Leadership In Higher Education: A Changing Paradigm, Allen L. Sessoms Sep 1994

Leadership In Higher Education: A Changing Paradigm, Allen L. Sessoms

Trotter Review

Senior administrators at public colleges and universities have previously been in the enviable position of managing reasonably stable institutions that have enjoyed an essential place in society. These institutions were born of society's desire to ensure access to the fruits of learning by a broad spectrum of citizens and to ensure that the knowledge developed was put at the service of industry and of the nation. In the past, and particularly after World War II, public institutions of higher education enjoyed explosive growth in both the numbers of students and in terms of public support. In addition, after the launch …

Botha, F.W. de Klerk, and Nelson Mandela. Following a brief overview of situational variables, the paper describes the political personalities of Mandela and De Klerk as assessed by the Millon-Type Political Personality Checklist (MPPC). The study shows that one cannot fully account for political developments in South Africa’s transition without considering (a) the interaction between situational variables and the political personalities of Nelson Mandela and F.W. de …

Leadership : Can It Be Taught?, Edward R. Schreiber Iii Apr 1994

Leadership : Can It Be Taught?, Edward R. Schreiber Iii

Honors Theses

This paper attempts to support the assertion that leadership can be taught. To accomplish this task I must first determine what leadership is. To assert that something can be taught I must first ascertain what the subject is. This is an issue of particular sensitivity and complexity, and will be discussed in length in this paper. From there I will attack the question of whether this thing called leadership can be taught. How can an educational curriculum actually teach people leadership? This question is actually the culmination of a number of underlying issues which must first be confronted.

Providing Quality Leadership In Roxbury: A Profile Of Leon T. Nelson, Harold Horton Mar 1994

Providing Quality Leadership In Roxbury: A Profile Of Leon T. Nelson, Harold Horton

Trotter Review

Poor leadership is often the cause for the inept functioning and eventual collapse of an organization or agency. This is because the leader sets the tone and to a great extent determines whether or not an organization will be viable. Leon T. Nelson, president of the Greater Roxbury Chamber of Commerce, has done his utmost to live up to the organization's motto, "Quod facis bene fac," which means doing whatever you do as well as you possibly can.

In a community that underwent drastic demographic changes during the 1970s and 1980s, when numerous businesses led the "white flight" to suburbia, …

Leadership In Literature, Linda M. Ghers Jan 1994

Leadership In Literature, Linda M. Ghers

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to explore a controversial topic -- the utility of the arts and the function of aesthetics in society. Because the very nature of art is essentially an abstract representation of reality, to explore its function seems to be outside the realm of possibility. Yet many still consider art to have a didactic function, and the study of any of the arts is based on the premise that the appreciation and creation of art can be useful for instructing humanity about the world beyond the artwork itself. How and what art actually teaches are questions …

Teaching Leadership For A Diverse Society, Brooke Douglas Taylor Jan 1994

Teaching Leadership For A Diverse Society, Brooke Douglas Taylor

Honors Theses

According to Workforce 2000, a survey report on corporate responses to demographic and labor force trends, traditional minorities (defined as people of color, immigrants, and women) will compose up to 80 percent of the United States corporate workforce by the year 2000. This displays a significant change from earlier years, where the workforce was dominated by white American males. Because of this changing ethnic and racial mix of employees, companies are becoming more concerned with ethnic diversity and the changing needs of both individuals and companies. Though these companies are concerned, not much has been done to address the growing …

Public Policy Issues, Aaron J. Heffron

Honors Theses

The following pages are a collection of three case studies assembled with the intent to facilitate discussion about key leadership issues related to the public policy realm. Critics of leadership studies have often posted to the theoretical nature o the discipline to criticize the worth. One method to teach leadership is the utilization of case studies, or "real world" examples. If your position is that leadership can only be taught through practical experience, these case studies should present an interesting exercise. They seek to inculcate the idealistic world of theoretical studies with doses of realistic situations.

For these case studies …

How Graduate Schools Percieve A Leadership Major, Rachael Enoch

Honors Theses

We wanted our project to make a difference in two areas. We wanted to help answer the question that everyone wants to know: What a Bachelor of Arts in Leadership Studies means to graduate schools and employers? Second, we wanted our project to advance the field of leadership education and leadership studies. We thought that the data we collected …
