A Model Of The Impact Of Reimbursement Schemes On Health Plan Choice, Emmett Keeler, Grace Carter, Joseph Newhouse May 1998

A Model Of The Impact Of Reimbursement Schemes On Health Plan Choice, Emmett Keeler, Grace Carter, Joseph Newhouse

Emmett Keeler

Flat capitation (uniform prospective payments) makes enrolling healthy enrollees profitable to health plans. Plans with relatively generous benefits may attract the sick and fail through a premium spiral. We simulate a model of idealized managed competition to explore the effect on market performance of alternatives to flat capitation such as severity-adjusted capitation and reduced supply-side cost-sharing. In our model flat capitation causes severe market problems. Severity adjustment and to a lesser extent reduced supply-side cost-sharing improve market performance, but outcomes are efficient only in cases in which people bear the marginal costs of their choices.

Little did Hawkins know he'd end up at the New York women's fall collections, doing hair backstage for two hot fashion shows: languid up- do's at Marc Jacobs and braids at Anna Sui - and with a listing by name under "Special Thanks" in Sui's program.

We'd surreptitiously sneak through Mother's bureau drawers for silk hose and white kidskin gloves and sparkling costume jewelry or through Daddy's dresser for crisply ironed white handkerchiefs and shiny cufflinks and a Twist-O-Flex metal-band watch. Fur trim Another trend from days gone by, fur trim on collars and cuffs of coats and on jackets, on hems of dresses and skirts, and very chic trimming cashmere sweater sets.

[...] did those at the Damien Center, where Don originally went to get solace and ended up giving it himself to others in need. [...] there was his family of seamstresses, who started with him when he returned home in 1983 to ply the fashion trade from the Circle City after success and frustration designing in the Big Apple. The ground-floor, one-room space almost looked like something out of New York - draped fabrics to cover the huge floor-to-ceiling windows; draped fabrics over foam-filled couch cushions; fashion magazines on glass-topped coffee tables, and a loft for the workroom, so his …

Lots of roomy relaxed sweaters, coats and jackets played with narrow skirts and lean trousers, the body-conscious knitwear paired with more generous tubular pants and the new flared skirt. [...] with Kors, you can't have too much cashmere - whether double-face, felt or big knit ribs. Who else would embrace such a mix of rich colors and bold patterns and make it all work? A lot to chew on from Norma Kamali: A healthy mix of crunchy carrots, celery, broccoli and cauliflower keeps one in shape, just like Kamali at age 50.

State Corporate Taxation And Business Power: A Pooled Analysis, Andrew Ewoh, Euel Elliott Feb 1998

State Corporate Taxation And Business Power: A Pooled Analysis, Andrew Ewoh, Euel Elliott

Andrew I.E. Ewoh

This article investigates whether businesses in concentrated or regulated industries are more likely to exert influence in the area of tax policy. Simultaneous equation models are developed that describe the behavior of firms in their effort to achieve policy outcomes beneficial to their common interests. These models are estimated using pooled time series cross-sectional data. The results show that firms in concentrated industries are likely to seek political influence if they are affected by direct or exclusive government regulation. The study also reveals that industrial concentration leads to greater corporate income. Examination of the political partisanship thesis provides support for …

"Humans And Animals"? On Saying What We Mean, Clinton Chapman, Nancy Dess Feb 1998

"Humans And Animals"? On Saying What We Mean, Clinton Chapman, Nancy Dess

Clinton D Chapman

Discusses the linguistic phrase of "humans and animals" to distinguish humans categorically from all other animal species, and its application to psychology. It is suggested that the habit of using the human–animal convention persists because the human–animal dichotomy is institutionalized in psychology. Psychologists who study humans and those how study nonhumans tend to use different methodologies to train graduate students accordingly. They often use different publication venues and occupy different spaces. Separate ethics and funding boards review their research protocols. The nature of nonhuman animal minds and evolution is discussed. It is proposed that unexamined use of human–animal language should …

Relationship Of Family Structure To Adolescent Drug Use, Peer Affiliation, And Perception Of Peer Acceptance Of Drug Use, Jeanne Jenkins, Sabina Zunguze

Jeanne E. Jenkins

The sample consisted of 2,229 high school students who were administered a self-report instrument containing items measuring drug use and psychosocial variables. Dependent variables included frequency of use of five gateway drugs [cigarettes, marijuana, beer, wine coolers, and liquor], degree of affiliation with drug- using peers, and perceptions of peer acceptance of drugs. Comparison groups included single-parent [both mother- and father-headed], step-parent, and intact families. Analysis conducted separately by grade level revealed significant differences between groups on drug use variables in grades 8 and 10, with adolescents from intact families reporting less frequent drug use, fewer drug-using friends, and perceptions …

Torture And Eucharist: Theology, Politics, And The Body Of Christ, William Cavanaugh Dec 1997

Torture And Eucharist: Theology, Politics, And The Body Of Christ, William Cavanaugh

William T. Cavanaugh

"Cavanaugh begins with an engrossing analysis of the dynamics of torture and disappearance as a mode disciplining the body politic. He judiciously uses psychological and social scientific sources without letting them override the theological focus of the book. He then gives an equally engrossing account of the Church in Chile under Pinochet. His analyses both of Maritain and the 'New Christendom' ecclesiology provide as interesting critique of the failures of the Church to respond to Pinochet's repression, while his concluding chapter on eucharistic theology points towards the source of the successful responses made by the Church. Particularly useful and interesting …

Longitudinal Study Of Dental Development In Chimpanzees Of Known Chronological Age: Implications For Understanding The Age At Death Of Plio-Pleistocene Hominids, Robert Anemone, Mark Mooney Dec 1997

Longitudinal Study Of Dental Development In Chimpanzees Of Known Chronological Age: Implications For Understanding The Age At Death Of Plio-Pleistocene Hominids, Robert Anemone, Mark Mooney

Robert L. Anemone

Reconstruction of life history variables of fossil hominids on the basis of dental development requires understanding of and comparison with the pattern and timing of dental development among both living humans and pongids. Whether dental development among living apes or humans provides a better model for comparison with that of Plio-Pleistocene hominids of the genus Australopithecus remains a contentious point. This paper presents new data on chimpanzees documenting developmental differences in the dentitions of modern humans and apes and discusses their significance in light of recent controversies over the human or pongid nature of australopithecine dental development. Longitudinal analysis of …

Realism, Institutions, And Neutrality: Constraining Conflict Through The Force Of Norms, Daniel Austin Dec 1997

Realism, Institutions, And Neutrality: Constraining Conflict Through The Force Of Norms, Daniel Austin

Daniel A. Austin

Realism posits power as the key component of international relations. In contrast, Institutionalism looks to norms and customs as the primary bases of world politics. Yet both theories frequently fall short in explaining major international events. This article considers the institution of neutrality as an example of how norms exert a stabilizing influence in international relations. On the other hand, the failure to observe norms often results in instability, and in extreme cases, can lead to war. When this point is reached, the use of force may be the only means to restore a stable balance of power. By drawing …
