Family And Marital Satisfaction And The Use Of Social Network Technologies, Iryna Sharaievska
Family And Marital Satisfaction And The Use Of Social Network Technologies, Iryna Sharaievska
Iryna Sharaievska
The popularity of social network sites (SNS) is increasing among all age groups. Since shared leisure is considered to be one of the key factors that contribute to the stability and quality of marriage and family and life satisfaction, the interplay between the use of SNS by family members, their leisure and their marital and family satisfaction should be examined. The objectives of this study were to: (1) Explore how the use of SNSs by family members influences and is influenced by family leisure and family satisfaction; (2) Examine how the use of SNSs by couples influences and is influenced …

Simo: Modeling And Measuring The Relationships Between Strategy, It/Mission Alignment Maturity And Nonprofit Organizational Outcomes, Kelly Ann Trusty
Kelly A Trusty Ph.D.
The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to adapt Croteau and Bergeron’s (2001) Information Technology Trilogy model and Luftman’s (2000) Strategic Alignment Maturity Model to the nonprofit sector and (2) to combine the adapted models with Miles and Snow’s (1978) strategy typology model and organizational performance measures based on McLaughlin and Jordan’s (2010) logic model to test a proposed model that examines the relationships between strategy typology, IT alignment maturity and organizational performance in nonprofit organizations. A cross-sectional survey design was implemented. One thousand, eight hundred and six organizations that had received grants from Indiana Community Foundations between 2009 …
Does America Face A Shortage Of Scientists And Engineers?, Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Does America Face A Shortage Of Scientists And Engineers?, Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] As someone who served on the committee that issued the 1998 study of the early careers of life scientists that Teitelbaum talks about in his article and who has critiqued models that projected shortages of new PhDs, I am very sympathetic to many of the points that he makes (National Research Council, 1998; Ehrenberg, 1991). What I want to focus on today is the word we in his title, because, as Teitelbaum emphasizes, the question of shortages or surpluses is often in the eye of the beholder. For example, from the perspective of faculty members involved in the academic …

Editorial: Social Implications Of Technology- “Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo”, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
Late last year, IEEE SSIT was invited to put together a paper for the centennial edition of Proceedings of the IEEE that was published in May 2012. The paper titled, “Social Implications of Technology: The Past, the Present, and the Future,” brought together five members of SSIT with varying backgrounds, and two intense months of collaboration and exchange of ideas. I personally felt privileged to be working with Karl D. Stephan, Emily Anesta, Laura Jacobs and M.G. Michael on this project.

Commentary On: Mann, Steve (2012): Wearable Computing, Katina Michael, M.G. Michael
Associate Professor Katina Michael
In Professor Steve Mann- inventor, physicist, engineer, mathematician, scientist, designer, developer, project director, filmmaker, artist, instrumentalist, author, photographer, actor, activist- we see so much of the paradigmatic classical Greek philosopher. I recall asking Steve if technology shaped society or society shaped technology. He replied along the lines that the question was superfluous. Steve instead pointed to praxis, from which all theory, lessons or skills stem, are practiced, embodied and realized. Steve has always been preoccupied by the application of his ideas into form. In this way too, he can be considered a modern day Leonardo Da Vinci.

Where The Cathedrals And Bazaars Are: An Index Of Open Source Software Activity And Potential, Douglas Noonan, Paul Baker, Art Seavey, Nathan Moon
Douglas S. Noonan
This article presents a framework to measure activity and potential for open source software development and use at a country level. The framework draws on interviews with experts in the open source software industry and numerous existing studies in the literature to identify relevant indicators. Several indices of diverse variable lists and weighting and aggregation methods were developed and tested for robustness. The results provide a first step toward more systematically understanding the current state of open source software internationally.

Price Signals And Consumers’ Energy Conservation Behavior: The Case Of Responsiveness In Residential Hvac Technologies From 1990-2003, Douglas S. Noonan, Brett M. Baden

Incentives to adopt energy efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are moderated by regulatory regimes governing utility prices. Homeowners with different HVAC systems can expect the quality of those HVACs systems – including energy efficiency – to be reflected in higher sale prices for their property. How these premiums vary with changes in energy prices is assessed for Chicago. Comparing HVAC price premiums for gas and electricity allows comparative policy analysis, since natural gas prices were deregulated in 1993 and electricity prices were regulated until 2007. The results show how (de)regulating energy prices affects incentives to adopt green …

This paper accepts the thesis that technology is not value-free. It then focuses on technology’s form as being institutional in nature and characteristic. On that basis, it argues that technology “absorbs the surrounding ethos and regurgitate pieces of the normative pattern back into the social kaleidoscope of choices, and by thus doing influence the thrust of liberty.” Hence, rather than the real danger lying in runaway technologies that deepen the process of surveillance and control, and thus curtail liberty, it resides, instead, in the possibility that technology’s role could be usurped to justify otherwise unjustifiable redefinitions of the rights of …

Technological Specialization And Economic Performance In Oecd Countries, Mario Pianta, Valentina Meliciani
Technological Specialization And Economic Performance In Oecd Countries, Mario Pianta, Valentina Meliciani
Mario Pianta
The paper investigates the growing sectoral specialization in technological activities of OECD countries (measured using patent data) and its impact on countries' innovative and economic performance in the 1975-1990 period. Aggregate indicators of sectoral specialization are introduced, showing the extent to which countries concentrate their innovations in few fields, or spread them across several sectors. A general positive relationship is found between the degree of specialization in technology and higher rates of growth, while specialization in electronics-related fields is not associated to better economic or technological performances. The position of individual countries in these patterns is also examined, showing that …
