Emergency Management & Homeland Security In Higher Education: The Critical Need For Standardized Curriculum, Redd R.J.G Branner
Emergency Management & Homeland Security In Higher Education: The Critical Need For Standardized Curriculum, Redd R.J.G Branner
Learning Showcase 2014
Over the past few decades, higher education has become an important factor in advancing organizations, as well as individuals advancing within their organization. There are many staple programs in higher education such as business administration, management and organizational behavior. These standardized programs have often been used by public servants to advance their careers. Public servants such as law enforcement officers and firefighters receive a more beneficial education attaining degrees designed specifically for their disciplines. Law enforcement personnel commonly use the criminal justice degree to advance their careers and Firefighters often use the Fire and Emergency Services degree to advance their …

Terrorism Abroad, Terrorism At Home: How Serious Is The U.S. Domestic Threat, Redd R.J.G Branner
Learning Showcase 2014
We often associate the events of 9/11 with terrorism in the United States. However, the U.S., in the homeland and abroad have long been the victims of domestic and international terrorism. Prior to 9/11, terrorism was not a part of our daily vocabulary or part of our daily news. Children born today will more than likely not know a life or vocabulary with social media and terrorism. Social media and terrorism? Through the use of social media terrorist groups such as ISIS have taken on a campaign of subversion to elicit interest from vulnerable populations, most commonly teenagers in a …
Professionalization Of The Fire Service: There’S More To It Than Putting The Wet Stuff On The Hot Stuff, Redd R.J.G Branner
Professionalization Of The Fire Service: There’S More To It Than Putting The Wet Stuff On The Hot Stuff, Redd R.J.G Branner
Learning Showcase 2014
Professional firefighting in the United States is often traced back to the 17th Century; most notably, the Boston fire of 1631. In the early days of firefighting, fire departments were, for lack of better words, social organizations. From the earliest firefighting operations consisting of bucket brigades, to the latest high-tech equipment designed to extinguish fires, firefighters have always been our heroes! We applaud them when they extinguish fires and save lives, we mourn them when they lose their lives. Firefighting is often thought of as putting the wet stuff on the hot stuff (water on fire); however, firefighting goes much …
Elected To Lead, Betrayed By Greed: The Hoodwinking Of Constituents, Redd R.J.G Branner
Elected To Lead, Betrayed By Greed: The Hoodwinking Of Constituents, Redd R.J.G Branner
Learning Showcase 2014
As we make our way to the polls during election season, we take several approaches: we have our mind made up on who we want to lead; we vote for the same party in all categories; or we are not sure about the candidates, but we vote safely. Our hopes are that we have collectively selected the candidate(s) that will lead us, advancing our best interests ethically. Most candidates are everyday people, cut from the same cloth as the constituents. As they campaign for our votes, there is no doubt that there goal in attaining office is to be a …

Stepping Up: Burden Sharing By Nato's Newest Members, Joel R. Hillison Dr.
Stepping Up: Burden Sharing By Nato's Newest Members, Joel R. Hillison Dr.
Monographs, Collaborative Studies, & IRPs
This book examines the burden sharing behavior of new NATO members. It makes the argument that new NATO members are burden sharing at a greater rate than older NATO members. It also suggests that NATO’s expansion did not lead to greater free-riding behavior in NATO, contrary to the predictions of the collective action literature. This analysis reveals that new NATO members have demonstrated the willingness to contribute to NATO missions, but are often constrained by their limited capabilities. This argument is supported using case studies, interviews with key NATO officials, and quantitative analysis of NATO defense expenditures and troop contributions.

