The 30th anniversary of WorldCat was celebrated in 2001. At that time, there were 45 million records with over 750 million location listings, spanning over 4,000 years of recorded knowledge in 377 languages. In the anniversary year, a bibliometric study was begun under the auspices of an OCLC/ALISE research grant. A 10% systematic random sample of the database was analyzed utilizing the OCLC iCAs software to profile the monographic contents of WorldCat by type of library, subject and language parameters. The profile reveals the extent of global publications made accessible through the OCLC international network. Several findings of the study …

Donald J. Ivey donated research files he compiled and chronological biographies he created during his tenure as curator of collections at Heritage Village in Largo. These materials reflect his interest in Florida’s political history and include chronological biographies, clippings, photographs, and other research materials on notable Florida political leaders. Items fall within three distinct series: Chronological Biographies, Biographical Research Files on Individuals, and a Prosopographical File on the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. Most of the research and photocopies date from the mid-1980s through the late 1990s, though the collection does include a substantial number of microfilm copies of newspaper …

In these affairs, no gun is needed. The victims do it all themselves. And the bullets never miss.--Bruce Jackson, CounterPunch , May 2003 Libraries play an important role in community building by supporting the public sphere to provide a commons environment that addresses the need for people to meet and interact with others. (1) Additionally, the library preserves historical and cultural memory and maintains resources for discourse and decision-making. However, since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the passage of the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act, …

Jan Reiner, an architect and longtime resident of St. Petersburg, emphasized the transformation of the urban landscape in his works. According to Reiner, the urbanist “creates an environment which serves public needs and is in harmony with nature.” A 1932 graduate of Prague University in his native Czechoslovakia, Reiner later earned a masters degree in architecture at Harvard. His extensive record of teaching, consulting, and design work brought him acclaim as an architect that emphasized creative solutions to urban settlements. The purpose of this research was to explore the changes in children's bicycle helmet use and motor vehicle bicycle related injuries in Hillsborough County, Florida before and after passage of the Florida's bicycle helmet law for children under the age of 16. The results show a significant increase in bicycle helmet use among children, ages 5–13, in the post-law years compared with the pre-law years. Also, there has been a significant decline in the rates of bicycle related motor vehicle injuries among children in the post-law years compared with the pre-law years. Impact Of Globalisation On Information Seeking: The Role Of Cultural Lenses And Indigenous Knowledge, Ardis Hanson
Impact Of Globalisation On Information Seeking: The Role Of Cultural Lenses And Indigenous Knowledge, Ardis Hanson
Dean's Office Publications
How can understanding cultural lenses help us rethink constructs that have been taken for granted and assist in identifying new problems of significance in the delivery of information and the establishment of discrete, culturally based cyber-communities? With the increased access of global information, a critical question is how does an individual (or political entity) acquire information that is bias-free as possible that can be reviewed and interpreted in the appropriate context (indigenous knowledge). This paper attempts to provide a discussion of cultural lenses and indigenous knowledge in the development of information seeking behaviours and the design of information systems.

An Author Co-Citation Analysis Of Medical Informatics, James E. Andrews
An Author Co-Citation Analysis Of Medical Informatics, James E. Andrews
School of Information Faculty Publications
Objective: This study presents the results of an author co-citation analysis of the interdisciplinary field of medical informatics.
Methods: An author co-citation analysis was conducted for the years 1994 to 1998, using the fifty most-cited American College of Medical Informatics fellows as an author population. Co-citation data were calculated for every author pair, and multivariate analyses were performed to ultimately show the relationships among all authors. A multidimensional map was created, wherein each author is represented as a point, and the proximity of these points reflects the relationships of authors as perceived by multiple citers.
Results and Conclusion: The results …

Truth And ‘Truth’: The Social Construction Of Truth And Memory In International Human Rights, Rachel A. May
Latin America and the Caribbean Studies Faculty Publications
Transitional justice is a rich area of inquiry. The literature and the academic discourse surrounding the phenomenon of transitional justice are at the forefront of human rights scholarship. Much of this discourse focuses on questions of the functional choices: restorative or retributive justice. A “restorative” approach to justice focuses on the idea of reconciliation while the “retributive” approach focuses on the punishment of perpetrators. The idea of truth telling, which encompasses truth commissions and historical memory, is most closely connected to a restorative approach to justice, although seeking the truth is also an implicit and explicit goal of criminal courts …

From Subject Gateways To Portals: The Role Of Metadata In Accessing International Research, Susan J. Heron, Ardis Hanson
Dean's Office Publications
Traditionally, academicians and researchers have turned to librarians to assist in the organisation and, ultimately, the retrieval of information. Since the beginning of scholarly activity libraries have organized information based upon the scholar’s area of study. Subject collections comprised of materials in various formats have drawn scholars to the library. Today libraries organize myriad online resources to assist selected user communities, again based upon areas of study through the development of subject gateways or portals. However, a critical issue remains how best to broker access to heterogeneous information and learning resources.
