Assessing Receptivity To Empirically Supported Treatments In Rape Crisis Centers, Tonya Edmond, Rachel Voth Schrag

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations

Survivors of sexual violence are at risk for PTSD, depression, and anxiety. There are several empirically supported treatments (EST) that are effective for addressing these trauma symptoms; however, uptake of these ESTs among Rape Crisis Center (RCC) counselors is low. This research project sought to determine counselors’ attitudes toward evidence-based practices (EBPs); their perceptions of the intervention characteristics of three specific ESTs: Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy; and differences in attitudes and perceptions based on agency setting (urban/rural) and counselor education. Interviews And Conversations About Leaving Services (Icals): A Review Of Resources After Tanf, Maria C. Cole

Social Work Theses

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) policy is designed to protect the nation’s most vulnerable families from severe hardship. The policy encourages moving people from “welfare to work” and improving child welfare. TANF, though, has remained largely unchanged since its adoption in 1996 despite persistent poverty nationwide and worsening poverty in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Consequently, TANF has not effectively responded to poverty nor has it improved child welfare. The researcher conducted a comprehensive literature review which identified employment barriers found to affect families leaving TANF services. Several studies illuminated that mental or behavioral health, substance abuse, race …

Measurement, Education And Tracking In Integrated Care (Metric): Use Of A Culturally Adapted Education Tool Versus Standard Education To Increase Engagement In Depression Treatment Among Hispanic Patients: Study Protocol For A Randomized Control Trial, Katherine Sanchez, Brittany H. Eghaneyan, Michael O. Killian, Leopoldo Cabassa, Madhukar Trivedi

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations

Significant mental health disparities exist for Hispanic populations, especially with regard to depression treatment. Stigma and poor communication between patients and their providers result in low use of antidepressant medications and early treatment withdrawal. Cultural factors which influence treatment decisions among Hispanics include fears about the addictive and harmful properties of antidepressants, worries about taking too many pills, and the stigma attached to taking medications. Primary care settings often are the gateway to identifying undiagnosed or untreated mental health disorders, particularly for people with co-morbid physical health conditions. Hispanics, in particular, are more likely to receive mental healthcare in primary …

What Works For Whom? Military Sexual Trauma Vs. Campus Sexual Assault Survivors And The Effectiveness Of Therapeutic Approaches; A Systematic Review And Comparison., Daphne Jaguar Browell

Social Work Theses

There are few data comparing military sexual trauma (MST) to civilian sexual trauma; however, there is some anecdotal evidence that MST is unique and may be associated with different mental health outcomes. This may be attributed to the distinct characteristics of MST, including the environment in which the trauma takes place and traits of the perpetrator and the survivor; however, on closer inspection these characteristics are not inimitable and many parallels can be seen when compared with campus sexual assault. While there are studies on the effectiveness of specific interventions, there has not been a systematic review comparing the different …

“In A Way It’S A Violation”: Pap Smear Knowledge And Beliefs Among Underserved Women In Substance Abuse Treatment, Amberly R. Prykhodko

Social Work Theses

Due to many factors, women in substance abuse treatment are at high risk of contracting the human papillomavirus (HPV) and developing cervical cancer. Despite this, the likelihood of accessing preventative healthcare, such as a Pap exam, is low. Substance abuse treatment facilities may be suitable access points for preventative cervical cancer screening. Using secondary focus group data, this qualitative narrative analysis examines answers given by women in substance abuse treatment regarding knowledge, experiences, barriers, and facilitators to Pap exams. The purpose of this analysis was to further understand how this population views Pap smears in order to guide best practices …

Understanding Aging Well From The Perspectives Of Homebound Older Adults, Debra Lynn Rogers May 2017

Understanding Aging Well From The Perspectives Of Homebound Older Adults, Debra Lynn Rogers

Social Work Theses

With the population becoming “grayer” the United States has begun to question what it means to be aging well. Previous research has examined what it means to age well how to diminish age-related losses, although there is a lack of consensus about what this means. The older adult population is diverse regarding race, ethnicity, sex, culture, sexual orientation, and ability; thus, aging well can mean different things to different people. Due to this diversity, the subjective perspectives and experiences of older adults are important to understand the processes of aging well and expand its conceptualization to a heterogeneous population of …

Understanding Mental Health Literacy Of Hispanic Patients In Primary Care Settings: Examining The Relationship Between Depression Stigma, Depression Knowledge, And Education Level, Veronica Lopez May 2017

Understanding Mental Health Literacy Of Hispanic Patients In Primary Care Settings: Examining The Relationship Between Depression Stigma, Depression Knowledge, And Education Level, Veronica Lopez

Social Work Theses

Hispanics are less likely to access mental health care services due to stigma related to depression and lack of cultural effective education, along with other socioeconomic factors. Hispanics are more likely to access care through a primary care provider, making a primary care setting with an integrative behavioral health program an ideal place for early mental health interventions. Understanding the mental health literacy of patients in a healthcare setting may improve quality of care, that can lead to early detection of mental illness and can help engage a patient into treatment. The present study seeks to add to the research …
