Cultivating Gratitude In Christian Sport Professionals, Julie Powell
Cultivating Gratitude In Christian Sport Professionals, Julie Powell
CSKLS Annual Conference
Using the framework of the eight dimensions of wellness and the five habits of a flourishing life, this presentation will focus on how to cultivate the virtue of gratitude and thanksgiving in order to combat the undesirable vice of entitlement. This presentation will outline what gratitude is, how we express it, and how to embody it as a part of our character. Cultivating a grateful disposition can be the result of practicing spiritual disciplines and the session will brainstorm ideas of how this might look in our current profession and in our personal lives.
Implications Of Borderline Personality Disorder Cluster Symptoms For Suicide Risk, Eve Sudberry, Erin Mcmeekin, Keyne Law
Implications Of Borderline Personality Disorder Cluster Symptoms For Suicide Risk, Eve Sudberry, Erin Mcmeekin, Keyne Law
School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference
We explored the relationship between borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptom clusters and the likelihood of a history of suicidal ideation (SI). Those with BPD are at a significantly higher risk for suicide. Many symptom clusters such as negative relationships and affective instability have been implicated in suicide risk. Undergraduates (n=126; Mage=20.85, SD=5.29) completed self-report measures assessing BPD symptoms and suicide history. We plan to run a logistic regression to accomplish our aim of uncovering the risk for SI associated with different BPD symptom clusters. We hope our findings will provide clarity on the mechanisms behind SI in those with BPD.
Exploring The Research On The Transformative Power Of Narrative Therapy, Hajar Ouakrim, Craft Baine
Exploring The Research On The Transformative Power Of Narrative Therapy, Hajar Ouakrim, Craft Baine
School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference
Narrative therapy is a dynamic method that highlights the importance of individual narratives in forming personalities and perspectives. When going through the process of communicating your struggles and removing existing dominant narratives, narrative therapy allows individuals to cultivate preferred narrative including their identities, connections, and emotions. Although there have been numerous studies of narrative therapy in various contexts, to date, no study has attempted to summarize these findings. Therefore, we are conducting a meta-analysis to identify trends in the effectiveness of narrative therapy. Our analysis includes 87 empirical studies of narrative therapy.
Servant Leadership In The Periodical Literature Of Librarianship, Simone Clunie, Darlene Parrish
Servant Leadership In The Periodical Literature Of Librarianship, Simone Clunie, Darlene Parrish
Library Scholarship
Leadership is one of the most critical factors in the success or failure of an organization and can greatly impact the health and well-being of all participants, especially lower participants. (Kendrick, Kaetrena Davis, 2020). In Robert Greenleaf’s 1970 book, The Servant as Leader, he posits that a leader should be a servant first, seeking the health and development of all participants in an organization. This research project investigates the number of articles published in the periodical literature of librarianship about servant leadership, the nature of the coverage, and if servant leadership is being implemented in libraries as it was …
The Role Of Sense Of Purpose In Health Navigation Among Marginalized Older Adults, Ameesha Narine
The Role Of Sense Of Purpose In Health Navigation Among Marginalized Older Adults, Ameesha Narine
Symposium of Student Scholars
A sense of purpose is a central, self-organizing life aim that guides choices and behaviors (Lewis, 2020; Mcknight & Kashdan 2009). In older adulthood, having a sense of purpose is linked with positive health (Musich et al., 2018; Lewis & Hill, 2021). Understanding how older adults who identify as socially marginalized (e.g., racially/ ethnically diverse, LGBTQ+) leverage purpose to navigate their health, for example, when setting health values, making health decisions, or adapting to health challenges may support the development of tailored resources to combat social disparities embedded in healthcare systems. This study used qualitative thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, …
Generating Channel Morphology Data Through Arcgis Pro, Ethan Manigbas
Generating Channel Morphology Data Through Arcgis Pro, Ethan Manigbas
Symposium of Student Scholars
River cross-sections are often extracted using field surveys at measured intervals. This field-oriented approach allows for a tangible relationship between the data and its collector but at the expense of finance, time, labor, and potentially the environment. With the advancement of geospatial tools, such data can be found online, extracted, and even analyzed with contemporary Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a completely virtual setting, transcending the need for fieldwork in select project topics. We tested this approach with the help of ArcGIS Pro software on the Vishnu Springs headwater stream located in the Western Illinois region of the Upper Mississippi …
Understanding The Importance Of Social Emotional Learning In Children And The Link Between Mental Health, Lynette Marie Lubiak
Understanding The Importance Of Social Emotional Learning In Children And The Link Between Mental Health, Lynette Marie Lubiak
Student Research Symposium
I will examine how very important it is to society to teach structured Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs to children in school. It can bring mental wellbeing and the ability to have healthy relationships, non addictive behaviors and being able to emotionally regulate themselves. Since we have pushed on only academia and not SEL for our children, mental illness has skyrocketed. This problem started after the SEL part of school was taken out of schools and then the division between rich and poor became wider and wider as time went on. If we were to bring back SEL into school, …
Using Advocacy Exercises To Promote Academic Identity And Ownership, Timothy Schoenfeld
Using Advocacy Exercises To Promote Academic Identity And Ownership, Timothy Schoenfeld
Faculty Scholarship Symposium
In the sciences and mathematics, having a strong STEM-related skillset and personal STEM identity are both important for fostering long-term persistence in STEM-related vocational fields. Science and math courses are routinely designed to build the skillset of students but creating a positive STEM identity is more difficult, particularly for underrepresented groups. Across the semester of a pilot neuroscience course, students engaged in daily and semester-long exercises in learning about and practicing advocacy as a way to build positive identities in science. At the beginning and end of the semester, students took the Persistence in the Sciences (PITS) survey, measuring student …

