The Pleasure And Participation Sports Model As Reflected Through An Advanced Physical Education Course, Rebecca R Buchanan
The Pleasure And Participation Sports Model As Reflected Through An Advanced Physical Education Course, Rebecca R Buchanan
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore how the pleasure and participation sports model as described by Coakley (2009) was reflected through an Advanced Physical Education course. This included an analysis examining whether the model was supported, expanded, or refuted based on characteristics of the model emphasizing (a) democratic leadership, (b) inclusive participation, and (c) the use of cooperation and competition with others to develop and test skills in a healthy and enjoyable context.
A single-site, exploratory, qualitative case study design provided the opportunity to investigate the phenomenon under exploration. A particular Advanced Physical Education course was purposefully selected …
Decolonial Multiculturalism And Local-Global Contexts: A Postcritical Feminist Bricolage For Developing New Praxes In Education, Katharine Matthaei Sprecher
Decolonial Multiculturalism And Local-Global Contexts: A Postcritical Feminist Bricolage For Developing New Praxes In Education, Katharine Matthaei Sprecher
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents a conceptual bricolage that explores complex, reflexive, and interrelated dimensions of educational praxes. My work is grounded in the assertion that the ever-changing, local-global nature of contemporary societies requires new approaches to curricula, pedagogies, policies, and practices in U.S. schools to meet the challenges and opportunities of a global era. Presenting my research and findings as four articles, I begin with a dialectical analysis of theoretical and pedagogical literatures to develop an adaptable framework for decolonial multicultural education. In Article 1, I demonstrate how this framework synergizes aspects of social reconstructionist and critical multicultural, global, and …
The Role Of "Sense Of Place:" A Theoretical Framework To Aid Urban Forest Policy Decision-Making, Kimberly Louise Davis
The Role Of "Sense Of Place:" A Theoretical Framework To Aid Urban Forest Policy Decision-Making, Kimberly Louise Davis
Doctoral Dissertations
Urban forest management is being increasingly recognized as a viable policy vehicle for improving the overall quality of life in urban regions, promoting economic well-being as well as mitigating some of the environmental impacts of urbanization. As a complex system of ecological merit, the urban forest is ultimately dependent upon community-directed efforts to protect and maintain its health, largely through tree ordinances. An understanding of how values and other social factors trigger public concern for and management of the local urban forest is important because of ramifications of community urban forestry policy on regional ecosystem functional capacity. This dissertation investigates …
Women And The Environment: Mediating And Moderating Effects Of Gender And Demographic Characteristics Of Environmental Concern, Carmel Elizabeth Price
Women And The Environment: Mediating And Moderating Effects Of Gender And Demographic Characteristics Of Environmental Concern, Carmel Elizabeth Price
Doctoral Dissertations
In this study I examine the relationship between environmental attitudes and gender. First, I explore variations across previous studies to determine patterns regarding gender differences in levels of environmental concern. Second, I look at the mediating effects of gender and several socio-demographic characteristics (age, race, class, education, political orientation, residence, martial status, number of children, religious identification, and scientific knowledge) on a variety of measures of environmental concern to assess the extent to which gender operates through other variables as it predicts levels of environmental concern. Third, I look at the moderating effects of gender on the same list of …
“Everything Was Different”: An Existential Phenomenological Investigation Of Us Professional Basketball Players’ Experiences Overseas, Rainer Josef Meisterjahn
“Everything Was Different”: An Existential Phenomenological Investigation Of Us Professional Basketball Players’ Experiences Overseas, Rainer Josef Meisterjahn
Doctoral Dissertations
Globalization in the sports world is a phenomenon that has received considerable attention in the sport studies literature (Maguire, 1994, 2004). A significant aspect of globalization is labor migration in professional sports, which has been investigated extensively in recent years (e.g., Magee & Sugden, 2002; Takahashi & Horne, 2006). Basketball is one sport that has been discussed in this context (Falcous & Maguire, 2005). The sports encounters of athletes in foreign cultures are often diverse and entail differing pressures, rewards, and interdependencies (Falcous & Maguire, 2005). Players may deal with significant stressors such as performance expectations as is typical of …
Unto The Least Of These: The Pentecostal Church And Social Ministry, Stacey U Tucker
Unto The Least Of These: The Pentecostal Church And Social Ministry, Stacey U Tucker
Doctoral Dissertations
This project explores the relationship of Pentecostal churches in the U.S. to social ministry. Taken from the results of multivariate logistic regression and likelihood ratio tests utilizing the National Congregations Study , a nationally representative sample of US congregations, I found that Pentecostal congregations are statistically less likely to participate in social ministry than non-Pentecostal Christian congregations. Through chi-square analyses, I also found Pentecostal churches to be less likely than non-Pentecostal Conservative congregations to participate in social ministry. Through a series of interviews and observations of five Pentecostal Assemblies of God churches in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area, assessments were …
