The Failure Of Neoliberal Globalization And The End Of Empire: Neoliberalism, Imperialism, And The Rise Of The Anti-Globalization Movement, Martin Orr
Martin Orr
This article offers a critical analysis of the development and dissolution of neoliberalism and neoconservatism, with emphasis on the role of popular resistance in bringing about the collapse of both forms of imperial domination. Responding to the brutal realities of the post-Cold War "new world order," opposition to neoliberal globalization grew over the 1990s, culminating in the protests against the 1999 meetings of the World Trade Organization in Seattle. Having successfully blocked the machinations of the leading capitalist powers for world domination, Seattle served as a model for a series of worldwide protests and demonstrations that, despite state repression and …
The Paradigmatic Underpinnings And The Categorical Structure Of Sociology, 1973-1994: An Explanation For And Documentation Of Metatheoretical Shift, Martin Orr
Martin Orr
This contribution to the sociology of sociology offers an empirical evaluation of a comprehensive class-analytic explanation for structured and temporal intellectual diversity in sociological theory and analysis. In an articulation of the arguments of Chertok (1990) and Szymanski (1985), it is suggested that the structured diversity of the discipline is a function of class structure, and that "metatheoretical shifts" — systematic changes in the paradigmatic underpinnings and the categorical structure of sociological theories and analyses — are a function of the vitality of social movements. A quantitative analysis of the conceptual content of the Sociological Abstracts on CD-ROM ("Sociofile") documents …

Is Physical Activity Leisure Or Work? Exploring The Leisure-Tourism-Physical Activity Relationship With Holidaymakers On Rottnest Island, Ruth Sibson, Pascal Scherrer, Maria Ryan, Nadine Henley, Lynnaire Sheridan
Maria M Ryan
To help overcome preventable health problems in the developed world, the 'active living' concept seeks to stimulate people's physical activity in every day environments. This study contributes to the understanding of the leisure-tourism-physical activity relationship by investigating the self-reported physical activity of holiday makers on Rottnest Island, Western Australia, compared to their home environment. The quantitative analysis of 41 participant interviews on behaviour, motivation and constraints revealed that physical activity was seen as leisure on Rottnest but work at home. A uniquely attractive and easily accessible environment and positive social interactions were key contributors to participation in physical activity.

Families As They Really Are, Virginia Rutter
Families As They Really Are, Virginia Rutter
Virginia Rutter
A fresh collection of original essays by leading scholars that focuses on how families operate in everyday life: what they are, how they work, and why they matter. Families as They Really Are goes to the heart of the family values debate by reframing the question about families from “Are they breaking down?” to “Where are they going, how, and why?” Essays in the book are not reprints; you won’t find them anywhere else. Each article is a new contribution to the research and theory about families, drawn from an interdisciplinary community of experts. The four parts of Families as …

China's Agrarian Reform And The Privatization Of Land: A Contrarian View , Qian (Forrest) Zhang, John Andrew Donaldson
China's Agrarian Reform And The Privatization Of Land: A Contrarian View , Qian (Forrest) Zhang, John Andrew Donaldson
John Donaldson
Many reporters and scholars outside China advocate the privatization of land ownership in China as a necessary step for the transformation of China's agriculture system into a modern, large-scale, market-oriented and technology-intensive one. Chinese scholars advocating land privatization, for their part, typically argue that land privatization would better protect farmers’ rights and interests. We present a contrarian view to these calls for land privatization. Under China's current system of collective land ownership and individualized land use rights, agriculture has modernized rapidly in China in a way that has avoided privatization's many downsides. Land privatization, by contrast, would only exacerbate class …
Comparing Local Models Of Agrarian Transition In China, Qian Forrest Zhang
Comparing Local Models Of Agrarian Transition In China, Qian Forrest Zhang
Qian Forrest ZHANG
The development of markets and the penetration of capital into agriculture have started the agrarian transition in rural China, which is transforming smallholding, household-based agriculture into various forms of capitalistic production. This again raises in a new historical and social context the long-debated question in the agrarian transition literature: Can family farms survive the onslaught of capitalist agriculture based on wage labor and what shapes the confrontation between family farms and agro-capital? I argue that it is the local political economy—rather than some natural obstacles in agriculture to the penetration of capitalism—that shapes this confrontation and gives rise to a …

Journalism In A Pr World, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.
Journalism In A Pr World, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.
Michael I Niman Ph.D.
Mike Niman discusses the future of journalism in a PR-dominated communication environment. In particular, he examines the migration of talent from journalism to the PR industry, the collapse of mainstream journalism and the role of an emergent alternative media as American journalism goes through metamorphosis from what it was to what it could become. Journalism is a social good that should equip people to understand and resist spin. Niman argues that mainstream American journalism, rather than rising to this challenge, has transparently succumbed to serving as an arm of the corporate PR industry, thus laying the groundwork for its own …

The following proposal seeks to change hiring, promoting, and firing practices among global and trans-national companies. The changes are intended to fortify the organization through better management, a better employee contract, and by moving closer to a learning organization.
At the heart of the proposal is the desire to move hiring, promoting, and firing practices to an external or internal third party, as means of creating a global culture that consistently applies the values of supra system’s organization.

Stew Of Discontent:“Middle Class” Americans' Economic Populism In The 1990s And Beyond, Jonathan Martin
Stew Of Discontent:“Middle Class” Americans' Economic Populism In The 1990s And Beyond, Jonathan Martin
Jonathan Martin
This article highlights the hidden subtlety of ordinary Americans' economic populist sentiment, a longstanding and politically pivotal form of popular resentment concerning class inequalities. Based on my research in the late 1990s, I describe how economic populist attitudes in the United States can be much more complex than suggested in the relevant literature. I use data from interviews with a small number of “ordinary middle class” Americans to illustrate little known nuances in these attitudes and to highlight how such subtleties are overlooked in prevailing characterizations of public opinion. I suggest that the oversight is the result of the fragmentary …

Freire Vs. Marx: The Tension Between Liberating Education And Student Alienation, Jonathan Martin
Jonathan Martin
The article cites a paper that compares Paulo Freire's concept of pedagogy and Karl Marx's concept of alienation in the U.S. educational context. Freire is well-known for having developed a student-centered teaching approach that assists learners in developing the awareness of their oppression. It mentioned that Marx would argue that the existing educational system naturally produces the forms of alienation and revolution can abolish the inequalities within schools.

Pedagogy Of The Alienated: Can Freirian Teaching Reach Working-Class Students?, Jonathan Martin
Pedagogy Of The Alienated: Can Freirian Teaching Reach Working-Class Students?, Jonathan Martin
Jonathan Martin
This article considers the possibilities for fostering critical consciousness (awareness and understanding of oppression) among American working-class students in the face of their often severe educational alienation. After noting the failure of existing critical pedagogical literature to address this problem adequately, it establishes the seriousness of the challenge in three ways. First, it describes how the most famous critical pedagogue, the late Paulo Freire, and one of his most eminent American followers, Ira Shor, recognized the special difficulty of working with highly alienated American students. Second, it documents the extensiveness and severity of educational alienation in the United States, especially …
