Cognitive Impairment And Hearing Loss In The Rio Grande Valley: A Retrospective Study Of Alzheimer's, Dementia, And Mild Cognitive Impairment, Victoria Elizondo, Antoinette Burrell, Chantal Uzoma, Desiree Brewer, Naya Williams, Erica Burrell-Walker, Kelsey Baker Sep 2024

Cognitive Impairment And Hearing Loss In The Rio Grande Valley: A Retrospective Study Of Alzheimer's, Dementia, And Mild Cognitive Impairment, Victoria Elizondo, Antoinette Burrell, Chantal Uzoma, Desiree Brewer, Naya Williams, Erica Burrell-Walker, Kelsey Baker

Research Colloquium

Background: Millions of US adults experience underrecognized hearing loss, despite effective treatments. Interestingly, hearing loss has been suggested to be further exacerbated in populations of Alzheimer’s Disease. It is hypothesized that structural and functional features of auditory brain organization, which make it vulnerable to neurodegeneration, may heighten susceptibility to hearing loss, although it is unclear how ethnicity impacts its epidemiology. Here, we sought to address this gap by exploring the association between self-reported hearing loss and cognitive decline in Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients across the Rio Grande Valley (RGV).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of the UTHealth RGV electronic …

Acculturation Stress And The Rise In Alcohol Use Among Latina Women In The U.S., Carolina M. Vela, Noe Garza, Ihsan Salloum

Research Colloquium

Background: Epidemiological surveys and world status reports consistently indicate the gap between alcohol consumption in men and women in the United States has been closing steadily over the past 25 years. Particularly, more women now than ever are engaging in alcohol-related risk behavior such as binge drinking, catching up to those of their male counterparts. Data from national surveys conducted between 2000 and 2016 suggests that the number of people above 18 who drink each year increased for women but decreased for men. This trend is consistent amongst Latina women. College-aged, American Latinas in are drinking more frequently and more …

The Impact Of Ai On Research Overproduction: Evidence In Search Results, Michael Deike

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

The release of generative AI products has raised numerous questions in the library information environment. One area which raises many concerns surrounding the use of AI is scholarly publication. The presence of AI raises numerous questions in relation to ethics of applying it in the production of academic research, and many academic publishers have not yet implemented standards for the use of AI regarding use, attribution, transparency, or disclosure. While difficult to prove with certainty in most cases, there is evidence via search results in popular databases to suggest the use of AI is having a noticeable impact on the …

Alcohol And The Resulting Consequences Of Delirium Tremens, Nicasio L. Santos Jul 2024

Alcohol And The Resulting Consequences Of Delirium Tremens, Nicasio L. Santos

2024 Symposium

Alcohol is a depressant drug, inhibiting the function of the central nervous system (CNS) and neurons in the mind (Greenberg, 1953). This results in physiological effects that are typical of an inhibited CNS; slowing of the heartbeat and breathing, and decreasing blood pressure (Scorzelli & Chaudhry, 2009). However, this inhibition of both the CNS and the neural chemistry develops a tolerance, and in turn withdrawal symptoms (Polli et al., 2023). These withdrawal symptoms are the inverse of the inhibition caused by the depressant effects of alcohol (i.e., an overactive CNS, increased activity of neurons; Smith-Alnimer & Watford, 2004). In extreme …

Come On Down! Using The Mentimeter Quiz Function For Instruction, Jennifer Horne Jul 2024

Come On Down! Using The Mentimeter Quiz Function For Instruction, Jennifer Horne

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

One unavoidable element of instruction for business librarians is what I call the “database show and tell” – when an instructor wants you to demonstrate resources that help students complete an assignment. Too often it ends up being “here’s Database X and this is what you should use it for. Here’s Database Y and it’s best for this purpose.” To make this instruction more interesting for students (and for me!), I started using the Mentimeter quiz competition function in large marketing capstone classes where I typically introduce three databases. In addition to being interactive, it includes gaming elements such as …

The Asynchronous Business Case: Student Response To An Online Case Study Model For Information Literacy, Lumarie Guth Jul 2024

The Asynchronous Business Case: Student Response To An Online Case Study Model For Information Literacy, Lumarie Guth

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

In business schools, the case study is a commonly used instructional tool. It give students the opportunity to employ critical thinking and problem-solving skills within a safe, realistic scenario and can be considered experiential learning. A librarian at a mid-sized R2 public institution transitioned the case study model from synchronous instruction into two asynchronous online tutorials. The case studies have evolved over the years to: incorporate online instructional best practices, increase engagement, focus on sustainability topics, and follow a common industry theme. Qualitative feedback from respondents was positive and provided insights on how to build an effective and relatable scenario.

Atmospheres Of Ableism: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Everyday Encounters, Kelly Parke Jul 2024

Atmospheres Of Ableism: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Everyday Encounters, Kelly Parke

2024 Symposium

Campbell and Nario-Redmond explain that ableism entails explicit and implicit biases that manifest at every level of social life. At the same time, Taussig describes ableism as "the atmosphere we breathe." Disability Studies scholarship has done much to identify how ableism operates in the everyday lives of disabled and non-disabled people alike; however, little work has been done to articulate it in terms of the atmospheric quality that Taussig discusses.

Building on Taussig's assessment of ableism in conjunction with Casey's similar articulation of the atmosphere of emotion, this paper addresses the findings of an online qualitative survey distributed to adults …

Knock And The Door Shall Be Opened Unto You, Using Strength And Conditioning As A Tool To Open Doors For Ministry, Tim Dornemann

CSKLS Annual Conference

This professional presentation will discuss how the power of meeting a need can open doors for ministry. Christian Sports Performance Ministry utilizes strength and conditioning to encourage, equip, and enable athletes, coaches, and educators to create relationships through which the Gospel can be shared. In areas of the world where current conditioning methods are not commonplace, education on how to enhance physical performance can be very attractive.

In conjunction with Athletes in Action Philippines, Christian Sports Performance has successfully been using strength and conditioning to open doors for ministry since 2011. Initially, a skill-based training system was developed and used …

Ncaa Division Iii Student-Athletes’ Perceptions Of Faith Informed Coaching, Sean M. Strehlow, Nadia Huggard, Ethan Kiggins, Caleb Narber Jun 2024

Ncaa Division Iii Student-Athletes’ Perceptions Of Faith Informed Coaching, Sean M. Strehlow, Nadia Huggard, Ethan Kiggins, Caleb Narber

CSKLS Annual Conference

Over the past several decades, increased scholarly attention has been placed on the role of faith in coaching pedagogy within Christian contexts. However, research on faith and coaching has yet to include student-athletes’ perceptions of their own coach’s ability to integrate their faith. Without the student-athlete perspective on faith and coaching, questions remain about the efficacy of faith informed coaching practices and whether those practices are experienced as intended by athletes. This presentation offers some preliminary findings from a case study conducted on one athletic program at a small, Christian liberal arts institution. These findings include qualitative data from coaches …

Mukha Bhastrika On Reaction Time In Male High School Athletes: A Pilot Study, Malachi D. Ruiz, Matthew D. Ruiz

CSKLS Annual Conference

This pilot study investigates the potential impact of yoga (Mukha Bhastrika) practice on reaction time in male high school athletes. While existing literature emphasizes the importance of reaction time in contact sports and the potential of calming exercises like yoga to reduce it, there remains a gap in the literature focusing on male high school athletes in contact sports. This pilot study utilized a randomized controlled trial with ten male high school athletes. The participants were divided into two groups: one practicing Mukha Bhastrika and the other serving as a control group which simply rested between reaction time tests. Reaction …