Political And Socio-Economic Change: Revolutions And Their Implications For The U.S. Military, John R. Deni
Political And Socio-Economic Change: Revolutions And Their Implications For The U.S. Military, John R. Deni
Monographs, Collaborative Studies, & IRPs
Dramatic political, economic, and social changes across both the Greater Middle East and Latin America over the last several years—in some instances revolutionary, in others evolutionary—have had profound implications for global security generally and U.S. security specifically. Policymakers in Washington are hence confronted with the issue of how to respond to the various changes in these disparate regions in order to safeguard U.S. interests, promote Western values, and shape the security environment into the future. Whether and to what degree U.S. policymakers can influence the unfolding changes and shape outcomes remains to be seen. But if Washington is to achieve …

Visual Propaganda And Extremism In The Online Environment, Cori E. Dauber, Carol K. Winkler
Visual Propaganda And Extremism In The Online Environment, Cori E. Dauber, Carol K. Winkler
Monographs, Collaborative Studies, & IRPs
Visual images have been a central component of propaganda for as long as propaganda has been produced. But recent developments in communication and information technologies have given terrorist and extremist groups options and abilities they never would have been able to come close to even 5 or 10 years ago. There are terrorist groups who, with very little initial investment, are making videos that are coming so close to the quality of BBC or CNN broadcasts that the difference is meaningless, and with access to the web they have instantaneous access to a global audience. Given the broad social science …

Countering Radicalization And Recruitment To Al-Qaeda: Fighting The War Of Deeds, Paul Kamolnick
Countering Radicalization And Recruitment To Al-Qaeda: Fighting The War Of Deeds, Paul Kamolnick
ETSU Authors Bookshelf
This Letort Paper proposes that actions, policies, and deeds—those of the U.S. Government and al-Qaeda—be leveraged as a means of delegitimizing al-Qaeda terrorist propaganda. Two chief fronts—changing deeds and challenging deeds—is proposed. Changing deeds requires that the United States carefully and systematically examine its own foreign and military policies and their specific consequences for the Arab and Muslim world. Challenging deeds comprises systematically countering with evidence and fact al-Qaeda’s two greatest propagandistic fabrications: that the United States is a crusader at war with Islam, and that al-Qaeda is the vanguard defender of a besieged and oppressed Muslim Umma. Provocative at …

Failed States And Fragile Societies: A New World Disorder?, Ingo Trauschweizer, Steven M. Miner
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Since the end of the Cold War, a new dynamic has arisen within the international system, one that does not conform to established notions of the state’s monopoly on war. In this changing environment, the global community must decide how to respond to the challenges posed to the state by military threats, political and economic decline, and social fragmentation. This insightful work considers the phenomenon of state failure and asks how the international community might better detect signs of state decay at an early stage and devise legally and politically legitimate responses.
This collection of essays brings military and social …

[Introduction To] More Than Shelter: Activism And Community In San Francisco Public Housing, Amy L. Howard
[Introduction To] More Than Shelter: Activism And Community In San Francisco Public Housing, Amy L. Howard
Bookshelf
In the popular imagination, public housing tenants are considered, at best, victims of intractable poverty and, at worst, criminals. More Than Shelter makes clear that such limited perspectives do not capture the rich reality of tenants’ active engagement in shaping public housing into communities. By looking closely at three public housing projects in San Francisco, Amy L. Howard brings to light the dramatic measures tenants have taken to create—and sustain and strengthen—communities that mattered to them.
More Than Shelter opens with the tumultuous institutional history of the San Francisco Housing Authority, from its inception during the New Deal era, through …

American Military Strategy In The Vietnam War, 1965– 1973, Gregory A. Daddis
American Military Strategy In The Vietnam War, 1965– 1973, Gregory A. Daddis
History Faculty Books and Book Chapters
For nearly a decade, American combat soldiers fought in South Vietnam to help sustain an independent, noncommunist nation in Southeast Asia. After U.S. troops departed in 1973, the collapse of South Vietnam in 1975 prompted a lasting search to explain the United States’ first lost war. Historians of the conflict and participants alike have since critiqued the ways in which civilian policymakers and uniformed leaders applied—some argued misapplied—military power that led to such an undesirable political outcome. While some claimed U.S. politicians failed to commit their nation’s full military might to a limited war, others contended that most officers fundamentally …