Constructing Community: How Shared Historic Preservation Interests Build Better Places And Spaces, Sara Decaro
Faculty Submissions
Generating interest in local history and historic buildings can be a challenge at times for archivists and historic preservationists. When the two groups collaborate, however, it can lead to greater interest and investment in preservation across the board. This session will explore how partnerships between historic preservationists and archivists can increase community relationships, foster greater interest in local histories, and further work to preserve a community’s documentary and architectural heritage. Tricia Gilson will discuss a multi-partner effort to document a nineteenth-century historic downtown and some of the women-owned and Jewish-owned businesses once found there. Sara DeCaro will describe her experience …

The Impact Of Childhood Trauma On Adult Attachment Style, Luella Rubin-Wylie, Desiree Crevecoeur-Macphail
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Repeated and complex childhood trauma can have devastating effects on individuals and their future relationships. Attachment styles are developed in the early years of an individual's life, and adverse experiences during these early years can negatively affect the attachment style that an individual develops. Various traumatic experiences during childhood, such as abuse/neglect, death/separation of parent, or witnessing domestic violence, may lead individuals to develop insecure attachment styles in their future romantic relationships. In many instances, experiencing childhood trauma can result in the development of aninsecure attachment style of anxious, avoidant, or disorganized. This study aimed to examine the impact of …

Thomas C. Hunt Building a Research Community Day
Individuals seeking certification as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®™) by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB®™) must meet certain eligibility requirements. In addition to passing the BCBA examination, students are required to complete supervised practical fieldwork. In accruing fieldwork hours, trainees must be provided with the opportunity to complete unrestricted activities. The BACB defines unrestricted activities as “…those that are most likely to be performed by a BCBA,” and requires that 60% of fieldwork hours are comprised of these activities (BACB, 2022a). Fieldwork hours may be accrued across a number of different host sites (e.g., hospital units, schools, community locations, …

Scholar Week 2016 - present
Police K-9s play a multifaceted role in policing including crime control and public relations. The advent of these police specialty units coincided with the movement to professionalize policing and have been used to aid law enforcement since the start of the 20th century.
We will demonstrate the role of a working K-9 and the many different areas that are covered in law enforcement such as: bite, detection, narcotics, firearms, explosives, and technology. We will examine the role of the K-9 handler and the impact of their relationship with their k-9 and how this bond influences the effectiveness of law enforcement tasks.
Therapeutic Use Of Music For Geriatric Dementia Patients, Katelynn Roscioli
Therapeutic Use Of Music For Geriatric Dementia Patients, Katelynn Roscioli
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Dementia impacts millions of individuals and their families worldwide, yet many caregivers remain untrained, unpaid, and unable to maintain their own health while caring for their patients. Despite the need for support, limited resources exist to aid these caregivers in combatting this progressive, debilitating disease. One possibility lies in practices rooted in music therapy, which have been shown to restore memory retention, personhood, and quality of life in dementia patients. However, individuals outside of music therapists, especially those with limited musical backgrounds, may not consider implementing music therapy within their care plan. To make this approach more accessible, a website …

