, Courtney Olds, Luke Lovelady, Emery Hanson, Elizabeth R. Brown

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

In the U.S., 10% of female college students who have an unplanned pregnancy, drop out (UPFO, 2016). Additionally, young adults (15-24) account for half of the new STI’s (CDC, 2017). Previous research has established communal (other-oriented) motivation is positively associated with factors that predict safe sex practices (e.g., condom use intentions) (Phillips et al., 2019). Conversely, gender norms (societal expectations affiliated with gender) are negatively associated with factors that predict safe sex practices (e.g., partner communication and self-efficacy). For instance, although, women who report higher self-efficacy are more likely to engage in partner communication, women who rely on traditional gender …

Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy, Lori Ferguson, Ross Mcdonough Apr 2020

Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy, Lori Ferguson, Ross Mcdonough

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Beginning in the early 1900s, research into Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) showed promising results. After psychedelics were made illegal in the early 1970s they went largely underground. Psychedelic research resumed in the 1990s and the research shows great promise. Unlike traditional antidepressants that only manage symptoms and cause long term side effects, psychedelics could possibly be a cure with no side effects once the drug has worn off. Treatment often includes preparatory therapy sessions before, a session which includes the use of a psychedelic, and integrative therapy sessions after. Right now the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is the …

Relationship Satisfaction & Diet: Exploring The Mechanisms Through Which Intimate Relationships Influence Physical Health, Lindsey Robinson, Dylan Hillock, Dr. Josh Novak Apr 2020

Relationship Satisfaction & Diet: Exploring The Mechanisms Through Which Intimate Relationships Influence Physical Health, Lindsey Robinson, Dylan Hillock, Dr. Josh Novak

Southeastern Council on Family Relations Conference

Understanding how intimate relationships influence physical health has been an important topic of focus; however, research remains unclear on the mechanisms through which this influence occurs. The purpose of this study was to examine how relationship satisfaction relates to diet quality, through mental health (depression and anxiety) and diet self-efficacy. Using a dyadic mediation model with a sample of 234 heterosexual couples, researchers found that women's higher relationship satisfaction was associated with better diet through lower depression and higher diet self-efficacy. Results revealed the same association between women's relationship satisfaction and diet through lower anxiety. Interestingly, rather than mediation through …

Identity Development In The Gap: Emerging Adults' Experiences In Structured Gap Year Programs, Kara L. Peterson Apr 2020

Identity Development In The Gap: Emerging Adults' Experiences In Structured Gap Year Programs, Kara L. Peterson

Southeastern Council on Family Relations Conference

Identity development primarily occurs the most throughout the adolescent and emerging adulthood years (Arnett, 2000), which can be facilitated through gap years. Previous research has shown gap years to be beneficial (Heath, 2007; King, 2010; O’Shea, 2014). However, research has not addressed the personal perspective of gap year alumni on their own identity formation through structured gap year programs. This qualitative, phenomenological study sought to explore the impact of structured gap years on emerging adults’ identity development as well as identify the types of experiences that were effective for personal growth. The study examined the experiences of 15 participants, both …
