This personal narrative documents Rachael Grasso’s lived experience in the outdoors, focusing on mental health and female leadership. Originally written for a graduate capstone presentation, the narrative visits landscapes that Rachael associates with life lessons and pivotal moments in her career and personal life. She hopes to incorporate these experiences into her future work as an educator and outdoor instructor.

The Influence Of Gender And Ethnic Diversity In Higher Education Leadership, Jordan A. Romager

This study aimed to investigate the impact of ethnic and gender diversity on the practice of leadership in higher education. Fourteen higher education leaders participated in hour-long semi-structured interviews about their leadership practice/philosophy, leadership influences, leadership history/experience, and leadership recommendations. Leaders reported practicing ethical styles of leadership and emphasizing collaboration and relationship-building in their leadership. Leaders reported that their childhood environment highly impacted them, especially socioeconomic status and access to education. Leaders experienced challenges around managing financial crises and unreasonable expectations while in their positions. Previous research indicated that there are 64 preferred leadership characteristics. These characteristics were derived from a review of the current literature on leadership, as well as focus groups and structured interviews. These characteristics can be grouped into 6 leadership styles: Imaginative, Constructive, Synergy, Principled, Virtuous, and Alpha Male. The current study aims to investigate how preference for these 6 leadership styles relates to political party affiliation.

Chin and Trimble (2014) describe the need for a new culturally resonant model of leadership. A new model should present a more diverse and globally based perspective. Sixty-four characteristics of leadership were derived from both the current literature on leadership and from structured interviews and focus groups obtained from Western and non-Western samples. The current research is part of an ongoing study regarding cultural differences in what are believed to be the necessary characteristics of outstanding leadership.