Praise In The Collegiate Classroom: How Narcissism, Entitlement, Empathy, And A Desire For Fame Impact Student’S Preferences For Praise, Alexandra Crissman
Student Scholar Showcase
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personality traits, namely narcissism, entitlement, empathy, and a desire for fame, and a preference for public praise in a student population. Past research has shown that those who are higher in narcissism are also higher in entitlement and that these rates have been rising with future generations. Past research has also indicated a negative relationship between narcissistic tendencies and empathy, inferring that those higher in narcissism tend to score lower on empathy measures. In this study, undergraduate students were surveyed online to determine scores on four measures of traits …

Previous research has been conducted on how various crimes involving interpersonal violence can occur. The current study looks to expand on this previous research by assessing how interpersonal violence can occur. The study examines Eastern and Western cultures and how they can impact interpersonal violence. Previous research has shown that people born in eastern countries such as Asia have more of an acceptance of dating violence and rape. One hundred and thirty-six participants participated in the …
The Fight For Fluoridation In Stl, Noor Yousaf
The Fight For Fluoridation In Stl, Noor Yousaf
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Fluoridation is the addition of fluoride to a source of drinking water. In St. Louis’s public water supply, the amount of fluoride remains the same since 1953 at 5ppm. Dr. Ralph Rosen and his team of dentists and researchers advocated for the fluoridation of the water because it reduced the frequency of dental caries occurring in children and adults alike, but the public had opinions on the sudden addition of chemicals to their water. This includes how the public’s health will be affected, how consumer products would change, and also how effective this addition of fluoride would be. This debate …
Uncharted Territory: Researching The Effect Of Implicit Bias On The Political Attitudes Of Black Participants, Briona Young
Uncharted Territory: Researching The Effect Of Implicit Bias On The Political Attitudes Of Black Participants, Briona Young
Scholars Week
Extant research suggests that implicit bias can predict behavior such as voting, policy preferences, and assessment of government performance (Pérez 2010). Yet, research on implicit bias has largely excluded people of color, leaving a wide gap in our understanding of implicit bias and its effects on society (Orey, 2013). In this study, we research implicit bias within the black community and test its effects on political attitudes. We administer Harvard’s Implicit Association Test (IAT) and a survey to measure levels of implicit bias and subsequently policy preferences and trust in government. We expect to find that the black participants with …
Trauma-Informed Practices In Education, Ashley Winfield
Trauma-Informed Practices In Education, Ashley Winfield
Honors Projects and Presentations: Undergraduate
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a set of guidelines regarding trauma-informed practices in the medical field. When working with individuals who have experienced trauma, the way in which we interact with them matters. What is less standard than these CDC guidelines, though, is how to best support students who have experienced some level of trauma or adverse childhood experiences (ACES) in the classroom. How can we equip educators with the tools needed to support students in their classrooms who have experienced trauma? Transforming Education created a list of five key trauma-informed social-emotional learning principles to guide teachers …

Bringing Open Science Training Back To Basics: The Foundations In Open Science Oer, Sinéad Hanrahan
Bringing Open Science Training Back To Basics: The Foundations In Open Science Oer, Sinéad Hanrahan
Publications
Open Science (OS) seeks to apply the concept of openness across all stages of research practice. It aims to facilitate the dissemination of research at speed and to foster collaboration between researchers (Foster Open Science, 2023). OS is an essential aspect of Responsible Research Practice (ALLEA, 2017) and integral to addressing the complex problems facing the world (UNESCO, 2021). It is thus imperative that research performing organisations provide effective OS training. Anecdotal evidence gleaned over five years of OS Training provision suggests that researchers have less understanding of foundational research practices than library OS instructors anticipate. This further suggests that …

Research data services (RDS) are growing rapidly in libraries. To better understand the current state of RDS across R1 and R2 institutions, how they've evolved since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and who is providing these services, this research project built an interoperable Library Data Services (LIDS) dataset to inform RDS development and assessment. The dataset records data service area(s) (e.g., Research Data Management), fifteen data service types (e.g., data management/data curation), and personnel and unit information gathered through website content analyses, alongside Carnegie Classification data. Unlike similar studies (Radecki and Springer, 2020; Yu, 2017; Yoon & Schultz, 2017; …
